Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond was recently elected President of the New York State Sheriff’s Association, he told WCDO News that it is a humbling experience:

Sheriff DuMond said that Governor Hochul was at the ceremony last week and she was promising to be tougher on crime in 2024, and he hoped that the new position will give him a seat at the table when discussing future legislation.

Former Davenport Town Judge Candidate George Sydlar was convicted by a jury in the Town of Kortright, for Falsely Reporting an Incident to 911. Sydlar was charged after he called 911 last July 6, after he reported that his neighbor committed a crime, despite knowing that his neighbor had not committed a crime. Further allegations were that Sydlar engaged in this behavior on approximately two dozen occasions, after being told by the police that any dispute he had with his neighbor was civil and not criminal. The trial was moved to Town of Kortright court as the Davenport judge recused himself as Sydlar was running for his position. Sentencing will be in March, Sydlar could face up to a year in jail.

The State Department of Labor released preliminary local area unemployment rates for December. The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 4.3% in November to 4.5% in December, Locally, Chenango County had 4.2%, Delaware County 4.7% & Otsego County also had 4.7% unemployment.

The Chenango County Historical Society recently announced grant awards totaling $49,500 from the State Council on the Arts to support the recovery of the nonprofit arts and culture sector. The State Council has awarded more than $80 million since spring 2023 to more than 1,500 artists and organizations. The numbers are in for the Laurens Central School Coaches vs Cancer Basketball event this past Saturday, where they were able to raise $5,467 for the American Cancer Society through a Zumbathon, basket raffles and admission donations. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31 year old Thomas Harris of Masonville for making a Terroristic Threat. On January 10th, Deputies received a complaint that an individual had made threats of arson towards a local business, it was determined that Harris did make the threat to “burn down” the business’s headquarters on a recorded line while talking to the business’s after-hours dispatch center. Harris was charged with Aggravated Harassment and Making a Terroristic Threat, he was transported to and held at the Delaware County Correctional Facility to await centralized arraignment.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 22 year old Devon Kupris of Davenport after Deputies responded Saturday to a motor vehicle accident on State Highway 23 in Davenport, Kupris’s driving privileges were revoked for 3 speeding violations or misdemeanors in 18 months. Kupris was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle while Intoxicated, Aggravated DWI .18% or higher, Aggravated Unlicensed Operator & Leaving the Scene of a Property Damaged Accident, he was released on appearance tickets returnable at an later date to the Town of Kortright Court.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand visited Binghamton to announce her Healthy Food Financing Initiative Re-authorization Act, legislation that would help end food deserts, which are areas where residents don’t have easy access to a full service grocery store with affordable, nutritious food, & they are forced to rely on small convenience stores, which sell little to no fresh produce, meat or dairy and whose prices are higher than those of a typical supermarket. Gillibrand’s legislation would provide $50 million annually in mandatory federal funding for the USDA program that offers loans and grants to incentivize grocery stores to establish locations in under-served communities.

39 year old Orlando Torres of Binghamton was found guilty by a Broome County Jury for 2 counts of criminal possession of a Controlled Substance & 1 count of criminal possession of drug paraphernalia. The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force executed a search warrant on a Binghamton apartment, Officer seized 20 grams of fentanyl, Cash from drug sales and a digital scale. Torres faces up to 12 years in state prison when sentenced next month.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s office arrested 24 year old Kristen Knapp of Cooperstown following an investigation of a motor vehicle accident on September 23rd. Knapp was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated DWI, Speed not reasonable and prudent, along with other charges following an accident at County Highway 33 and County Highway 11C in the Town of Middlefield. Knapp will appear in Town of Middlefield Court at a later date.

31 year old Derek Wignall of Hancock was sentenced to a 5 year period of probation supervision for the crime of Criminal Contempt in the First Degree. On May 31st, Wignall violated an Order of Protection by contacting the protected party while incarcerated on an unrelated matter, Wignall was placed back into custody following the violation of the Order of Protection. Wignall pleaded guilty to the charge he was sentenced to a five-year period of probation supervision and 180 days of Electronic Monitoring both to be supervised by the Delaware County Probation Department.

Norwich City School District Superintendent Scott Ryan announced that This morning at 10:13 am, the lock-down system was activated the Middle School and High School campus. This activation was not planned. Our safety team followed all of the procedures and protocols. Each building on the MS/HS campus has been declared safe and free of threat by the Norwich Police Department and our safety team. At 11:30 a.m. the campus was restored to full activity.

31 year old Thomas Harris of Unadilla was sentenced to a 5-year term of probation supervision for 4th degree Arson in Delaware County Court. On June 4th, 2022, State Police responded to reports of a structure fire in the Town of Sidney, Troopers discovered beer bottles, some with gasoline, the victim told Troopers that Harris threw the bottles, starting the fire. Investigators obtained DNA Swabs from Harris, Harris’s DNA was on the bottles, he was arrested & Harris pled guilty to Arson. Harris was directed to immediately report to the Delaware County Department of Probation.

