Long Time Sidney community leader Roma “Ronnie” Haag died Monday at the age 87. Calling hours will be held today from 2:00 to 4:00pm and 6:00 to 8:00pm at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel at 21 Main Street in Sidney, A memorial service will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, at St. Luke’s Church at 139 W. Main Street in Sidney, followed by a luncheon. Memorial Donations may be directed to the Tri-Town Youth Club, at 12 Liberty Street Sidney, Haag was a driving force in establishing the clubs presence at its current location, among many other community projects over the years, including the skateboard park in Keith Clark Park.

Organizers for the 34th Annual Spiedie Fest & Balloon Rally announced that due to the continued heavy rain, Otsiningo Park is closed today & all of today’s scheduled events have been cancelled, with the exception of the KC & The Sunshine Band concert, which has been moved to the Floyd L. The 2nd annual New York State Craft Beer Competition featured 642 New York State-brewed beers. For the second straight year, Brooklyn-based Threes Brewing took home top honors, winning the Governor’s Excelsior Cup. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 69 year old Alan Tiffany of Walton on a criminal summons issued by The Town of Sidney Court for Harassment. The arrest followed an investigation into a report of a disturbance at a Rest Area on I-88 in the Town of Sidney on July 18th, where Tiffany is alleged to have subjected another person to unwanted physical contact. Tiffany is scheduled to appear at Town of Sidney Court at a later date to answer the charges.

29 year old Mark Briley was arrested by the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office for failing to mail his identification form within 10 days to the state Sex Offender Registry and leaving the state. Briley is on parole in New York, he was located in New Jersey and extradited back to New York, he was issued an appearance ticket for the Town of Oneonta Court for August 14th. Briley was charged with aggravated sexual abuse of a fellow inmate at Otsego County Jail in 2006, he is a level 2 sex offender & he is required to register for life.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 27 year old James Cormier on a charge of Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, uninspected motor vehicle and unlicensed driver, following a traffic stop on Meredith Street in the Village of Delhi. Cormier was released on tickets and is scheduled to return to the Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

Governor Cuomo today appointed a workgroup to draft legislation for a regulated adult-use marijuana program for the legislature to consider in the upcoming session based on the findings of a multi-agency study he commissioned in January. The study, led by the Department of Health, concluded that the positive impacts of a regulated marijuana market in New York State outweigh the potential negative impacts, and that areas that may be a cause for concern can be mitigated with regulation and proper use of public education that is tailored to address key populations. The workgroup will be overseen by Counsel to the Governor Alphonso David; it will consist of experts in public health, public safety and economics, and the leaders of relevant state agencies.

Delaware County Sheriff Deputies arrested 49 year old David Aunchman of Delhi for Aggravated Harassment and Criminal Contempt, for allegedly calling a protected party and violating an Order of Protection issued by the Delaware County Family Court. Aunchman was arraigned in the Town of Delhi Court where he was released on recognizance and directed to reappear in that court on a later date to answer the charges.

Local sales tax collections across New York grew 6% in the first 6 months of 2018, according to a report released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Tax collections totaled $8.5 billion compared to $8 billion during the same period last year. The report revealed that the highest regional increases in the state were in the Southern Tier, the Mohawk Valley& the Mid-Hudson all at 5.8%, The Capital District had 5.6% growth & Long Island at 5.5%.

Governor Cuomo today announced that the New York State Grown & Certified program has made $250,000 available to eligible, existing and new Grown & Certified food and beverage producers and processors; an additional $225,000 in funding is available for retailers to develop a long term, in-store consumer marketing campaign that promotes Grown & Certified products. The New Jersey Devils have named Mark Dennehy as the Head Coach of the Binghamton Devils today. Dennehy had accepted a position in Wheeling earlier this summer as Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations, after being relieved of his duties at Merrimack College, where he had coached for 13 years where he won 161 games & was credited with turning the hockey program around. Norwich City Police are reminding area residents to lock up their vehicles, following a series of vehicle break-ins. Police reported that 15 vehicles have been broken into in the last 3 days alone. Police also suggest bringing valuables inside, and not leaving them in plain view in the vehicle.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office was alerted of an alleged abduction last night at about 9:30 PM in Smithville Flats. This morning, the victim, 20 year old Katelyn Nielsen of Smithville Flats, the suspect 46 year old Calvin Burlingame of Newark Valley & his vehicle were all located in Broome County. Deputies reported that Nielsen was unharmed, the investigation is continuing, anyone with information can call 337-1863.

