The Sidney Civic Center was officially sold to 2+4 Management earlier this month; they plan to turn the 2nd & 3rd floors into Senior Apartments. Sidney Village mayor Andy Matviak comments:

Delaware County Sheriff’s department Investigators arrested 28-year-old Jeffrey Roberts, of Sayre, Pennsylvania as a Fugitive From Justice.. Roberts is charged with Retail Theft of Property, as well as several misdemeanor traffic offenses. Roberts was incarcerated at Delaware county Jail on an unrelated charge at the time of his arrest, and he will be arraigned as a Fugitive From Justice in the Town of Delhi Court at a later time.

The American Red Cross urges eligible donors to make an appointment to give blood to help meet the constant need for blood this winter. A blood drive is being held in Sidney today, from 1:00 to 6:00 PM, at the Sidney Elks Lodge at 104 River Street, another blood drive is being held in West Oneonta from 1:00 to 6:00 PM at the West Oneonta Fire Department, at 2865 County Highway 8. Governor Cuomo won’t be giving his usual State of the State address in Albany this January, instead, he will give 6 regional addresses during the week of January 9th. The state’s minimum wage is going up at year’s end. Downstate counties & New York City will see higher minimum wages implemented due to a higher cost of living, in most of the upstate counties, the wage will be increased to $9.70 an hour. The increases go into effect on the last day of the year.

It now seems unlikely for the state lawmakers to be called back to Albany for a special session this week. Lawmakers were pushing for a pay increase for themselves for the fist time in 17 years; Governor Cuomo was pushing for stronger ethics reforms. Lawmakers come back to Albany to begin the 2017 session in January.

The Chenango United Way campaign will be ending on December 30th at 3:00 PM. Officials stated that they need about $21,500 to meet this year’s state goal of $419,00. 22 programs and 17 food pantries and soup kitchens received funding last year; donations can be made in person or mailed to 83 North Broad St., Norwich 13815 or by phone at 334-8815.

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer said that he wants Donald Trump to include “real spending” and not just tax breaks in his plan to overhaul America’s transportation infrastructure. Schumer said that he’s shared his view with the Republican president-elect; he said that actual investment of federal dollars is necessary if the nation is to repair and rebuild its infrastructure. Schumer says Democrats must stay true to their principles, but they shouldn’t oppose something “just because the name Trump is on it.” Trump vowed to repair and replace aging bridges, tunnels, airports and rail lines as part of a campaign to re-invigorate the nation’s transportation networks.

State officials are reminding New Yorkers that if they have an old TV, laptop, cell phone, tablet or other electronic device to dispose of, they cannot put it with their regular trash. The State Electronic Equipment recycling & re-use act makes it illegal to have those items thrown out, they must be disposed of properly due to toxins that could contaminate the soil, air or water. The law also requires manufacturers of electronic devices to take back the products they have sold. More information is available on the state DEC website.

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested several people on sealed indictment arrest warrant on a variety of drug charges Thursday. Charged were 20 year old Marissa Peck of Andes, 22 year old Zachery Mattice of Delhi, 35 year old Dennis Fickeria of Margaretville & 45 year old Abelardo Vincente of Hancock. All 4 were held in the Delaware County Jail on cash bail. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies also arrested 21-year-old Austin Rose of Andes on a sealed indictment arrest warrant; he’ll be arraigned on the undisclosed charges in January, when the charges will be unsealed. Rose was arrested at the Otsego County Correctional Facility where he is being held on a charge of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.

A Broome County Grand Jury handed up a 5-count indictment against 60-year-old Mark Tanner, for allegedly burglarizing 4 Binghamton businesses and menacing a police officer. The Broome County DA’s office reported that Tanner unlawfully entered JR’s Automotive Sales, Fairview Cleaners, Mr. Tire, and Broome Recycling, with intent to commit a crime. Tanner also displayed a weapon to responding police officers, with the intent to cause fear of physical injury, he faces court action shortly.

The Otsego County Sheriffs department arrested 32 year old Robert Colvin of Unadilla, for allegedly breaking into a woman’s house, shoving the victim & stealing prescription medication, Colvin was charged robbery and grand larceny; Colvin was arraigned in the Town of Unadilla Court and was sent to the county jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond.

