Sidney Police Department received report of an armed robbery Friday Afternoon at about 1:35 PM at Smiley’s at 17 West Main Street. The suspect displayed a Handgun, demanded cash, he was wearing a black and purple wig, blue Oneonta YellowJackets hooded sweatshirt and pink slippers. The suspect left went hrough yards, left behind the disguises and left in a Silver Subaru parked on Adams Street, & left the village. The suspect is a bald or balding, heavy set white male over 6 feet tall. The Susquehanna Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has received a $5,000 grant investment from national nonprofit Petco Love in support of its lifesaving work on behalf of animals in Otsego County through clinics aimed at expanding access for animals who need care. The Petco Love program helps find homes for pets in partnership with more than 4,000 organizations, like the Susquehanna SPCA, in order to get pets the care they need & adopted into homes, and make sure that pets are not unnecessarily euthanized. Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 26 year old Justin Kucera of West Edmeston following an animal cruelty investigation. Kucera was charged with Overdriving, Torturing, Injuring Animals; Failure to provide proper Sustenance, following an investigation into a dog complaint in Edmeston. Broome County Sheriff’s deputies responded last Thursday to a report of inappropriate behavior and abuse of a juvenile female victim in the Town of Maine, where a family acquaintance had conducted several inappropriate physical and sexual interactions with a child. 74 year old Mark Turner of the Town of Maine was charged with 4 Counts of Sexual Abuse, he was arrested and taken into custody without incident and was being held for Court action at the Broome County Correctional Facility.

39 year old Timothy Jarczynski of Maryland pleaded guilty to DWI in Davenport Town Court & was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge. On September 28, 2022, a citizen called 911 to report an erratic driver on State Route 23, after following Jarczynski for approximately 10 minutes, he crashed into a ditch where a State Trooper determined that Jarczynski was impaired at the time of the accident. Jarczynski was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge and his license was revoked, he was ordered to attend a victim impact panel and successfully complete the impaired driver’s program, If he obtains a driver’s license, he will be required to install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle he owns or operates, he could still face 1 year in jail if he violates any of these conditions.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 23 year old Jarrett Griffin of Walton on an arrest warrant issued out of the Town of Tompkins Court. On April 4th, Deputies located Griffin and arrested him, Griffin is accused of making threats over texts and Facebook, he’s been charged with 3 counts of Aggravated Harassment, he was processed, and turned over to the custody of the Delaware County Jail for future court action.

45 year old Katrina Lott of West Edmeston pleaded guilty to Driving While Intoxicated and was sentenced to 3 years of probation, in Deposit Town Court last week. On June 13, 2023, Lott was driving on County Route 8, when she lost control of her vehicle and drove into the ditch. A State Trooper responded to the crash scene and determined that Lott was likely under the influence of alcohol when open containers were spotted in the vehicle. Lott had a BAC of .16% – two times the legal limit.

2 Law Enforcement officers were killed, and the suspect was also killed in an incident in Liverpool Sunday night. Syracuse Police Officers encountered a suspicious vehicle Sunday Night, they attempted a traffic stop & the vehicle took off, officers did get the License plate number, it was traced to a Liverpool address to stop the vehicle, Syracuse Police & Onondaga Sheriff’s Deputies responded & were encountered by an armed male and an exchange of gunfire followed. One Syracuse Police Officer and one Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputy were struck by gunfire. The armed suspect was also shot, all 3 were taken to Upstate University Hospital, all 3 succumbed to their injuries.

The Acco Brands plant in Sidney is being sold, Acco Officials said that the company signed a non-binding letter of intent to sell the building to a renewable energy company, if the building is sold in 2024, operations would continue in Sidney throughout much of 2024. CONVALT of Watertown is believed to be the purchaser as they announced on their website their plans to build their main factory, in Sidney with a targeted date of commercial operation in the 1st quarter of 2025.

