Green also said that a 6th meeting of the Norwich DRI Local Planning Committee will be held on Tuesday, at 3:00 PM in the Community Room of Commerce Chenango at 15 South Broad Street in Norwich, to continue the Committee’s discussion and review of potential projects for inclusion in Norwich’s Strategic Investment Plan. This meeting is open to all members of the public, with time reserved at the end of the meeting for public comment. The meeting will also be available on ZOOM.

The Oneonta Fire Department responded to a truck fire on Grand Street Wednesday Afternoon. The engine was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived, the driver escaped without injury, there were no injuries among firefighters reported.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection announced today that they are not in a position to shutdown the Delaware Aqueduct this fall as originally planned. The schedule is now planned for October 1, 2023 through May 31, 2024, the new timeline will ensure that the DEP completes and tests new system configurations and that outside communities are also prepared for the shutdown.

The Oneonta Police Department is seeking public help in the murder on May 30th of 24 year old Kaleb O’Neill of Oneonta. O’Neill was found with stab wounds in the alley near 6 Dietz Street, he was declared dead after being transported to A.O. Fox Hospital. Sidney Village Officials announced that due to a water main repair, the village is shutting of water in the downtown area through 6:00 PM. The Main Street Bridge is closed for repairs, Chambers & O’Hara announced that their Main Street entrance is closed, but patrons can enter the lot from the driveway on Bridge Street about 200 yards from the Traffic Light.

32 year old Anthony Schorer of Burlington was sentenced to 10 years probation in Otsego County Court. Schorer pleaded guilty to a 2nd degree criminal sexual act against a child, State Police originally arrested Schorer on January 4th and his brother, 33 year old Timothy Schorer of Hartwick on January 11th, he is due in court on June 24th. The alleged crimes happened between 2003 and 2010, the victim was between the ages of 5 and 11 years old.

The State Department of Health today announced the 1st confirmed orthopoxvirus case outside of New York City, following testing at the Wadsworth Lab in Albany. The Sullivan County health department is treating the case as a probable monkeypox case, and contact tracing efforts are underway. Broome County Transit premiered their new fully electric buses that the county will be transitioning to in the coming months. The Busses are manufactured by Nova Bus of Plattsburgh, Broome County will be the only county in the state to transition to an all-electric public transit system.

New York State has started mailing out homeowner tax rebate checks earlier than originally anticipated, to almost 3 million eligible homeowners. About $2.2 billion in one-time property tax rebates for low and middle-income homeowners are being sent, New Yorkers that are eligible will automatically receive a check by early July, more information is available at tax.ny.gov.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 45-year-old Henry Stellato of Hamden, after Deputies were dispatched to a domestic dispute. Stellato is accused barricading himself inside & not allowing family members to leave the Hamden residence June 2nd, he was armed with a shotgun and made threats to law enforcement. Stellato put down the shotgun and exited the residence, he physically resisted being taken into custody, 1 Special Response Team member was cut by a razor blade Stellato had taped between his fingers. Stellato was charged with Menacing a Police Officer, Assault, 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon & 1 count of Obstructing Governmental Administration, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility without bail.

The SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association will host the annual Alumni Weekend This Friday through Sunday. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli announced a follow up to an audit of the Village of Delhi. Auditors issued a report in January 2020 identifying areas of improvement related to disbursements, including payroll. In a follow-up review, auditors found the village has made progress in implementing a corrective action, with 2 out of the 3 recommendations fully implemented and the 3rd partially implemented.

Governor Kathy Hochul issued a proclamation on Saturday, June 4 to schedule special elections to fill vacancies in the U.S. House of Representatives in the 19th & 23rd Districts. The special elections will be held Tuesday, August 23, on the same day as the New York Congressional Primaries. The 19th District was vacated when Antonio Delgado accepted the position of Lieutenant Governor, replacing Brian Benjamin who was arrested on federal corruption charges, the 23rd was vacated by the resignation of Tom Reed, who was accused of sexual harassment.