State officials announced that a Specialist employed by The Children’s Home of Wyoming Conference was arrested and arraigned on a misdemeanor endangerment charge for allegedly smoking marijuana with 14-year-old child, while on an outing with the child. 27-year-old Michael Greenwood of Endicott was also charged with & Falsifying Business Records, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle. Greenwood was arraigned in Binghamton City Court and was released on his own recognizance. He has been terminated from his position.

State Police are investigating the report of a missing person, 36-year-old Jaime Nieves of Binghamton. Nieves was last seen in the area of Park Avenue in the City of Binghamton on December 3rd, he has not had any known contact with friends or family. The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office launched a Random Acts of Kindness Holiday Initiative this year, which involved Deputies engaging in random acts of kindness while on duty. Discretionary situations such as a broken tail light or other minor infraction would result in a presentation of a gift certificate instead of a ticket, all sponsored by the Deputies and local supporters. Deputies were on the lookout for citizens engaged in positive activity and would recognize them as well. The Delaware County Deputy Sheriff’s Police Benevolent Association donated a sum of money to purchase gift cards and gift certificates from Delaware County businesses as well as also soliciting donations from Delaware County citizens, organizations and businesses; over $1,200 was received. Also, with the assistance of the Delaware County Office for the Aging, 12 elderly Delaware County residents were selected to be the recipients of Christmas gifts funded and purchased solely through a donation by the PBA.

A memorial ceremony will be held tonight in Norwich for Norwich High School Class of 2016 Graduate Savannah Williams, who died in a 2-vehicle crash in Geneseo Tuesday. Kaitlyn Jackson was a friend of Williams and was also class president, she told WCDO News that tonight’s Memorial would begin at 6:00 PM at the Norwich High School Track:

Jackson said that the event would then move over the Chenango County Fair grounds. Police in Geneseo said that Williams was a current SUNY Geneseo student, she drove her car into the path of the tractor-trailer, Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.

State Police arrested 45-year-old Joseph Leonard of Delhi for Assault & Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation, after troopers responded to a report of a dispute at a home in the Town of Delhi. Leonard allegedly punched and choked a victim, which caused injuries. Leonard was arraigned in the Town of Delhi Court and was released, an order of protection was issued.

Governor Cuomo announced that underage drinking sweeps conducted by DMV investigators this year resulted in the seizure of 862 fraudulent licenses and the arrest of 818 individuals for underage drinking, both single year records. Through the year-round Operation Prevent initiative, DMV investigators work with state and local law enforcement agencies to conduct underage drinking and fake ID sweeps at bars, restaurants and concert venues across New York. The previous record of 751 seized ID documents and 758 arrests was set in 2015.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 42 year old Daniel White of Delhi Wednesday on charges of DWI, driving with a BAC of .08% or greater, speed not reasonable and imprudent, failure to stop for a stop sign, and for making an unsafe lane change following an investigation of a 1 car accident at Brick House Hill Road and County Highway 12 in Davenport. White allegedly failed to stop for a stop sign due to excessive speed, he left the roadway and struck a utility pole. White was released on tickets returnable to Davenport Town Court at a later date.

2 people have been arrested after State Police discovered a meth lab on State Route 206 in the Town of Triangle Tuesday. Police arrested 37 year old Thomas Parker of Berkshire and 35 year old Stephanie Keller of Whitney Point, Police seized methamphetamine oil, marijuana plants, 1 active & 2 spent one-pot methamphetamine labs, hazardous materials & $1,970 in cash, Both have been charged with criminal possession of controlled substance and unlawful manufacturing of meth, They were arraigned in the Town of Triangle Court and taken to the Broome County Jail without bail.

State Police arrested 52-year-old Richard Fidurski of Binghamton for Promoting a Sexual Performance of a Child and Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child, after an investigation by the members of the New York State Police Computer Crime Unit. Fidurski was arraigned in the Town of Chenango Court and was remanded to the Broome County Jail with no bail set. His next court date is pending.