State Police have made an additional arrest in regards to the missing juvenile; Amanda Putorti of Richmondville. 37 year old Nicole Briggs of Preston Hollow was charged with Obstructing Governmental Administration and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Briggs was arrested along with John Winnie and Jeremy Schaefer in relation to this case; State Police were assisted by several area law enforcement agencies. Briggs, Schaefer & Winnie were released on appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Rensselaerville Court at a later date. The investigation is still ongoing.

The City of Oneonta Airport Commission will hold 3 special meetings over the next 2 weeks in the Common Council Chambers at City Hall. The only item on the agenda for each of these meetings is the interview of representatives of firms who had responded to the City’s request for proposals for provision of airport-consultant services for the next 5 years. Attorney General Barbara Underwood is part of a coalition of Attorneys General – announced that she will file suit against the Trump administration to block the distribution of materials that enable the printing of untraceable, undetectable guns using 3-D printers. Food stamp recipients will be able to use their benefits at farmers’ markets across New York State under an agreement the state and the Farmers Market Federation have made with a mobile application vendor. Governor Cuomo wrote to federal officials earlier this month urging them to renew a policy that allowed food stamp recipients to use their benefits at local farmers’ markets, after the federal government notified the state that food stamp benefits could no longer be used at farmers’ markets because of a technology change.

The Village of Cooperstown has been awarded a grant of up to $3 million to renovate 98 year old Doubleday Field in Cooperstown. Improvements to Doubleday Field will include replacing bleachers, improving pedestrian and disability access, repairing the field, and adding green space. The total cost is approximately $5.8 million. The stadium is owned and operated by the Village of Cooperstown, and it hosts more than 300 baseball games per year.

The State Public Service Commission revoked its approval of the 2016 merger agreement between Charter Communications and Time Warner Cable, because Charter, doing business as Spectrum, has made it clear that it has no intention of providing the public benefits upon which the Commission’s earlier approval was conditioned. In addition, the Commission attorneys is filing an enforcement action today in State Supreme Court to seek additional penalties for Charter’s past failures and ongoing non-compliance. Charter/Spectrum failed to meet deadlines & attempted to skirt obligations to serve rural communities, they have been ordered to file within 60 days a plan with the Commission to ensure an orderly transition to a successor provider.

Governor Cuomo today announced the nation’s first strategy to eliminate hepatitis C, including the establishment of a Task Force that will advise the state as it implements its plan. The elimination effort aims to stop the spread of the virus by increasing access to medications that can cure hepatitis C and expanding programs to connect New Yorkers with prevention, screening and treatment services. Hepatitis C is a liver disease affecting more than 200,000 New Yorkers, deaths have exceeded HIV-related deaths, with injecting drug use as the most common risk factor, the opioid epidemic has fueled a rise in new hepatitis C cases.

State Police arrested 38 year old Alycia Martin of Sidney for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. Troopers on patrol spotted Martin driving on State Highway 7 without any headlights, after a traffic stop, Troopers determined that she was impaired & that her license was suspended. Martin was subsequently arrested and arraigned in the town of Bainbridge Court where she was released on her own recognizance. She is scheduled to reappear in court on August 28th.

State Police arrested 37 year old Matthew Millard of Endicott for DWI with a reported B.A.C .22%. A trooper on patrol responded to a 911 complaint of a tractor trailer driving erratically on I-88, the trooper observed the tractor trailer travel into the shoulder several times. Millard was arrested for DWI & was released on appearance tickets returnable to the town of Oneonta Court on August 7th.