Broome County District Attorney’s office announced that 21 year old Brandon Carlson of Endwell pleaded guilty to vehicular assault, operating a motor vehicle while impaired causing injury, attempted criminal possession of stolen property, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle & driving while ability impaired by drugs. Carlson was arrested after he stole a pickup truck and led state police on a high-speed chase, Carlson struck another vehicle that resulted in serious physical injury to the other driver. Carlson was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of the crash. Carlson is expected to be sentenced to 2 1.3 to 7 years on prison when sentenced in September.

More than 80 people were displaced last weekend at a Norwich, after money from the Family Enrichment that paid for them to stay in a Super 8 motel, ran out. Many of the people have mental health issues, drug addictions or are registered sex offenders, The City of Norwich & Chenango County have a short-term housing plans for those displaced, a meeting of City officials was called over the weekend to finding other temporary options for those displaced.

The laws close Loopholes that were exposed by the Buffalo Supermarket shooting, bars the purchase of Semiautomatic Rifles by anyone Under 21 by Requiring a License, Prohibits the purchase of Body Armor with Exception of Those in Specified Professions, Requires Microstamping of New Semiautomatic Pistols; Eliminates Grandfathering of High-Capacity Feeding Devices; Requires Social Media Companies to Improve Response to and Reporting of Hateful Content .

State Assembly & Senate ended their 2022 sessions Saturday to take up remaining bills. Lawmakers passed the Green CHIPS bill, which would incentivize semiconductor manufacturers to build new factories in New York State and Alyssa’s law, which would require school district safety teams to consider the installation of a panic alarm system to silently alert law enforcement in the event of a life threatening or emergency situation. Alyssa’s Law now heads to the governor’s desk.

Binghamton Police are investigating the report of a body found in a creek by a passerby Thursday Morning near Bayless Avenue. 64 year old Debra Scott of Johnson City was found in the creek by the town & city Binghamton lines, An autopsy was conducted and the cause of death has not yet been determined.

State Police are reminding motorists to follow New York’s “Move Over Law” Following an accident on I-81 Sunday. Police said that a Trooper had pulled over to the side of the highway to remove debris in the road, when the patrol car was hit from behind. There were no injuries, the Patrol vehicle was destroyed.

State Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett announced that the adult cigarette smoking rate in New York State achieved a new low of 12% in 2020, lower than the U.S. average of 15.5 percent. Among young adults, ages 18 to 24, the smoking rate is even lower, at 5.5%.

Starting Monday, June 6,, NYSDOT will be conducting single lane closures on State Route 28 between Lewis Rd and Turnpike Rd in the Town of Meredith to facilitate a shoulder-widening safety project. Alternating one-way traffic will be controlled by temporary traffic signals 24/7 through mid-August. At that time, the alternating closure zone will move south on NY-28 and is scheduled to last through Mid-October. The scope of this next closure is yet to be determined. A new Travel Advisory will be issued as the time approaches.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 37-year-old Douglas Ostrander of Roseboom for 1st degree Rape, Predatory sexual assault against a child, course of sexual conduct, criminal sex act & Endangering the welfare of a child, the alleged sexual abuse happened in the towns of Milford, Cherry Valley and Roseboom. Ostrander was remanded to the Otsego County jail on $25,000 cash bail or $250,000 bond.

State Police updated information on Wednesday’s head-on collision involving an SUV and a Trailways bus on State Highway 23 in the town of Davenport. The only occupant of the SUV, was 65-year-old Diane Bevins of Stamford, she was pronounced deceased on the scene. The driver of the bus, 44-year-old Joanna Reedman of Astoria, and a passenger, 59-year-old Aris Vavasis of Hartwick were transported to Bassett Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, 3 other passengers were not injured, the investigation is on-going.

New York’s legislature passed legislation banning anyone under age 21 from buying or possessing a semi-automatic rifle. New York already requires people to be 21 to possess a handgun. Younger people would still be allowed to have other types of rifles and shotguns. The bill would also require anyone buying a semiautomatic rifle to get a license, the legislation heads to Governor Hochul’s desk for approval.