State Police responded Wednesday to a 2 vehicle fatal collision involving a tractor-trailer and a car, on I-81 in the Town of Virgil. 59-year-old Roger Brooks of Virginia was driving a tractor-trailer; he struck a Toyota Corolla that was stopped in the driving lane, with the lights off, the tractor-trailer overturned off the shoulder of the roadway. The Toyota was driven by 40-year-old Rashida Brown, of Freeport, Long Island; Police said that she ran out of gas. Brown was transported to Cortland Regional Medical Center where she died from her injuries, No tickets have been issued. The investigation is continuing.

Police in Geneseo identified the victim a fatal crash Tuesday between a car and a tractor-trailer, as 18-year-old Savannah Williams of Norwich. Police said that Williams was a SUNY Geneseo student, she pulled off of Court Street, into the path of the tractor-trailer that was traveling on State Route 63. The tractor struck Williams’ car, Williams was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured,

The Sidney Central School District named Kerrie Johnston as the new Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Special Programs. The Board of Education approved the appointment at its December 20 meeting. Johnston will supervise curriculum and instruction, school improvement, principals, special programs, and special education, starting in February.

Governor Cuomo today announced that temporary lane closures associated with road and bridge construction projects on New York State highways will not be permitted from 6 a.m. on Friday, December 23, to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, December 27, and again from 6 a.m. on Friday, December 30, to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3 in order to accommodate motorists during the busy year-end holiday travel weekends. Some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs.

State Police are currently investigating a fatal accident that had occurred at about 3:52 a.m., this morning on Interstate Route 81 northbound, between the Marathon and McGraw exits. This accident involves a tractor-trailer and a car. The driving lane is currently closed due to the investigation but traffic can continue in the passing lane.

Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell announced that 49 year old Michael Gumaer pleaded guilty today In Broome County Court to 1st Degree Rape. Gumaer was arrested following the report of an attack on a 12-year-old Girl in August 2016 in Endicott. Gumaer will be sentenced on February 17th, 2017.

38-year-old Justin Barkley told a judge in Tompkins County Court that believed that he was shooting President Elect Donald Trump, at the Ithaca Wal-Mart parking lot on December 8th, and not UPS Driver William Schumacher. The judge has ordered Barkley to undergo a mental evaluation, to determine if Barkley is competent to stand trial. Barkley was taken into police custody after fleeing the scene, shooting at Police & engaging law enforcement in a standoff.

State Police responded Monday & Tuesday of this week to the Afton School, after written Bomb Threats were found in bathrooms, and were reported to the district office. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 32-year-old Matthew Rose of Unadilla on a sealed indictment warrant issued by the Delaware County Court, at the time of his arrest, ROSE was in possession of a small amount of marijuana, ROSE was charged with Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, plus 2 counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Narcotic, for allegedly selling prescription medications twice in the Village of Sidney. Rose was arraigned and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $40,000 cash bail or $80,000 secured bond.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant and arrested two residents in the Town of Colchester. Investigators charged 57-year-old Douglas James & 57 year old Karen James of Downsville, for Criminal Possession of Cocaine with the intent to sell, plus Criminal Possession of Marijuana. Investigators seized 1-½ pounds of Marijuana, plus Cocaine, $6,026 in cash, a digital scale, several rifles and Public Assistance Benefit cards. Both were arraigned & were remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $100,000 cash bail or $500,000 property bond.

The State Labor department released the unemployment rate numbers by county, for the month of November today. Locally, Chenango County had 4.8%, Delaware County had 4.9% & Otsego County had 4.3% unemployment, the statewide rate dropped 1 tenth to 5.1% in November.

State Police arrested 62-year-old Charlotte Hart of Bainbridge for Criminal Mischief, Disorderly Conduct & Harassment, after troopers responded to a report of an ongoing argument at the Xtra Mart in the Town of Bainbridge. Hart allegedly entered the store and was upset with a neighbor, who was working inside, and struck the woman in the face and smacked a cell phone from the woman’s hand. Hart was arraigned in the Town of Bainbridge Court and was released without bail being required. An order of protection was issued, she faces court action in the Town of Bainbridge on January 24th.

