The CDC reports that COVID-19 sub-variants continuing to spread, with all but 1 county in New York State designated as medium or high-risk. The State Health Department recommends that people wear masks in indoor public spaces, regardless of vaccination status. 45 counties in New York are now designated as high-risk, up from 36 counties just a week ago, another 16 counties have been designated as medium-risk and only The Bronx remains at low-risk levels. The majority of the Northeast states are deemed medium or high-risk for COVID spread of the latest sub variants.

Broome County District Attorney Michael Korchak announced that the State Supreme Appellate Division Third Department upheld the conviction of Michael Gincerowksi Jr. for vehicular manslaughter & DWI. Gincerowksi was convicted 3 years ago for the striking and killing 16-year-old Constance Mazzarese while she was riding her bicycle along State Route 369 in the Town of Fenton, the court ruled that the original conviction & sentence in Broome County Court was the proper verdict & Punishment.

Another lawsuit is being filed to throw out the new redistricting maps that set the boundaries of State Assembly districts. The lawsuit has been filed by a bipartisan group of political activists that contends that the maps drawn by the legislature, it asks for a judge to throw out the Assembly Maps and move all of New York’s primary elections to the same day. Currently, the Assembly & Gubernatorial Primaries are scheduled for June, while the State Senate & Congressional primaries have been moved to August.

18 year old Payton Gendron of Conklin has been charged with 1st degree murder, for the mass shooting Saturday at a Buffalo Tops Supermarket, 10 people were killed, 3 injured, Buffalo Police believe that Gendron drove to Buffalo specifically to shoot & kill black people in the supermarket in a predominantly Black neighborhood, Gendron allegedly posted a white supremacist manifesto online, he had previously received a mental health evaluation after making threats of violence in 2021 at Susquehanna Valley High School. Gendron is being held without bail pending court action on Thursday, more charges are expected as the investigation continues, the FBI is investigating.

State Police at Deposit arrested 21 year old Marcos Parker of Binghamton for Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument, after a trooper initiated a traffic stop on State Route 17E in the town of Deposit after observing a vehicle speeding. The trooper observed that the letters on the license plate were not raised, like they’re supposed to be. An investigation revealed that Parker had a fake license plate made, he was arrested and his vehicle was towed, he is scheduled to appear in the Deposit Town Court on June 13th.

State Police have arrested a woman who allegedly stabbed a man inside Stewart’s in Sherburne last night. State Police said that an Investigator walked into the Stewart’s when he saw a man and a woman physically fighting. He attempted to separate the two when the woman stabbed the man. The Investigator restrained the woman and store employees called 911. The victim, identified as 56 year old Daniel Purdy of Sherburne was transported to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse with serious but non-life threatening injuries. 25 year old Jessica Collins of Sherburne was charged with 1st Degree Assault, She was processed and transported to Chenango County Jail. State Police were assisted on scene by Chenango County Deputies, the investigation is continuing.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a 1 car property damage automobile accident on County Highway 14 in the Town of Franklin on May 5th. Deputies determined that the vehicle crossed over the dividing lines, entered into the oncoming lane of travel, struck guardrails, causing it to become disabled. 53-year-old Dorian Stewart of Unadilla was operating the vehicle with a suspended license and in an intoxicated state, she was charged with failure to keep right, aggravated unlicensed operation and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs. Stewart was released on tickets returnable to the Town of Franklin Court at a later date

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31 year old Steven Barrows of Sidney on burglary & Grand Larceny charges, after stopping a suspected stolen vehicle from the Town of Otego. Barrows was located driving the vehicle in the Town of Oneonta, he was taken into custody at the Super 8 Motel by Deputies and State Troopers, Barrows was arraigned and was remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility. The investigation is on-going and additional charges are expected.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 29-year-old Andrew Kreger of Oneonta, after Deputies responded to a shoplifting complaint at the Hannaford Grocery Store in Oneonta. Kreger is accused of leaving the store with $848.35 worth of merchandise without paying, he was also found to be in possession of a small quantity of LSD. Kreger was charged with petit larceny and criminal possession of a controlled substance, he was processed and released on an appearance ticket pending future court action.

Former Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin will have his court date next January, he is accused of using his political clout to get campaign contributions. Benjamin resigned as lieutenant governor after pleading not guilty on the day of his arrest, he has been replaced by local Congressman Antonio Delgado.

State Police arrested 27 year old Amanda-Lynn Pedlar of Cooperstown, for Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument, after Troopers were dispatched to the Oneonta Walmart after employees reported that Pedlar attempted to use a counterfeit $100 bill mixed in with actual currency. Pedlar was located at the Town House Inn and arrested, she was processed and issued an appearance ticket to the Oneonta Town Court on May 17th.