24-year-old Kelvin Marfo of Delhi was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operator of a Motor Vehicle, plus other charges following an accident investigation. On April 6th Deputies responded to an iPhone Crash Detection for a motor vehicle accident on State Highway 28 in the Town of Meredith. Deputies found the motor vehicle accident, 2 of the occupants were transported for non-life-threatening injuries to a local hospital, while 2 others were treated by EMS. Marfo’s driving privileges were suspended for Failing to Answer a Summons, Marfo was issued an Appearance Ticket to appear before the Town of Meredith Court at a later date.

Last Wednesday, Oneonta Police Department was called to investigate a reported gunshot wound by A.O. Fox hospital emergency room staff. Officers learned that 51-year-old John Walley of Otego was transported to the hospital by a third party in a private vehicle, which left before police arrived. Walley was interviewed briefly and stated that he was on Chestnut Street when he was injured by a bullet, no evidence at the scene was found, he was re-interviewed & has refused to cooperate. The case will be closed but may be re-opened should additional information be received and the victim agree to cooperate. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call, where it was alleged that a fully disabled and incompetent individual had been left on a bus after it was parked for the evening, & after noticing that the victim had not returned home, a residential facility aid had discovered the victim’s location and brought her to a hospital. Deputies charged the bus driver, 74 year-old Lyndon Doig and the aid, 63 year-old Norma Castro, both of Walton, with endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person, they are scheduled to appear in front of the Walton Town Court at a later date.

10 jurors have been seated in the Schoharie County trial of Nauman Hussain, the owner of Prestige Limo, the company hired to transport 17 people in a stretch limo that died, along with the driver & 2 people in a gas station, in an accident in Schoharie in October 2018. Hussain is charged with multiple counts of 2nd degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. He initially pleaded guilty to 20 felonies in a deal that required no prison time, but a new judge rejected that deal & ordered a new trial. The trial requires 12 jurors & 2 alternates before it can proceed.

The Broome County County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a single-car motor vehicle accident on I-88 westbound near the Exit 3 on-ramp in the town of Fenton. Officers reported that a Honda sedan traveling westbound on I-88 left the highway, crashing into the Chenango River, at about 11:30 this morning, both occupants were removed from the river by Deputies and transported to Wilson Hospital for their injuries. The unidentified driver suffered serious life threatening injuries, the passenger sustained minor injuries. Traffic was closed for several hours today in the right lane of I-88 westbound for the accident investigation concludes.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that Johnathon Aldrich of Binghamton will serve 14 years behind bars and 5 years of post-release supervision after pleading guilty to attempted murder, burglary, robbery & other charges for a home-invasion robbery and attempted murder in Binghamton on July 31^st, 2022. Law Enforcement Agencies around the state are participating in “Operation Safe Stop Day” today, where police officers are checking to see if motorists are stopping for school busses with their flashing lights on, picking up or dropping off students. It is estimated that 50-thousand New Yorkers illegally pass stopped school buses each day that school is in session. Penalties for a first-time offense include a fine of up to 400 dollars, five points on a person’s drivers license and possibly 30 days in jail.

The family of Jorge Jimenez, who was fatally struck by a vehicle driven by former Syracuse University basketball coach Jim Boeheim in February 2019, has agreed to settle a lawsuit against Boeheim. Terms of the settlement will remain sealed, Jimenez was a passenger in a car that that skidded on Interstate 690 and hit a guardrail. Boeheim was driving home after a game when he swerved to avoid the car and hit Jimenez, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Boeheim was not charged by police investigating the crash.

32-year-old Kyle Packer was arrested by Otsego County Sheriff’s deputies following a domestic dispute in Edmeston. Packer allegedly choked a victim & several items were also damaged, he left the scene, but was later arrested on a separate outstanding warrant for allegedly trying to use a fake $100 bill to purchase items at a retail establishment. Packer was charged with Strangulation, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, Criminal Mischief, Harassment, Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument & Petty Larceny, he is being held in the Otsego County Jail pending arraignment.

A Florida man has been sentenced to prison in a gas station skimming scheme in upstate locations. 34-year-old Yuny Hurtado Rodriguez is accused of working with others between April 2016 and July 2019, to build skimming devices inside gas pumps in Albany, Broome, and Montgomery counties, in order to use the stolen information to create fraudulent debit and credit cards that were used to obtain money orders, gift cards and cash. Hurtado-Rodriguez received 57 months in prison and will have to forfeit $606,000.