Governor Cuomo today announced that New York State’s Cigarette Strike Force seized 53,307 cartons of contraband cigarettes and 261,220 untaxed cigars in 2016. The combined street value of these items is approximately $5.6 million and the seizures represent a 117% increase in illegal tobacco confiscations. Locally, The Southern Tier had only 4 cartons of illegal cigarettes confiscated, but had over 42,000 illegal cigars confiscated, which was the second highest total in the state behind New York City.

New York’s 29 members of the Electoral College have cast their ballots for Hillary Clinton today, who won the state’s popular vote, despite losing the presidential race to Republican Donald Trump in the expected final Electoral College tabulations, which will be completed today. The electors gathered today in the state Capitol’s Senate chambers.

State police arrested 19 year old Christopher Tuckett of Floral Park, Long Island on 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Reckless Driving and other traffic violations, after a trooper observed a vehicle speeding at 106 miles per hour, in a 65 miles an hour zone on I-88 in the Town of Otego Sunday. Tuckett was found to be illegally possessing prescription pills, he was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Otego Court on Thursday.

SUNY Delhi University Police reported that 21 year old Steven Sutliff was found in good health Friday afternoon by Oneonta City Police at the Huntington Library. Sutliff was reported missing on Tuesday after he left Delhi on December 10th for Oneonta and told roommates he would return Monday December 12th.

The Word of Life church pastor Tiffanie Irwin of New Hartford was sentenced to 12 years in prison. in connection with the beating of 2 boys during a church “counseling session” last year. 9 defendants who belonged to the Word of Life Church parish in Oneida County were charged for the beatings that killed 19-year-old Lucas Leonard and severely injured 17-year-old Christopher Leonard.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 33 year old Candis Gier, of Walton on 2 counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, 2 counts of petty larceny, after an investigation into a report of a theft of prescription pills from a Walton residence. It appears less likely that a Special Session of the Legislature will be called before the end of the year, as Governor Cuomo & Senate leaders have differing agendas as the year closes. Governor Cuomo said that he wants to appropriate up to one billion more dollars to help the homeless, and expand of the state’s hate crimes law, lawmakers wants a pay raise for the first time in 17 years, & neither side is budging. Lawmakers will wind up back in Albany for a brand new session in January.

Attorney General Schneiderman urged all New Yorkers to take immediate steps to protect their personal information online, in the wake of Yahoo’s recent disclosure that a third party had breached its servers and accessed the personal data of over 1 billion users. The data compromised includes email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords (using MD5) and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers. The investigation indicates that the stolen information did not include passwords in clear text, payment card data, or bank account information. The Attorney General urges anyone with a Yahoo account to change their passwords and security questions — not only with Yahoo accounts, but for any other accounts which you use the same or similar information.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli reminded New Yorkers that contributions to a New York State 529 College Savings Program account are tax deductible. Contributions made by December 31st can provide up to $10,000 in state tax deductions on 2016 income tax filings. New Yorkers can open an account and if they already have one can contribute and deduct up to $5,000 from their New York State taxable income. Married couples filing jointly can deduct up to $10,000 each year.

A Sidney native has entered into the world of publishing, when he published his first science fiction novel earlier this month through Amazon.com. Scott Scavo told WCDO News is a 1995 Sidney High School Graduate who started his story as bedtime stories for his children, and wound up with so much material it became a book:

Delhi University police announced that they are searching for 21 year old Steven Sutliff, who told his roommates on Saturday afternoon that he was heading to Oneonta, and would return on Monday. Sutliff was reported missing on Tuesday evening. Sutliff is described as a 5’9″ white male, weighing about 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Governor Cuomo today announced that New York State will participate in the national “Drive Sober or get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign to crackdown on impaired driving this holiday season. Drivers can expect sobriety checkpoints and an increased number of Troopers patrolling New York roadways, starting today through Sunday, January 1st, 2017.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and the Village of Sidney Police Department arrested 46 year old Chanin Ives on an Arrest Warrant issued out of the Town of Guilford. Ives was arrested on an Arrest Warrant for 2nd degree Aggravated Harassment, Ives was arraigned in the Town of Guilford court & was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $500 cash bail.