The Survey Team at the National Weather Service in Binghamton confirmed that there was an EF2 tornado in Sullivan County Saturday evening, with estimated maximum wind speed of 115 mph, it had a path of nearly 10 miles and a maximum width of 300 yards. A tornado touched down north of Jeffersonville, along Callicoon Center Road, damaging trees, it moved north, where with damage to trees & structures, including a 180 foot truss tower that collapsed, The tornado continued north to the Roscoe area with uprooted trees, & some damage to structures along Dutch Hill Road, it lifted as it approached Rockland. Delaware County Sheriff’s office arrested 61 year old Fredrick Hallstead of McDonough for Criminal Mischief and Harassment. Deputies responded on March 12th, in the Town of Walton for a Domestic Incident in progress, where Hallstead is accused of making physical contact with a female victim, in an effort to prevent her from calling 911. Deputies subsequently located Hallstead recently and issued a summons to appear at Town of Walton Court at a later date.

Delsa McEwan, the mother of Anielle “AK” McEwan Lomnicki, has filed a lawsuit In Delaware County Supreme Court, against a number of people in relation to the February 15th incident where the 14 year old was run down by a car allegedly driven by Courtni Baker in Sidney. The lawsuit is filed against Baker, Baker’s mother Theresa Baker who owned the vehicle, plus Ermeti’s Community Lounge, owner Joe Ermeti and bar manager Laura Huntley. The Lawsuit claims that Community Lounge Staff should have stopped serving Courtni Baker that day, That Theresa Baker should not have allowed her daughter to operate the car while intoxicated, and against Baker for driving the vehicle into the Sidney Teenager. The case was filed on April 18th.

Delaware County Sheriff’s office arrested 31 year old Kyle Oakley of South Kortright for Criminal Mischief & Burglary. Deputies were dispatched to a Burglary Report in the Town of Stamford, between the dates of February 23rd and March 8th, someone had forced entry into a residence and intentionally damaged property, Deputies recovered evidence which was sent to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis, Deputies later received a positive DNA match with Oakley, an arrest warrant was issued & Oakley was located & was taken into custody last week, Oakley was arraigned in the Town of Middletown Court where he was remanded to the Delaware County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash or $10,000 in secured bond.

The Delaware County Department of Public Works will be closing County Route 16 in the Town of Delhi to through traffic beginning at 7:00 This morning to replace a culvert pipe between the two intersections with Fleming Road. On Wednesday, the road will be closed in the Town of Franklin between the northern intersection with Fleming Road and Douglas Hall Road. The traveling public should seek alternate routes.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection, Friends of the Upper Delaware River, and the Upper Delaware River Tailwaters Coalition will hold a public information meeting to discuss the 2023 Delaware Aqueduct shutdown. DEP officials will be discussing the details of the upcoming shutdown and repair project and how it will impact the management of the Delaware River basin reservoirs and the Upper Delaware River. The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that 39 year old Richard Lance of Kirkwood, was sentenced to 1 to 3 years in State prison after entering a plea of guilty to Failure to Comply with the New York State Sex Offender Registration Act. During August of 2022, Lance reported to law enforcement that he was residing at an address in the Village of Johnson City, while he was actually residing at the Dell Motel on Upper Court Street. Lance was convicted of a 3rd degree Rape in 2008 in Broome County.

Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced that 24 year old Patrick Combs of Grand Gorge pleaded guilty to Grand Larceny and Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, in Delaware County Court. Combs stole over $3,000.00 from the Roxbury Country Store, also, on January 15th, he operated a motor vehicle on State Highway 30, while impaired by drugs. Combs will be sentenced to 1-3 years in state prison for his conviction of Grand Larceny & 364 days in jail for driving while his ability was impaired by drugs, the sentences will run concurrently.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 35 year old Rex Jordan for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, DWI, Unlawful Fleeing in a Motor Vehicle, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation & Numerous other Vehicle and Traffic violations. An Otsego County Sheriff’s deputy and State Parks Police officer observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on State Highway 205, Jordan failed to comply and became involved in a 1 car motor vehicle accident, he was taken to Bassett Hospital. Police discovered that the vehicle had been reported stolen out Oneonta. Jordan was discharged from Bassett before charges were filed, A warrant was issued & he was located by the Oneonta City Police Department who arrested him on unrelated charges. Jordan was processed and lodged in the Otsego County Correctional Facility, Additional charges are pending.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 34 year old Emario Lynch of the Bronx in the town of Morris for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia. Deputies observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. Deputies stopped the vehicle a short time later and found it to have switched plates and no insurance, Lynch was also found to possess crack cocaine and MDMA. Lynch was released on an appearance ticket & is set to appear in the Town of Morris Court at a later date.

