Governor Cuomo announced New York State is moving to join a lawsuit against the federal government for failing to enforce the Fair Housing Act. The lawsuit aims to force the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to enforce a rule requiring local and state governments to address segregated housing patterns as a condition of receiving federal housing funding. New York is the first state in the nation to move to join in the national lawsuit filed by a group of fair housing advocates which seeks to reverse HUD’s suspension of the implementation of the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and the Delhi Emergency Squad responded Saturday to 2 ATV accidents in the Town of Hamden. 30 year old Michael Armstrong of Roxbury lost control of the ATV on a curve, struck a tree and sustained head injuries, his passenger, 28 year old Laura Armstrong was ejected, Both subjects were taken to O’Connor Hospital, Michael Armstrong was transferred to Bassett Hospital, where he is in critical condition. Laura Armstrong was treated and released. A 2nd ATV accident occurred when 27 year old Corey Hochbrueckner of Oneonta, struck Armstrong’s ATV; Hochbrueckner & 33 year old Ashley Joslin of Hamden, were injured. The investigation is continuing & alcohol was a contributing factor, charges are anticipated.

State Senator Jim Seward announced senate passage of legislation he sponsors to combat auto insurance fraud, by targeting criminals who stage auto accidents in attempts to profit from insurance claims. “Alice’s Law” was prompted by the 2003 death of Alice Ross, who was killed as a result of a staged auto accident. This bill would establish tough penalties by creating a new crime of staging a motor vehicle accident. The bills have been sent to the assembly for consideration.
