President Trump is working to dismantle the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau which is a federal agency that prevents Americans from getting scammed by big banks and corporations and responds to millions of consumer complaints each year. Trump has attempted to fire nearly 90% of the agency’s staff, including all but one employee of the Office of Financial Protection of Older Americans. Senator Gillibrand said that there other avenues that seniors can use if they are scammed, but it might not be sufficient if the President’s cuts are implemented:

Senator Gillibrand said that Older Americans are disproportionately the targets of scams and fraud; in 2023 alone, Americans over age 60 lost $3.4 billion to scams.

Local government sales tax collections totaled $5.8 billion in the first quarter of 2025, an increase of 3.2% compared to the same quarter last year, according to a report released by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Chenango County saw the highest quarterly growth at 11.8%, followed by Delaware County at 10.4%, & Broome County was 4th at 9.8%. 14 of 18 of the cities outside of New York City that impose their own sales tax experienced year-over-year growth in the first quarter. Norwich had the largest increase at 14.5%.

Broome County Sheriff’s Strategic Response Group located 42 year old Christopher Knapp of Binghamton, in Binghamton this week. Knapp was wanted on 4 separate warrants, on charges of Burglary, a Probation Violation, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Failure to Appear. Knapp was observed working on a motorcycle, Upon seeing law enforcement, Knapp ran inside and attempted to escape, struggling briefly with deputies before being successfully taken into custody, he was additionally charged with Obstruction of Governmental Administration, he was processed before being transferred to Johnson City Police to answer for his warrant in that municipality.

5 more corrections officers appeared in Oneida County Court on Wednesday to discuss plea offers related to the beating death of inmate Robert Brooks, at Marcy Correctional Facility in December, none of the 5 reached a decision regarding their offers. The delay was due to all officer’s attorneys receiving new discovery information from the prosecution, necessitating more time for their clients to consider options. Nicholas Anzalone and Christopher Walrath, both charged with murder, are scheduled to return to court on May 14 and 19. David Walters, Michael Mashaw, and Michael Fisher, charged with manslaughter, will also be back in court on May 14.