The Norwich Downtown Revitalization Initiative Local Planning Committee will be holding a meeting today from 3:30-5:30 PM in the Norwich High School Cafeteria, they will be reviewing proposed DRI projects to be potentially included in Norwich’s Strategic Investment Plan. The meeting is open to the public, with time reserved at the end for public comment. A public workshop will also be held at 6:30 PM in the Norwich High School Cafeteria, where the public is invited to learn about the proposed projects being considered for DRI funding and to participate in a session to provide feedback.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested of 31 year old Lisa Rosengrant of Hancock for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle. On May 3rd on State Highway 10 in the Town of Tompkins, Deputies observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, a traffic stop was conducted and it was learned that Rosengrant’s operating privileges were suspended. Rosengrant was also issued Tickets for Operating without a license and Speeding, she was released and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Tompkins Court at a later date.

On May 4th, Delaware County Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to a reported domestic dispute, they arrested 57-year-old Brett Shepler of Harpersfield, for allegedly obstructing the breathing of the victim and damaging property. Deputies arrested and charged Shepler Friday with Unlawful Imprisonment, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, Reckless Endangerment and Criminal Mischief, he was arraigned in the Town of Harpersfield Court and released on his own recognizance & he was ordered to return at a later date.

Schenevus fire department responded to a reported brush fire shortly after 11:30 Wednesday Morning, near the intersection of State Highway 7 & Stone House Road in the Town of Maryland. Dry conditions, wind and steep terrain were contributing factors while firefighters from 18 different departments fought the blaze. An additional 8 departments were on standby. The Fire was under control at approximately 5:00 PM. Otsego County EMS reminds area residents that the statewide burn ban through May 14.

The Binghamton Police Department announced the arrested of 28 year old Justin Williams of Greenville North Carolina in connection with a fatal shooting at 58 Floral Avenue Tuesday morning. Williams was charged with 2nd degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon for the shooting death of 31-year-old Victor Texidor of Binghamton. Williams was stopped by a Pennsylvania State Trooper who spotted Williams Vehicle on Interstate 81 near Gibson. Williams was arraigned in Binghamton City Court and remanded to the Broome County Jail. The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 46 year old Gweyn Brockway of Davenport on charges of Forgery and Grand Larceny in the Town of Sidney. Brockway was working as a Home Health Care nurse, she was accused of stealing, forging and depositing checks owned by a patient and her family, totaling over $17,000. Brockway and charged her with 21 counts of Forgery and 1 Count of Grand Larceny, she was issued appearance tickets for Town of Sidney Court at a later date.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced that she will vote in favor to codify the Roe Vs. Wade Supreme Court decision, when it comes up for a vote today:

Those planning on attending the Mass Food Distribution are asked to not arrive before the 11:00 AM start time, in order to avoid traffic issues & large crowds.

New Yorkers will have to wait until August to vote in the primary elections for Congressional Seats and State Senate Seats, following a a ruling by U.S. District Judge Gary Sharpe of Albany on Tuesday. The Primaries for governor and the state Assembly are still scheduled for June. A state judge and an independent expert are now drawing up new maps, which were ordered after a judge ruled that Democrats gerrymandered the maps to get more representation & ordered new maps be drawn.

Antonio Delgado announced today that the Delgado for New York campaign committee is officially open, with a new campaign website, delgadoforny.com. Delgado will be on the ticket with Governor Hochul in the June 28th primary and the November 8th general election. The Great New York State Fair will ban outdoor smoking except in designated areas starting this summer. Smoking is already prohibited inside buildings on the fairgrounds and at the Chevy Court and Chevy Park venues. State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Computer Crimes Unit arrested a 17-year-old for Promoting a Sexual Performance by a Child and Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child. An investigation revealed that the unidentified 17-year-old from Otego was in possession and was promoting images consistent with child sexual exploitation. The arrest stems from a cyber tip received by the New York State Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Investigators located 233 videos and 68 images depicting child pornography. The teen was issued appearance tickets to the Otsego County Court on Wednesday.

Construction of a new SUNY Oneonta sign on the corner of Ravine Parkway and West Street will soon be underway. The groundbreaking for this project is scheduled for Monday, May 23 and we anticipate that the project will take approximately five months to complete. 6 Otsego County School in 4 Districts participated in the Otsego County Film Plastic Recycling Challenge, with Gilbertsville-Mount Upton winning by collecting about half of all film plastic collected. Jeff O’Handley of the Otsego County Conservation Association explains:

O’Handley said that the event is co-sponsored by the Association and the County Solid Waste Department. During the challenge, schools collect as much film plastic as they can, it’s collected, weighed, and then dropped off for recycling, where it can be turned into new material such as composite lumber. Last Thursday Braedon Baker of Norwich asked permission to bring his tractor to Norwich High School Friday, as he had some errands to run with it after school, he was told he could not. Braedon’s Father Rob Baker told him that it was not illegal, and to take it anyway and Friday the tractor was impounded by Norwich City Police & taken to the City Lot. Rob Baker paid the $325 towing fee and they went home, You Tuber “Whistlin’s Diesel” heard the story & offered to pay Norwich School District residents to drive their tractors to school today & he would pay them, according to Rob Baker:

The CDC is warning residents in most upstate counties to wear masks due to high case-counts of COVID-19. 36 counties are now classified as having “high” community levels of the coronavirus, making up almost half of the entire nationwide total. “High Transmission” counties have confirmed cases of the new BA.2.12 sub-variant, according to the state Health Department officials. Governor Hochul’s office reported Thursday that Central New York, the Finger Lakes, Mohawk Valley and Southern Tier were on a downward trend in case counts, and hospitalizations.

