Chenango County Health Department reported today that the number of Active Cases of COVID 19 is back up to levels they had in January & they have 593 quarantined. Health Department Spokesman Isaiah Sutton comments:

O’Connor Hospital in Delhi is holding a COVID-19 vaccine booster clinic on Saturday, from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, with the Moderna vaccine only. Appointments are required at 746-0525. Also, the FoxCare Center in Oneonta is holding a COVID-19 vaccine booster clinic on Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, that clinic will provide boosters for Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 41-year-old Robert Smith of Walton and charged him with one count each of Criminal Mischief and Petit Larceny. Smith is accused of unlawfully removing the catalytic converter from a vehicle without owner’s consent which resulted in damage to the vehicle. Smith was released on an appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Walton Court at a later date.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the Public Health and Health Planning Council passed an emergency regulation and the Health Commissioner issued a determination requiring all teachers, administrators and other school employees to submit to weekly COVID-19 testing unless they show proof of vaccination, with either a CDC vaccine card or the Excelsior Pass.   The Governor also announced that the State Department of Health has finalized and released official guidance for classroom instruction regarding Facemasks, which closely echoes the CDC guidance which districts were advised to follow. The operator of Prestige Limousine, 31 year old Nauman Hussain, has pleaded guilty to 20 counts of negligent homicide in connection with the fatal Limo crash in Schoharie in 2018.   Hussain will be placed on interim probation for 2 years, will serve 1,000 hours of community service, he will not serve jail time & he was ordered to pay an undisclosed amount of money in restitution to the families of the deceased.  The October 6th, 2018, crash killed 18 people in the limo including the driver, plus 2 pedestrian in the parking lot of the Apple Barrel Convenience store at State Routes 30 and 30A in Schoharie.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation extending virtual access to public meetings under the State’s Open Meetings Law, which allows New Yorkers to virtually participate in local government meetings during the COVID-19 pandemic, as long as the public has the ability to view or listen to the meeting and as long as the meeting is recorded and later transcribed. This change will reduce the need for congregation at public meetings while the Delta variant is prevalent, while ensuring public business can continue.

The State Health Department released the statistics for COVID 19 testing on Sunday, with over 101,000 tests administered & a positivity rate jumping up to 3.75%, the majority of those were of the Delta Variant among people who were not vaccinated. Patient Hospitalizations went back over 2,000 Sunday, ICU patients are just over 400 and those on ventilators are up to 188, there were 29 deaths from COVID Sunday, and over 29,000 Vaccine Doses were administered.

The Chenango United Way will be merging with the Delaware & Otsego Counties United Way soon; Chenango United Way Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco told WCDO News that the pandemic made the situation difficult for many not-for-profit organizations:

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Friday to a custody dispute in the Town of Middletown, Upon arrival, Deputies learned that the suspect, 30-year old Jeremey Aubry of Margaretville, had taken an 8-year old child from a birthday party on a dirt bike and operated the dirt bike through the Village of Margaretville without helmets. Aubry was charged with endangering the welfare of a child & was released on an appearance ticket for Middletown Court on a later date.

Governor Cuomo declared a State of Emergency on for more than half the counties in the state, including all of the local counties, as Hurricane Henri was aiming for Long Island Sunday. The Governor’s declaration of a state of emergency ensures resources which are assigned for State use only are provided to local governments to help protect citizens and infrastructure. Governor Cuomo activated 500 National Guard troops for deployment to help localities with storm response efforts. A Flash Flood watch remains in effect through 8:00 PM tonight.

State police have identified the deceased in a Hit & Run Motor Vehicle & Pedestrian accident on August 15th, or 16th as 72 year old Alan Weill of Oneonta. State Police continue to ask the public to call them at 561-7400 if they were in the area and may have observed anything. Police announced earlier in the week that that had located the vehicle involved in the hit & run accident, which occurred on State Route 205 near Country Club Road in the town of Oneonta.

Delaware County Public Health received 61 new positive cases of COVID-19 in the last week; there are currently 90 active cases in the county with 3 hospitalizations & 126 quarantined. According to The CDC Delaware County is currently at high level of community transmission. The CDC and Delaware County Public Health recommend that everyone, even those who are fully vaccinated, wear a mask in indoor public locations, to maximize protection from all variants. In New York State, the Delta variant of COVID-19 has been found to be the predominant strain of COVID-19 currently circulating.

State Police reported that 27 citations were issued during an Operation Hard Hat detail in Broome County Thursday. Troopers were set up while workers completed bridge work along Interstate 81 in Binghamton; they issued 19 tickets for speeding, 2 for violating seatbelt laws, & 6 for other violations.

The CDC recommends that people with moderately to severely compromised immune systems should receive an additional dose of a COVID-19 vaccine about 28 days after a 2nd dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. The additional dose of COVID-19 vaccine is recommended only for those being treated for solid tumors or malignancies, those who have had organ transplants, those receiving STEM cell transplants, those being treated with certain cortisone therapies, or those with Chenango County Public Health will host a 3rd dose Moderna Vaccine Clinic on September 1st, at the South Plaza in Norwich from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 2 people Tuesday after Deputies responded to a burglary reported in the Town of Hamden. The home owner’s Video captured 2 subjects, 1 with a handgun, who forcefully entered the home. Randy Hawkins of Morris was taken into custody by State Police; George Klinger was taken into custody at his Morris residence by members of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and State Police. Officers executed a search warrant at Hawkins’ and Klinger’s Morris residence and recovered a quantity of firearms, ammunition and other property reported stolen in recent Delaware County burglaries. Hawkins and Klinger were charged with 1st degree burglary and criminal use of a firearm, they were arraigned in the Town of Hamden Court, Hawkins was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $75,000 cash bail and Klinger was remanded on $40,000 cash bail. The investigation is on-going and more arrests are anticipated.

The Chenango County Public Health announced that with the increase on COVID 19 cases, they are once again releasing their statistics every day. Today they reported 94 active cases, 7 hospitalized with 193 quarantined; they are up over 3700 cases with 80 deaths since the start of the pandemic. This Saturday, a 2nd dose Pfizer COVID vaccination clinic will be held at the old Label Shopper location in the South Plaza in Norwich from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. The State Fair is scrapping its traditional “Governor’s Day” event, as Governor Cuomo is resigning 4 days after the Fair starts this Friday in Syracuse. Traditionally, the state’s Governor does a ceremonial ribbon cutting at the start of every State Fair, Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul said that she plans to attend the State Fair at some point; she becomes Governor on August 24th.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s office arrested 33 year old Brian Marshall of Camden after allegedly stabbing 5 people Monday afternoon after an altercation in the Goodlife Bar of Camden where he used a sharp metal pick to stab the 5 victims. Marshall was taken into custody in the bar’s parking lot after deputies deployed a Taser. None of the injuries were life threatening. Marshall was charged with 5 counts of 2nd degree Assault, Marshall was also arrested by Otsego County Sheriff’s Office Sunday for 3rd & 4th degree Grand Larceny and several traffic tickets after failure to comply with officers trying to stop him in a stolen vehicle, he was issued appearance tickets after his Sunday arrest, Marshall is waiting for court action on all the charges & more charges may be forthcoming.

The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown has announced that 38 previous members of the Hall’s fraternity will be on hand to honor Derek Jeter, Larry Walker, Ted Simmons, and Marvin Miller when they are inducted into the Hall September 8th. The induction ceremony will take place on Wednesday, September 8th at 1:30 p.m. on the grounds Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown. The ceremony will also be aired live on MLB Network.