The Pennsylvania State Police announced that Nikolas Petrich was taken into custody in Long Eddy, today by New York State Police. Petrich is 1 of 6 people accused in the September 2022 murder of Tyler Barber in Great Bend, Pennsylvania, 5 other suspects were arrested in Towanda, Pennsylvania last week. State police say Barber was tied to a tree & beaten by the 6 suspects, Petrich & one other are accused of beating Barber with a baseball bat. All 6 were charged with homicide, kidnapping, and various other charges. Petrich is in a New York jail awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania to be arraigned on the charges.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded March 18^th to a 2 car accident with injuries on County Highway 26, in the Town of Colchester. 1 vehicle had left the lane of travel, crossed over the double yellow line, and struck an oncoming vehicle head on. 49-year-old Andras Kasuba of Brooklyn was charged with DWI, driving with a BAC greater than 0.08%, aggravated DWI, plus 3 counts of Assault & several other charges. The driver of the other vehicle and 1 passenger were transported by Lifenet to Albany Medical Center and a 3^rd passenger was taken to Delaware Valley Hospital, Kasuba was released on tickets returnable to the Town of Colchester Court at a later date.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that Taykwann Browne of Brooklyn pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Weapon, for illegally possessing a gun in Binghamton in January. The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force assisting New York State parole, located Browne who had absconded from parole supervision and had an active homicide warrant in New York City, Browne drove off, leading police on a chase through the City of Binghamton, he crashed the car and fled on foot but was apprehended a short time later by police. Browne will be sentenced to 7 years in State prison followed by 5 years post release supervision on June 30th, he still faces action in New York City.

Students in the Hancock School District were dismissed early after being under a lockout for part of the morning on Tuesday. The issue began following a report of an investigation of a parent or guardian of a Hancock Student. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 38 year-old Danielle Pitre of Staten Island, for driving with a suspended registration. Deputies were patrolling Sunday on State Highway 30 in the Town of Colchester, they conducted a traffic stop, Pitre was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended/Revoked Registration, Failure to turn in License Plate to DMV, Failure to Notify DMV of Address Change, and several other lesser charges, she was released on the traffic tickets and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Colchester Court at a later date to answer the charge.

Delaware County District Attorney’s office announced that 40 year old Denise Wells of Herkimer was convicted of 1 count of Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, in the Town of Delhi Court Wednesday. Wells was charged after driving erratically through Delhi on December 12th of last year, she eventually drove off the road on State Highway 10, she was under the influence of heroin. Wells was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge, she was also ordered to undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation, attend and complete an Impaired Driver Program, and attend a Victim Impact Panel, her license was revoked for 6 months, and she was ordered to pay $900 in fines & fees.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a physical injury domestic dispute in the Town of Union. 66 year old Brian Sanks of the Town of Union, had attempted to smother his Girlfriend in her sleep, threatened to shoot her with a pistol, and threatened to use a taser baton on her. Sanks was taken into custody by deputies and an Extreme Risk Protection Order was subsequently issued, several weapons & drug paraphernalia were removed from Sanks residence. Sanks was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, he was arraigned and has remained in custody of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office.

The Broome County District Attorney’s office announced that 68-year-old Alan Geller of Binghamton was found guilty of Forcible Touching. Geller was a Physician’s Assistant who was accused of groping a women patient inappropriately while conducting a physical examination in December of 2021. Geller faces up to 1 year in jail at sentencing.

State Police arrested 73 year old Brooks Anderson of Albany for Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle. Anderson was observed traveling at a high rate of speed by a trooper on I-88 in Worcester, the trooper attempted a traffic stop but Anderson fled into the town of Oneonta, where he was boxed in by Police vehicles and then refused to exit the vehicle. Anderson was ultimately taken into custody and was processed, he will appear in the Town of Worcester Town Court on December 20th.

