Sidney Police responded to a trespassing complaint on March 17th at a vacant home on Ritton Street in the Village. During the investigation it was learned that a male involved in the case had an active arrest warrant issued by Delaware County Family Court. 41 year old James Nash was arrested on a Delaware County Family Court warrant & was then turned over to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.

Wegmans has issued a voluntary recall for select store brand pre-cut fruit due to possible listeria contamination. Certain Wergman’s brands of Watermelon, Pineapple, Cantalopes & Melons are part of the recall, the items may be returned to the Customer Service desk for a full refund. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accident that killed an Otsego County man Sunday morning. The crash happened around 4:45 a.m. Sunday in the town of Brookfield, deputies found a Jeep Cherokee off the road and overturned partially in a creek. 36-year-old Travis Chesebro of West Edmeston was pronounced dead at the scene, the investigation is ongoing.

Governor Kathy Hochul reported that the State Health Department is closely monitoring BA.2 variant of COVID 19 as the positivity rate has increased over the last several days. On Sunday, the rate increased back up to 1.98%, 901 Patients are Hospitalized, there are 159 in an ICU with 71 on ventilators, 6 died in hospitals & nursing homes Sunday from the virus.

Today is “National Agriculture Day” a day to celebrate the importance of the American Farm, Chenango County Farm Bureau President Bradd Vickers told WCDO News that the number of farms continues to trend downward:

Vickers said that Agriculture has contributed more than 5.7 billion dollars to New York State’s economy, there are 33,400 farms in the State with 6,900,000 acres of operated farmland, more information is available at ccfbny.org.

The annual St. Baldrick’s fundraiser in Chenango County shattered last year’s record of $38,315, by bringing in over $52,000 Saturday. 40 participants shaved their heads, in solidarity with children enduring cancer treatments, Saturday’s event was dedicated to 6 year old Trinity O’Connor, of Sidney, who recently passed away following a 4 year battle with cancer.

Governor Cuomo discussed his plans to strengthen the Upstate economy, with income tax cuts for middle class families, free tuition at SUNY & CUNY Schools for middle class families, and the continuing of the Regional Economic Development Councils.

Governor Cuomo announced a series of actions to firmly secure access to reproductive rights in New York State. The State will ensure that contraceptive drugs and devices are covered by commercial health insurance policies without co-pays, coinsurance, or deductibles regardless of the future of the Affordable Care Act; contraceptives are available in amounts exceeding one month’s supply at a time; and all medically necessary abortion services are covered by commercial health insurance policies without co-pays, coinsurance, or deductibles. The announcement coincides with this weekend’s Women’s Marches in Washington D.C., across New York State and across the country, as well as the 44th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court Roe vs. Wade decision.

On Thursday January 19th, Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 35-year-old Brian Bennett of Stamford, on charge of obstructing governmental administration, felony assault, and felony assault on a police officer following a report of an assault in progress at a Restaurant in the Village of Stamford. Deputies allege that Bennett repeatedly struck another person leading to a fractured vertebra, and then kicking a Deputy in the face. Bennett was later arraigned in Stamford Town Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $10,000 bail.

State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced a settlement with Cigna, requiring the health insurer to eliminate a ban on coverage for claims for neuropsychological testing of psychiatric conditions and autism spectrum disorder. An investigation was launched following a complaint last year about Cigna’s policy. Under the terms of the settlement, the company agrees to comply with Timothy’s Law, which is named for a 13-year-old Schenectady boy who committed suicide after an insurance denial. The settlement requires Cigna to revise its policies, pay autism claims previously rejected, and pay a penalty of $50,000.

Chenango County Sheriff’s office arrested 23 year old Branden Ward of Brookfield for Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession of Marihuana, and additional vehicle and traffic violations. Ward was charged when correctional officers received information of narcotics attempting to be brought into the Chenango County Jail. Ward is accused of selling narcotics, and was later found to be in possession of heroin, suboxone, and marihuana. Ward was also allegedly operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license & was wanted by the New Hartford Police Department on a separate charge. Ward was arraigned and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail & will reappear in court at a later date.

