Broome County District Attorney Steven Cornwell announced that a Grand Jury indicted Michael Roque for 2nd degree murder of Binghamton University student Joao Souza. Souza was found dead on April 15th at Binghamton University, Roque will be arraigned on the indictment shortly.

A Broome County grand jury indicted 23 year old Travon Sanders of Brooklyn in the Easter shooting in front of the Yellow Deli on Susquehanna street in Binghamton, according to the Broome County DA’s Office. Sanders is accused of firing several rounds from a handgun directly into a car on April 1, shooting 40 year old Grady Hunter of Binghamton. Sanders was charged with Attempted murder, 1st degree Assault, & Criminal possession of a weapon.

State Senator Fred Akshar Announced that he will NOT be the running mate of Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Marcus Molinaro this year. Akshar was reportedly one of possible candidates considered by Molinaro, Akshar is expected to run for his seat in the State Senate again in November.

The Oneonta Common Council will hold their next meeting this evening at 7:00 PM at City Hall. The Council is expected to approve the resolution for the Oneonta Rail Yards final scope of the Environemtnal Impact statement from Delaware Engineering.

Members of the 4 largest fire service organizations in New York State descended on the Capitol today for their annual “Government Affairs Day,” meeting with their elected representatives to discuss the Issues of Concern. The main priority for New York’s fire service in 2018 is a bill that would allow fire departments to recover the costs of providing ambulance services.

The General Clinton Canoe Regatta Music festival moves into its 9th year with a new sponsor, Michelob Ultra and the United Way of Delaware Otsego Counties. It is being held in the Michelob Ultra Tent at the General Clinton Canoe Regatta in Bainbridge, NY on Sunday, May 27, 2018 from 1 PM -11 PM.

Governor Cuomo announced New York State is moving to join a lawsuit against the federal government for failing to enforce the Fair Housing Act. The lawsuit aims to force the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to enforce a rule requiring local and state governments to address segregated housing patterns as a condition of receiving federal housing funding. New York is the first state in the nation to move to join in the national lawsuit filed by a group of fair housing advocates which seeks to reverse HUD’s suspension of the implementation of the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and the Delhi Emergency Squad responded Saturday to 2 ATV accidents in the Town of Hamden. 30 year old Michael Armstrong of Roxbury lost control of the ATV on a curve, struck a tree and sustained head injuries, his passenger, 28 year old Laura Armstrong was ejected, Both subjects were taken to O’Connor Hospital, Michael Armstrong was transferred to Bassett Hospital, where he is in critical condition. Laura Armstrong was treated and released. A 2nd ATV accident occurred when 27 year old Corey Hochbrueckner of Oneonta, struck Armstrong’s ATV; Hochbrueckner & 33 year old Ashley Joslin of Hamden, were injured. The investigation is continuing & alcohol was a contributing factor, charges are anticipated.

State Senator Jim Seward announced senate passage of legislation he sponsors to combat auto insurance fraud, by targeting criminals who stage auto accidents in attempts to profit from insurance claims. “Alice’s Law” was prompted by the 2003 death of Alice Ross, who was killed as a result of a staged auto accident. This bill would establish tough penalties by creating a new crime of staging a motor vehicle accident. The bills have been sent to the assembly for consideration.