Wegner said that E-cigarettes contain nicotine, carcinogens and toxins and are not approved by the FDA as cessation devices, Health advicates believe that e-cigarettes may contribute various health issues later in life, and may serve as a getway to cigarettes. A recent Poll shows that New Yorkers overwhelmingly support a policy that would restrict e-cigarette advertising to youth under the age of 18 and over half support a ban on candy like flavors in e-cigarettes.

Justin Crandall was sentenced Wednesday in a Binghamton federal courtroom to 50 years in prison with post-release supervision for life, after he pleaded guilty to sexually exploited a 17-month-old child between December 2016 and February 2017 in Sidney. His wife Jessica Crandall was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years in prison with post-release supervision for life. Both pleaded guilty in October 2017.

Emergency crews from Brisben & Greene responded to a 2-vehicle crash involving a small camper Wednesday afternoon. Crews responded at about 12:40 PM to State Route 12 near Brisben. Debris from the camper was strewn along Route 12, no injuries were reported.

Patch said that the tests showed that April is already months into her 15 month pregnancy and expecting her fifth calf in early Spring 2019. Last year, more than a million
viewers worldwide watched April give birth to Tajiri on April 15th; the current pregnancy journey will again be available on social media.

The eastbound lanes of I-88 were closed earlier today between exits 17 and 18 in Otsego County, due to a multiple tractor trailer accident. State Police reported that 2
tractor trailers and a pickup truck pulling an empty livestock trailer crashed, the 1st tractor trailer was traveling eastbound in the left lane of I-88 when it hit the guide
wires, got caught up and then ended up in the right lane, the 2nd tractor trailer also got caught up in the guide wires that were stretched across the road, State Police
reported that the 2nd driver possibly tried to back up when the pickup truck rear-ended the 2nd tractor trailer. The pickup truck then got stuck under the back of the 2nd
tractor trailer, and the driver had to be extricated from the truck, suffering only minor injuries. the investigation is continuing.

The State DOT officials held a press conference at the Southern Tier Welcome Center in Broome County this morning to highlight the importance of driving safely in
construction work zones. 21 crashes caused by distracted driving in work zones have already been reported across the State during the current construction season,
there has also been an alarming increase in altercations initiated by motorists against DOT staff, Region 9 DOT Spokesman Dave Hamburg comments:

The City of Oneonta announced that they will provide a presentation on the status of the Downtown Revitalization expenditures, as part of a special Common Council
meeting on Monday at City hall. The special meeting will begin at 6:00 PM in the 2nd floor Common Council Chambers, with the presentation at 7:00 PM.

Delaware County Department of Solid Waste announced that there is plenty of composted materials available for county residents for their gardens, Solid Waste

McIntyre said that arrangements to obtain compost can be made at 865-5805 extension 201, she also announced that the Delaware County Clean Sweep days will be held
on October 19th & 20th this year, registration for that event will begin in September.

A federal Judge is expected to sentence 30 year old Justin Crandall and his wife Jessica of Sidney today in Binghamton’s federal court for their guilty pleas for the sexual abuse of a 17-month-old girl in their Sidney home. The couple could each face up to 90 years in prison at sentencing today.

State Highway 12 north in Oxford, over Fly Meadows Creek, will close this morning through August 8th for bridge deck replacement. The bridge is located north of the Village of Oxford between County Road 4 and Turner Street, Traffic will be required to detour using County Road 32 (East River Road) between State Highway 220/County Road 35 and County Road 32B (Halfway House Road Bridge) for the extent of the closure.

State Police arrested 26 year old Luis Tirado Jr. of Staten Island, for Operating a Motor Vehicle While Impaired by Drugs and unlawful possession of Marihuana. Troopers were on a stationary checkpoint in the village of Deposit, when Tirado was stopped, He was arrested & was issued appearance tickets to the village of Deposit Court returnable on August 14th.