State Police and local law enforcement agencies issued a record 3,062 tickets from April 1 to November 17 of this year as part of Operation Hardhat. Last year, Police issued 2,336 tickets, this year’s tickets, included over 1200 were for speeding, 426 for using a cell phone while driving, 124 were for violating the Move Over Law, 229 tickets were issued in the Southern Tier.

Vestal Police have arrested an unidentified 17 year old for 2nd degree Manslaughter, Criminal possession of a forged instrument & 3 counts of reckless endangerment, for being the driver of a vehicle that crashed on November 24th. 18 year old Kadin Abdullah was pronounced dead at the scene of that accident.

Law Enforcement agencies are investigating a 1 vehicle accident early Thursday morning in Vestal at Clayton Avenue and Lagrange Street. The initial report suggests that the vehicle left the roadway & struck a fence, 18-year-old Kadin Abdullah of Vestal was a passenger in the vehicle & he was pronounced dead at the scene, the investigation is continuing.

26 year old Kout Akol of Binghamton was convicted for 1st degree manslaughter, criminal possession of a weapon, tampering with physical evidence & endangering the welfare of a child, in Broome County Court Wednesday. Akol was arrested on July 3rd of 2021 for the stabbing death of 27 year old Takecia Mitchell in her Binghamton apartment. Akol faces up to 25 years in prison, he will be sentenced on February 23rd.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Wednesday the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services has reversed its eligibility criteria for Critical Access Hospital status. The program allows rural healthcare providers to receive federal reimbursements to help ensure they are able to service patients. The rule reversal is expected to go into effect January 1st.

Attorney General Letitia James distributed the 1st round of payments from the opioid settlements to the Southern Tier. In 2022, the Southern Tier will receive a total of $4.8 million, from the $1.5 billion settlement Attorney General James secured with the manufacturers and distributors of opioids for prevention efforts. Later this year, the Southern Tier will receive additional payments from the settlements with Endo Health Solutions, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, and Allergan. Locally Broome County receives $1.6 Million dollars, Chenango County, $308,000, Delaware County: $327,000.

Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond awarded Deputy Samantha Acuna with the Sheriff’s Superstar Award for meritorious service while in the performance of duty. On April 8th, Deputy Acuna was dispatched to a “routine” welfare check following a call to 911 with an “open line”. Upon gaining entrance to the residence, Deputy Acuna found a male victim suffering from an apparent stroke, rendered first aid and immediately called for medical assistance, and likely saved the victim’s life.

State Police members from Troop C removed 42 impaired drivers from the roadways in the Southern Tier in March. The majority of the charges stem from misdemeanor Driving While Intoxicated charges, several people were charged with other crimes, including robbery, and drug possession.

42-year-old Jeremie Hoyt of Davenport, New York, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to 2 counts of sexual exploitation of a child, 2 counts of distribution of child pornography, and 1 count of possession of child pornography. Hoyt is being held pending sentencing scheduled for August 24, 2022, he faces at least 15 years and up to 110 years imprisonment on the charges, and a fine of up to $250,000.

Delaware County Sheriff Deputies responded to a domestic dispute at a residence in the Village of Walton on March 26th, 25-year-old Jonathan Stein had left prior to patrols arrival, he is accused of damaging property of the female victim. On March 30th, 2022 Deputies were contacted by Walton Police that they had Stein under arrest on unrelated charges. Deputies took custody of Stein, he was charged with 6 counts of Criminal Mischief, he was processed and released on appearance tickets and is to appear in the Village of Walton Court at a later date.

Sidney Police investigated the theft of tools and construction equipment from a local business last month. Surveillance cameras helped police in identifying the person responsible, & an arrest warrant was issued for 37 year old Peter Puglisi of Afton. On Monday, Sidney Police located Puglisi, he was taken into custody and charged with Petty Larceny, he was arraigned in Village of Sidney Court & he was released to appear back in court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies, were dispatched Sunday to a Domestic dispute in the Town of Delhi. 28-year-old Michael Stein of Delhi allegedly engaged another person in a physical domestic dispute, and unlawfully imprisoned the victim in his residence. Deputies charged Stein with Unlawful Imprisonment, Menacing, and Reckless Endangerment, he was released on appearance tickets for Town of Delhi Court on a later date.