State Police stopped a vehicle traveling west on State Route 17 in the Town of Sanford for a traffic infraction. Troopers conducted a search of the vehicle and discovered approximately 7 ½ pounds of marihuana. 22 year old Andrew Reid of Queens, was arrested for second-degree criminal possession of marihuana, he was arraigned in the Town of Sanford Court and remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail. 20 year old Andeka Morgan of Queens was charged with unlawful possession of marihuana and released.

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance announced that the income tax filing season officially begins today. New York taxpayers with household income of $64,000 or less in 2016 can qualify to use Free File software, the Tax Department is hosting 54 Facilitated-Self Assistance sites throughout New York State, each staffed by Tax Department experts. The Unatego School District Board of Education will be deciding next month on the recommendations from a Facilities study on the district’s buildings. Unatego Superintendent Dave Richards explains:

Richards said that the 2 Elementary school buildings are each about 90 years old & would require millions of dollars in renovations, however the need for the extra space is negated by the fact that the district population has decreased by 28% over the last 10 years.

State Police from Oneonta arrested 18 year old Brian Colon of the Bronx and 18 year old Nicole Nunez of Manhattan for Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument. The arrests occurred after an off duty Trooper called and reported that he had possibly received counterfeit ten dollar bills from a man during a sale on Craigslist. The investigation determined that the off duty Trooper was selling four tire rims on Craigslist and agreed to meet Colon in Oneonta to complete the transaction, Police accuse Colon of paying the Trooper with 70 counterfeit ten dollar bills, and that Nunez had also knowingly possessed several counterfeit ten dollar bills. Colon and Nunez were both arraigned in the Town of Oneonta Court and remanded to the Otsego County Jail in lieu of a $750 cash bail.

Governor Cuomo announced that the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy has commended the State’s program that trains law enforcement officers to administer naloxone, to reverse heroin and opioid overdoses. 1,400 police officers from 54 counties have attended the State’s training, and emergency responders have used the naloxone to save the lives of 38 New Yorkers who had overdosed. Governor Cuomo also announced a new public awareness and education campaign featuring a website, combatheroin.ny.gov.

The state Gaming Commission approved New York entering into a new multi-state lottery game, called Monopoly Millionaires’ Club, the first drawing will be Friday October 24th. Tickets are $5 each; the prize pool starts at $15 million and grows up to $25 million if there is no winner. The game is projected to bring in more than $34 million annually for the state

A newly created database of New Yorkers deemed too mentally unstable to carry firearms has grown to 34,500 names. The database is the result of the Safe Act. Gun control supporters argue a wide net is appropriate, given the potentially dire consequences. Under the law, the reports prepared by doctors, psychologists, nurses and social workers are first sent to county officials. If they agree with the assessments, the officials then input the names into the state database. The information is retained for five years. If the authorities find a person in the database has a gun permit they are required to revoke the license and seize any guns. The people in the database are barred from obtaining a permit until their names are purged

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has awarded $197 million to New York State, to help finance improvements to water projects to protect public health and the environment. The money will be used to upgrade sewage plants and drinking water systems throughout the state. This funding, which is awarded annually, is in addition to the $340 million NY recently received for Hurricane Sandy resiliency projects

The State Police Bureau of investigation and State Police Computer Crimes Unit arrested 20 year old William Miller of Pittsfield for promoting a sexual performance by a child and possessing a sexual performance by a child. Miller was arraigned in town of Morris court and sent to the Otsego County jail on $5,000 bail. He will re-appear in town of Pittsfield court November 3rd

Governor Cuomo chose not re-appoint Republican judge Victoria Graffeo to the state’s highest court, picking instead a Democratic judge from the Albany area. The pick of Leslie Stein, means Democrats will have four of the seven seats on the Court of Appeals, for the first tim in modern history. It’s the third Democratic woman picked for the court since Cuomo took office in 2011. If re-elected Nov 4th, Cuomo would be able to appoint the four other seats, allowing him to reshape the entire court. Court of appeas judges serve for 14 years, but must retire at age 70. The state Health Department announced that 14 cases of the Enterovirus were confirmed in western New York. The virus has landed a significant number of children at health centers and hospitals across the country. Enterovirus results in difficulties breathing and severe respiratory issues. There is no vaccine to prevent the infection and there is no anti-viral medication to treat the infection. Prevention methods include washing hands, avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces.