State Police announced that 1 person was arrested during an Underage Drinking Initiative in Chenango and Otsego Counties. The initiative took place on May 28th & Alcohol was sold to a minor at Smithville General Store in Smithville Flats. An appearance ticket was issued to the clerk who sold alcohol to the minor. Development Chenango Corporation announced the next phase of the ‘Hotel Norwich’ initiative. Last year, Development Chenango purchased 14 to 16 South Broad Street, Norwich, for the purpose of developing a boutique hotel. Development Chenango sent out a formal “Request for Qualifications” to identify a developer and operator, the DCC Board of Directors awarded the project to Mike and Dan O’Reilly, owners of Principle Design Engineering, they have 1 year to secure the funding necessary to get the project started.

18-year-old Payton Gendron of Conklin was charged Wednesday by an Erie County Grand Jury with domestic terrorism motivated by hate and 10 counts of 1st-degree murder. Gendron has been in custody since the May 14th shooting at a Buffalo TOPS Supermarket, the 25-count indictment also contains charges of murder and attempted murder as a hate crime and weapons possession.

A law introduced after the murder of Utica teen Bianca Devins has passed in the State Senate and Assembly. Bianca’s Law would create criminal and civil penalties for disseminating personal images of crime victims. In 2019, Bianca Devins was murdered by Brandon Clark in Utica, he posted photos of her body on social media, which were spread on various platforms and sent directly to members of her family. The law is headed to Governor Hochul’s desk for approval..

Governor Hochul & Legislative Leaders announced that 10 bills have been introduced to tighten New York’s gun laws, close loopholes and directly address the gaps in our laws exposed by the shootings in Buffalo, Texas, and around the country. The bills would require information sharing between state, local and federal agencies when guns are used in crimes; make threatening mass harm a crime; require micro-stamping for new guns; prohibit the purchase of body armor for anyone not in an eligible profession & strengthen the Red Flag law by expanding the list of people who can file for Extreme Risk Protection Orders.

The State Department of Taxation & Finance announced that excise tax, prepaid sales tax, and state sales and use taxes are suspended, Local sales and use taxes are not suspended except where local legislative bodies voted to suspend their tax also. Several jurisdictions have elected to change their sales tax rate effective, today, the list of counties & municipalities that have dropped their portion of the gas tax can be found at tax.ny.gov.

Oneonta Police are investigating the murder of a 24-year-old Kaleb O’Neill of Oneonta Monday. Oneonta Police Department received a 911 call of a male being stabbed in the alleyway of 6 Dietz Street, O’Neill had multiple stab wounds, 1st responders administered aid, he was transported to A.O. Fox Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. State Police Forensic Identification Unit and canine unit were called to the scene and an attempt to locate the suspects was undertaken but revealed no other information. The case remains under investigation by the Oneonta Police Department & State Police BCI & Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Oneonta Police Detective Division at (607) 432-1111.

State Police responded to a report of a motorcycle that crashed on I-81 Friday. A trooper located a Harley Davidson that had crashed into a guide-rail in the town of Marathon. The operator, 44 year old Daniel McPhillips of Throop, Pennsylvania was later located deceased, The investigation is on-going.

State Police arrested 21 year old Joseph Hayes of Middletown and 26 year old Cory Bartley of Fleischmanns for breaking a window at a synagogue in Fleischmanns, May 20th. Hayes and Bartley entered synagogue property, and Hayes threw a large rock at the building, breaking a window. Bartley also threw a rock at the building, which did not cause any damage. Hayes is charged with criminal mischief, criminal trespass, Bartley is charged with criminal mischief, Troopers issued both men appearance tickets returnable to Middletown town court on June 23.

Fire fighters in Oneonta responded to a fire at 36 High Street Saturday. The Fire caused extensive damage to the rear of the building, all occupants safely evacuated, the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters from Unadilla & Wells Bridge responded to a fire at 184 Merriman Hill Road Sunday. The fire was confined to a garage, no injuries were reported & the investigation is continuing.
