22-year-old Julian Talamantez was sentenced Friday in Broome county court to 40 years in prison for 1st degree murder and 1st degree attempted murder, in connection with the attack on 22-year-old Jordan Dordell and his 19-year-old pregnant girlfriend in Binghamton. Talamantez and 25-year-old Nigel Saunders are accused of breaking into the Dordell home & beating, stabbing & setting fire to the victims, Dordell was killed and his fiancée was injured. Saunders faces trial on the same charges shortly.

Firefighters from several department responded to a house fire in the attic at 7 Cherry Street near West Street in Oneonta this morning. The fire was confined to the attic by firefighters, 2 firefighters suffered minor injuries & were taken to Fox Hospital for treatment. Fire Fighters from Oneonta as well as Franklin, Worcester, Sidney and Otego responded to the fire that was reported at around 6:30 this morning by a neighbor. The building was empty and was reportedly unoccupied, police are investigating; the cause of the fire has not yet been determined

Broome County sheriff’s department arrested 31-year-old Christopher Wolfson of Binghamton & 23 year old Sierra Barnett of Binghamton on drug charges following a traffic stop in the town of Chenango where Heroin was discovered in the vehicle. Wolfson was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, Barnett was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, both were remanded to the Broome County Correctional Facility without bail pending future court proceedings.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division arrested 48-year-old James Kelsey of Lincklaen for Criminal Possession of Marihuana & Unlawfully Growing Cannabis. Narcotics Detectives responded Friday to the report of marihuana growing in plain view. The investigation also revealed additional marihuana plants on Kelsey’s property as well as 1 pound of processed marihuana in the residence. Kelsey is scheduled to appear in the Town of Lincklaen Court at a later date.

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance reminded New Yorkers who requested a filing extension, that the October 15th is the deadline to file their State income tax return. So far, 54% have yet to file with only 2 days to the deadline. Department officials are urging late filers to e-file in order to make it before the deadline, to avoid fines and additional fees, or to get refunds twice as fast.