State Troopers arrested 52-year-old Robert Slack of Susquehanna, Pennsylvania for Driving While Intoxicated, following a motor vehicle accident on State Route 205 in Oneonta. Slack refused to submit to a blood test. He was issued a ticket returnable to the Town of Oneonta Court on October 7th.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies seized a quantity of drugs and arrested 35-year-old Francis Smith of Kingston today, after investigating illegally parked vehicles in Arkville. Smith was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, which violated the terms of his probation in Ulster County. Smith is accused of possessing a switchblade knife, & he may also face drug possession charges upon completion of a laboratory analysis of the seized drugs. Smith was arraigned in the Town of Middletown Court and remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $1000 cash bail.

Assemblyman Bill Magee nearly doubled his campaign coffers in the final days of his successful fight to hang onto his seat, according to the state Board of Elections. Magee raised $54,305 between August 25th and September 15th in his effort to defeat Sherrill City Commissioner Mike Hennessy in the democratic primary. Magee beat Hennessy 2,082 to 1,431; he will face Republican John Salka of Brookfield in the November election.

Home sales in New York fell 9.5% in August compared to the same period in 2013. Median sale prices stayed flat, while some areas of the state, including the Southern Tier, had an increase in homes on the market and fewer sales. Nearly 11,000 homes were sold in New York in August, the year-to-date sales total of 66,635 was a 4.4% drop compared to the same period in 2013. The median sale price so far this year was $225,000, unchanged from a year ago. Pending sales fell 1.5%.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and state Education Department Commissioner John King said a survey would be sent to each school district, seeking information on actions they have taken, to implement provisions of the Dignity for all Students Act. The Act is state’s 1^st anti-bullying legislation, the results of the survey will be used to identify steps that schools have taken, and model policies and practices now being implemented by districts, to help ensure students are provided safe school environments.

The New York National Guard and the State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services are giving a free two-hour training session At 11 AM Saturday on the SUNY Broome campus. Those who register will receive a backpack filled with supplies that can assist in the event of an emergency. Registration for the event is free but space is limited. The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down near Reading, yesterday around 4:40 PM. The damages showed that this is an EF-1 tornado with wind speeds between 86 and 110 mph. Officials are continuing to investigate other sites across the state where other damage was reported.

State Police are teaming up with the Parks and Recreation Department for a new campaign, to ensure everyone is buckling up. More than 200 people killed in car accidents in New York last year were not wearing a seat belt. The agencies hope to reduce the number of fatalities by highlighting the importance of bucking up & the importance of using car seats for children. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration said car crashes are the leading cause of death for children age 1 to 13.

Assemblyman Bill Magee has filed petitions to force a September Democratic primary against Michael Hennessy, the party’s pick in the 121st District. Democrats in Madison and Oneida counties dropped Magee and designated Hennessy, however, Magee won the endorsement of Otsego County Democrats. Magee has served 12 terms in office. This is his first primary challenge. Brookfield Town Supervisor John Salka filed petitions to run on the Republican and Conservative Party lines.

Governor Cuomo will seek legislation to let the state recoup millions in school tax breaks paid to high-income New Yorkers who did not qualify to receive them. The announcement came after an investigation found an estimated $28 million in school property-tax subsidies, since 2011, were granted to households ineligible to receive them because they earned more than $500,000 a year.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s department arrested 51-year-old William Smith & 46 year old Lisa Marie Labouf for 2nd degree Assault, Endangering the Welfare of a Child and 2nd degree Harassment. The 2 are accused of assaulting a female victim and harassing another female victim, in front of 2 children. Smith was arraigned in the Town of McDonough Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $20,00 cash bail. Labouf was arraigned in the Town of Pharsalia Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of a $20,00 cash bail. Both are to reappear in the Town of German Court at a later date.

The Chenango county Sheriff’s department arrested 29-year-old Bradley Short of Otego for Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Officer and Reckless Endangerment. Short was charged after failing to stop for law enforcement for allegedly speeding. Short was arraigned in the Town of Plymouth Court and remanded to the Chenango County jail. Short was charged the following day with 1 count of Promoting prison contraband, where he is accused of possessing marihuana in the county jail, he was issued an appearance ticket for Town of Norwich court at a later date.