A.O. Fox Hospital and Bassett Healthcare Network announced that FoxCare Fitness in Oneonta will be closing permanently as of June 1 for Gym memberships, Spokesperson Gabby Argo told WCDO News that the pandemic made things harder for the facility to remain open as a Gym:

Walton Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire Monday at 34 Mead Street in the Village of Walton. A Walton Assistant Chief who was passing by and notified 911, of smoke showing & a woman on the 2nd floor attempting to escape, the assistant chief was able to assist her in exiting the home. Mutual aid was promptly dispatched from Trout Creek and Delhi Fire Departments & the FAST team from Franklin. 1 firefighters was injured inside & was safely removed, he was transported to DVH where he was further evaluated, treated and later released. The fire was under control in about 90 minutes, The 2nd and 3rd floors were deemed a total loss. The first floor suffered extensive heat, smoke and water damage

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a disabled vehicle on State Highway 28 in the Town of Franklin, 23 year old Devon Finch of Andes, had been operating a motor vehicle in an intoxicated state, Deputies arrested and charged Finch with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Finch was released on an appearance ticket and directed to appear at the Town of Franklin Town Court at a later date.

The City of Oneonta announced that a safety concern on the exit ramp in the City’s Parking Garage located on Market Street, The ramp was immediately closed Monday and a structural engineer brought in , who advised that repairs to the ramp are required before it can be safely re-opened to vehicular traffic. The top level of the parking garage and the exit ramp will remain closed until those repairs can be made. Also, City officials announced that their contractor, R.B. It’s been 2 weeks since Anielle “AK” McEwan Lomnicki was hit by a car while walking home from from school in Sidney, an area fundraiser for medical expenses incurred by the family, while AK remains in a Syracuse Hospital, was conducted this past weekend, spokesperson Kim Ayres told WCDO News how much was raised:

Ayres said that the effort was spearheaded by Mike Gavin, his businesses, Gavin’s Pizza, Machos Tacos & Tina’s Old Fashioned Donuts, with Sidney Joe’s Pizza, Club 55, Trackside Dining, Beez Kneez, Roasted Coffee House and Houndstooth also participated, more fundraisers are being planned and all legitimate fundraising efforts will be posted on the “AK Strong” Facebook page. Meanwhile, AK continues to be in a medically induced coma but has been slow but stead improvement, according to her father, Rich Lomnicki.

The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced that 26 year old Brandin VanTassel of Walton, New York pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court to Criminal Contempt, for intentionally violating an order of protection, by contacting the protected party by sending multiple text messages. VanTassel will be sentenced to serve 6 months in the Delaware County Correctional Facility, followed by 5 years of probation supervision. Sentencing is scheduled for March 27, at 9:00 A.M.

Hospital and network leadership reached the decision following an extended period of declining membership and operational challenges, many of which are directly related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The deceased has been identified as 66 year old William Sethmann of Deposit, who was working as an independent contractor and handyman at Courier; he was located crushed underneath a hydraulic loading dock. The investigation revealed that Sethmann was working on the lift when it failed sometime between Monday afternoon and Wednesday morning. There are no signs of foul play.

19-year-old Alexander Wetzel was reported missing Tuesday, the SUNY Broome student was found by Binghamton Police Wednesday, SUNY Broome officials announced their condolences to Wetzel’s family on their website today. State Police arrested 37 year old Gary Sullivan Jr. of Hancock for DWI, after a trooper was dispatched to a 1 car accident on State Route 17 in Kirkwood. The trooper located Sullivan’s vehicle on its side and Sullivan had with minor injuries. Sullivan was arrested & was released on appearance tickets to town of Kirkwood Court on October 16th.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Department investigated a robbery Tuesday Night on Royal Avenue in the Town of Norwich, after a male victim went to Chenango Memorial Hospital with missing teeth, head lacerations and additional trauma. The investigation revealed that the victim was lured to the Royal Avenue address by 19 year old Jade Orlando, who requested marihuana to be delivered to her, Brenden Gager, Hunter Speenburgh and Landon Cummings were hiding nearby, they allegedly assaulted and robbed the victim. All 4 were arrested & were charged with Robbery & Assault; they were arraigned and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility. The City of Norwich Police Department assisted with the investigation. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are expected.

Two men were arrested and 100 pounds of marijuana were seized after the Otsego County Sheriff’s Department raided elaborate growing operations in Morris and New Lisbon. 47 year old Christian Balmaceda of Morris and 49 year old Joseph Ali of New Lisbon were arrested, Balmaceda was charged with Criminal Possession of Marijuana, Unlawful Growing of Cannabis, and 3 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Ali was charged with Criminal Possession of Marijuana, Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Unlawfully Growing of Cannabis, they were remanded to the Otsego County Jail pending future court action.

State Police have arrested a 67-year-old Douglas Slater following a stabbing in the town of Conklin Sunday night. State Police responded to 663 Conklin Road to the report of a vicitm with a stab wound, and the fleeing of the suspect by car. Slater was spotted in a vehicle by Binghamton Police, he was charged with 1st Degree Assault & was remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail, the victim was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City where he underwent surgery.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 31 year old Eduardo Torres Jr. of Walton for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle, following a traffic stop on State Highway 10 in the Town of Hamden. Deputies allege that Torres’s vehicle was stopped on a dangerous turn on State Highway 10, impeding traffic, and that he had his license suspended.
