State Police arrested 47 year old Jason Nugent of Vernon for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, after a trooper initiated a traffic stop of a vehicle speeding on State Highway 23 in the town of Plymouth. The trooper learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen in Utica, Nugent was arrested & was arraigned and is scheduled to appear in court on July 26th. Nugent was then turned over to New Hartford Police regarding another case.

State Police arrested 28 year old Benjamin Truitt of Marathon Tuesday for Grand Larceny. Truitt was arrested after an investigation of a report of a jet ski and trailer stolen in April from outside a residence in Marathon. Truitt allegedly hooked the trailer and jet ski to a vehicle and removed it from the property then putting it in the backyard of a residence on Front Street. The trailer and jet ski were ultimately returned to the owner. Troopers were another call Tuesday when they recognized Truitt, he was taken into custody, processed & was issued an appearance ticket to the town of Marathon Court on July 12th.

Republican Paul Battisti has won the primary in Broome County for the party nomination for District Attorney, over current DA Mike Korchak. Korchak announced that he would not run as a 3rd party candidate like he did tin the previous election 4 years ago & defeated republican Steve Cornwell. Former Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan announced that he will run on the Democratic Party Line for District Attorney in November.

24 year old Spencer Cummings of West Edmeston was arrested by Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputies, for 2nd degree assault, Strangulation, Menacing & Unlawful Imprisonment following an investigation into a domestic dispute in the Town of Norwich. Cummings is accused of assaulting and choking a female victim, he was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment and remanded to the custody of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division on $150,000 cash bail. Cummings is due back in the Town of Norwich Court on a later date.

The Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that 34 year old Kyle Babola of Johnson City pleaded guilty for the killing of 55 year old Scott Grover in Johnson City on New Year’s Eve in 2021. Babola killed Grover by striking him numerous times with a machete during a dispute at 330 Floral Avenue. He will be sentenced to 20 years to life in state prison in April 2023.

The City of Norwich is receiving federal money for the upcoming water Main replacement project downtown, City Community Development Director Eric Scrivener told WCDO News that they will be working with other agencies to do the water main project followed by paving in the effected downtown areas:

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 34-year-old Jessica Arnott of Queens. On January 17th, Deputies were notified that Arnott was at the Delaware County Family Court surrendering herself on an active Delaware County Family Court Arrest Warrant. Deputies arrested and arraigned Arnott on the warrant, she was committed to the Custody of the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending further appearance in court, at a later date.

The State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services’ Office of Counter Terrorism conducted training exercises at more than 1,000 locations statewide in 2022, As part of this process, teams assessed suspicious activity reporting and recognition at 842 retailers and businesses that sell chemicals, compounds, components, services, or rent space or resources that could be exploited by those with nefarious intent. Additionally, teams assessed more than 180 infrastructure locations across the state, including stadiums and arenas, malls and shopping centers, colleges and universities, airports, transit hubs and other mass-gathering locations.

State Department of Health announced that the XBB.1.5. variant is now the most dominant strain in New York, accounting for more than 50 percent of COVID-19 infections statewide, which may indicate that XBB.1.5. is more transmissible than other circulating variants, though there is not yet clear evidence of the severity of strain. The percentage of those testing positive for COVID 19 is down to 6%, with Patient Hospitalization down to 3,029, ICU patients numbers are down to 313 with 124 on ventilators, with 33 deaths reported over the course of the latest 3 day testing period.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is currently looking for Kara Yager on an outstanding warrant and asking the residents of Broome County for assistance. Yager was last known to frequent the Kirby Street area of the Town of Bainbridge, she is described as a white female, 5’4, 115 pounds, with blue eyes, and brown hair, she is wanted for violation of probation for criminal possession of a controlled substance. Otsego County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the report of a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck colliding on I-88 in near Exit 15 Wednesday morning. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, the driver of the pickup truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. State DOT crews, state police and the Oneonta Fire Department also responded to the scene, part of the highway was closed temporarily for the clean up & investigation, the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that 40 year old James Williams of Port Dickinson was sentenced to 5 years in jail for a guilty plea of Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Williams was arrested in 2019 after Johnson City Police executed a search warrant where Williams was found to be illegally in possession of a sawed-off shotgun.

New York State has updated driver’s licenses and state IDs for the first time since 2013. The new look includes enhanced security features & anyone who applied for a new permit, license or non-driver ID card after March 10th will receive the new and improved card. Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin submitted his resignation to Governor Kathy Hochul yesterday, after he was arrested following a Federal Investigation. The U.S. Attorney’s office said Benjamin was charged with bribery, honest services wire fraud and falsification of records. Benjamin was accused in an indictment of participating in a scheme to obtain campaign contributions from a real estate developer in exchange for Benjamin’s agreement to use his influence as a state senator to get a $50,000 grant of state funds for a nonprofit organization the developer controlled. Governor Hochul accepted the resignation.

State Troopers responded Sunday to a domestic incident that involved an attempted break-in at a residence on County Highway 54 in the town of Springfield. 37 year old Kenneth Carson of Springfield attempted to enter the home of a known acquaintance and discharged a firearm while outside, he is also accused of having illegal Ghost Guns. Carson was charged with Attempted Burglary, Criminal Use of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Manufacture of a Machine Gun, Reckless Endangerment & Criminal Mischief. Carson was remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $20,000 cash bail or $45,000 bond.