The State DMV is warning residents about an increase in catalytic converter thefts across the state. The DMV will now issue serial numbers to dealers to etch into each catalytic converter, which use platinum, palladium, and other precious metals is the reason criminals are stealing them, The catalytic converters have a street value of between $200 and $300.

State Police have identified 20-year-old Tyler Graham of Burlington Flats as the driver of a car in a fiery crash in Edmeston Thursday night. The initial investigation revealed that Graham was traveling at an unsafe speed on County Highway 20 when he struck a fence and tree & his vehicle caught fire. Police were able to remove Graham from the car, he was transported by helicopter to Upstate Medical Center, The crash remains under investigation.

The City of Oneonta Police Department arrested 36-year-old Melissa Scott of Oneonta for 1st degree Assault and criminal possession of a weapon, after Scott and a 34-year-old male victim engaged in a domestic dispute at 7 Fonda Avenue in Oneonta. Scott allegedly stabbed the male victim causing a serious injury and uncontrolled bleeding, he was transported to Fox Hospital, was stabilized & was transported to Albany Medical Center. Scott was held at the City of Oneonta Jail Anyone with information is asked to contact the Oneonta Police Department Detectives Division at (607)432-1111.

Governor Kathy Hochul has tested positive for COVID-19. Governor Hochul stated that she has been both vaccinated and boosted, along with not showing any symptoms. Hochul will be continuing her isolation throughout the week and work remotely until she is cleared.

Norwich City Police arrested 42 year old Todd Jackson of Norwich for allegedly setting a dumpster on fire at a Norwich senior living facility in the early morning hours on Saturday, April 30th. The fire damaged the dumpster & surrounding fences, The Norwich Fire department quickly extinguished the fire and no injuries were reported. Jackson was arrested Thursday for 2nd & 3rd degree criminal mischief and 5th degree arson, he was arraigned in Norwich City Court and held on $10,000 bail.

A.M. NEWS Friday 5-6-22

27 year old Vincent Cavalieri was sentenced to a one-year conditional discharge in Oneida County Court for injuring 2 people in a Camden Restaurant when he accidentally discharged his firearm. Cavalieri pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment, in additional to the conditional discharge, he will be resigning from the Cooperstown Police Department, he will have his pistol license suspended for a year.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 45 year old Chad Jackson of Binghamton, was found guilty of 2nd degree burglary, On March 28, 2020, Jackson broke into a room at the Del Motel on Upper Court Street in Kirkwood and stole items from a person inside. He is facing up to 15 years in prison and faces sentencing August 8th.

Oneonta Police Department announced that a resident was contacted by a person claiming to be a Federal Agent, investigating a drug trafficking crime and that the City of Oneonta Police Chief, Christopher Witzenburg, would be calling to verify this investigation, then a person claiming to be the Chief Whitzenburgh contacted the resident, who stated that she knows what the Chief sounds like on the phone at which time the caller terminated the call. Chief Witzenburg contacted Homeland Security with the number the call came from, it was confirmed to be a scam call. Oneonta Police Department urges are residents to report scam calls to them or your local authorities & never give personal information to scam callers.

During a routine property check the Sidney Police Department located an open door in the back of the former Grand Union building behind McDonald’s on Wednesday. Officers called for assistance and During the building search, 2 individuals were found inside the building illegally. 37 year old Peter Puglisi of Sidney and 39 year old Thomas Dugon of Afton were charged with 3rd degree Burglary, Possession of burglar tools & Attempted Petty larceny. Both men were arraigned in Village of Sidney Court & were released on their own recognizance to appear back in court at a later date.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is once again pushing to fully fund the USDA Rural Broadband Program for Fiscal Year 2023 at $350 million:

Gillibrand said that about 17% of rural residents nationwide still do not have reliable broadband, which left many rural students behind when remote learning became a necessity during the pandemic.

Village of Sidney Police Department with the assistance of the Hancock Police Department, Arrested 31 year old Jon Speller of Hancock on an active arrest warrant issued by the Village of Sidney Court. The arrest stems from an investigation into a complaint of a Family Court order of protection being violated over 20 times in a two week period. Speller was arrested and charged with the 21 counts of Criminal contempt, he was arraigned in Village of Sidney Court where he was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $750 bail.

Broome County DA Mike Korchak announced that 30 year old Austin Whitney of Binghamton was sentenced to 25 years to life in State Prison, for the 2nd degree murder of Anthony Cebula. Whitney admitted to killing Cebula by striking him in the head repeatedly with a hammer in Binghamton in January of 2021.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office reported an inmate death at the Otsego County Jail Sunday afternoon, after correction officers found a unresponsive inmate in his cell during rounds. The inmate was pronounced dead at Bassett Medical Center, The State Commission of Corrections and the Attorney General’s Office are reviewing the case.