Binghamton Police & First Responders rescued a woman who jumped into the Susquehanna River shortly after 12:00 Noon Tuesday. Officers tried to persuade the woman not to jump into the River, from the Washington Street Bridge, she did & was successfully pulled out by the Binghamton Fire department rescue boats. The unidentified woman was taken to Lourdes Hospital for treatment.

Andrew Amodeo of Westchester County is facing charges in Otsego County for unlawful surveillance, for allegedly putting a camera in the bathroom of his vacation home in Fly Creek. Amodeo pleaded guilty to 1 count of unlawful surveillance & he is scheduled to be sentenced in March of 2023.

A new state law goes into effect today that will fine motorists with vehicle mufflers and exhaust systems modified to make them louder than the stock applications. The maximum fines for installing the illegal equipment will increase from $150 to $1,000, and if repair shop owners are caught installing the equipment three times within 18 months, they risk losing their certificate of inspection stations and operating certificate. The legislation also adds a requirement for inspection stations to check motorcycles for mufflers and exhausts that have been illegally modified.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that Jordan Rindgen, Yaron Kweller & Leor Kweller were arraigned in Broome County Court. Rindgen was charged with Criminal Sale of a controlled substance, Criminal Possession of a controlled substance, sexual abuse, criminal sexual act, Criminal facilitation & Unlawfully dealing with a child. Yaron Kweller was charged with 1st degree Rape & Criminal Sexual act, Leor Kweller was charged with 1st degree rape & Sexual Abuse. The charges stem for an incident near the Colonial Bar in Downtown Binghamton that the 3 men owned, on November 27th of 2021. All 3 pleaded not guilty to the Charges from the Indictment handed down in Broome County Court.

A judge has ordered New York’s Democrat-controlled Legislature to redraw the state’s congressional and legislative districts after finding they were unconstitutional. Judge Patrick McAllister ruled that maps redrawing the state’s congressional districts were gerrymandered to benefit Democrats, he gave lawmakers until April 11 to draw new maps, if those fail, the judge said he would order the state to pay for a court-approved expert to redraw the maps.

Beginning Today, the State DEC will be adopting changes to fishing regulations, including year-round fishing for Atlantic salmon as well as other lake and pond fish. The Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that Scott Mawhiney of Deposit filed an application in State Supreme Court requesting bail while he appeals his recent conviction in Broome County Court. Mawhiney was found guilty for attempted murder of a police officer & was sentenced to 30 years in prison, for shooting State Trooper Ryan Thorp in June of 2021, after Trooper Thorp responded to the report of a domestic dispute. The motion was argued before New York State Supreme Court Judge, who denied Mawhiney’s request. Mawhiney will remain in prison.

Several Fire Departments responded to the report of a fire at the Town of Windsor barn Thursday afternoon. The investigation revealed that the fire started in the bay area of a garage, with fire damage to the entire garage itself with most of the damage occurring in the bay area. Windsor, West Windsor, Harpursville, West Colesville, 5 Mile Point, Deposit fire departments responded, no injuries were reported.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office announced Modified visitation procedures for inmate visitation beginning on Saturday, March 12th. Visitors are encouraged to make an appointment for visitation by calling 607-337-1967, Monday through Friday during normal lobby hours. Sidney Police Department responded to a domestic dispute Tuesday, police arrested 38 year old Roberto Rincon of Sidney for Criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, Rincon was arraigned in Village of Sidney Court where he was released on his own recognizance to appear back in court at a later date.

Late Wednesday Night into early Thursday Morning, State Troopers and members from the State DOT assisted with the closure of State Route 17 west between exits 67 and 66 to remove a large piece of machinery. Back on February 25th, a tractor trailer, which was not permitted properly, was pulling a large piece of machinery when it suffered a mechanical failure during transport. The weight of the machinery was too heavy to move and a crane from Rogers Industrial & Crane Specialists was brought in to move the load off the first trailer and onto another properly permitted trailer.

The State Health department & the Governor’s Office reported that COVID 19 numbers continue to decrease. Statewide on Wednesday over 191,000 testes were conducted with 9418 testing positive, for a positivity rate of 4.9%. Patient Hospitalizations were down by 450 to 6,177, the number in an ICU Bed was down by almost 100 to 995, with 563 on Ventilators, a decrease of 78. there were 114 deaths from COVID in hospital & Nursing homes Wednesday.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced today that Larry Harris received a 79 years to Life sentence this morning in Broome County Court. Harris was found guilty of killing 11 year old Jerome Smith in 2019, raping an 11 year old female in 2013 and dealing narcotics.

State Police at Binghamton and multiple fire agencies responded to a house fire Thursday on Old State Road in the town of Kirkwood. Once the fire was extinguished by fire crews, Broome County Fire Investigators, State Fire Investigators, State Police BCI and State Police Forensic Identification Unit located 2 deceased individuals. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters responded to a structure fire reported at the former Carpet Master building on State Route 12 in North Norwich early this morning. The fire was reported at about 3:05 AM, the fire did not affect a building located in front of the former flooring store building. North Norwich Fire Fighters were assisted by 3 other area companies, no injuries were reported & the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Chobani announced an expansion of its Scholars Program, adding a pledge of $1 million for those who wish to pursue agriculture. Through its partnerships with Cornell University and the University of Idaho, the Chobani Scholars Program will offer eight $20,000 scholarships ($5,000 each year) over 5 years to historically underserved students interested in studying agriculture, dairy, food science, and/or food entrepreneurship. Endicott Police arrested 31 year old Dominique Wortham of Endicott for attempted Murder, following an investigation into shots being fired in front of 140 Washington Avenue on December 14th.
