The United States Attorney’s Office announced that 33 year old Dupray Jordan of Binghamton entered a guilty plea in US District Court for possessing fentanyl and methamphetamine with the intent to sell, possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking, and possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon, in connection with a warrant executed in November of 2021. Jordan faces up to 20 years in prison, a series of fines, when he is sentenced on May 8, 2024 in Syracuse.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 23-year-old Leroy Williams for unlawful dissemination or publication of an intimate image, a warrant has been issued for Williams’ arrest in the revenge porn case.

The State Court of Appeals ordered new Congressional maps be drawn for the 2024 election, the redistricting decision will ensure that all , district lines should be drawn by the Independent Redistricting Commission, and not by state lawmakers.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were contacted by members of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office December 19th, that they had 59-year-old Eva Witteman in custody. Delaware County Deputies took Witteman into custody and transported her to the Delaware County Correctional Facility where she was arraigned & held without bail, an indictment was unsealed & she is accused of possessing methamphetamine following an investigation of an abandoned vehicle in February, she was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, she was was released on her own recognizance and directed to appear in court at a later date for these charges.

State Police reported the arrest of 178 individuals for impaired driving during the Thanksgiving holiday enforcement period. Which resulted in 12,171 tickets issued statewide. State Police reported 765 crashes during this period, with no fatalities. A breakdown of the tickets issued shows that 4,349 were for speeding, 362 for distracted driving, 1,162 for seatbelt violations, and 137 for violations of the Move Over Law.

A federally housed inmate at the Broome County Correctional Facility is facing 17 felony charges after investigators found fentanyl, PCP and other contraband hidden in his cell. On October 24th, the Corrections Criminal Investigations Unit conducted cell searches, 41 year old Freddie Brown of Baldwinsville was charged with multiple Counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, 11 Counts of Promoting Prison Contraband, Officers seized fentanyl, PCP, synthetic cannabis, & tobacco, Brown was arraigned for the charges in the Town of Dickinson Court earlier this month.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 46 year old Joseph Ogborn of Otego for possessing social media accounts not listed on the sex offender registry. Ogborn is a level 3 sex offender, he was charged with 2 counts of Sex Offender Failure to Register, he was located today by investigators and parole officers and taken in to custody, bail was recommended by the Otsego County District Attorney’s Office at $5,000 cash, $5,000 credit card and $50,000 bond.

Chenango Memorial Hospital is closing the long-term care unit located on the hospital’s second floor as of January 31st. CMH will no longer be accepting new residents and, over the next 2 months, they will work closely with our residents and their families to ensure their placement in other long-term care facilities. 19 residents are currently at the facility, and employees of the facility will be transferred to other positions across the Hospital’s departments. The hospital’s board and leadership team are currently exploring options for alternative uses for the second floor of the hospital.

Attorney General Letitia James today announced the takedown of a major drug trafficking ring that was distributing heroin and fentanyl, as well as powder and crack cocaine in Rensselaer, Albany, Saratoga, Schenectady, and Dutchess counties. The takedown resulted in the indictment of 25 individuals charged with 164 crimes and recovered cocaine, heroin laced with fentanyl, which have a street value of approximately $350,000 plus 4 handguns, 2 large capacity ammunition feeding devices, and the seizure of over $50,000 in cash.

A Lawsuit was filed in Broome County Supreme Court against the Vestal School District where a former Vestal High School student alleges that economics teacher Robert Carr asked her to meet him, he allegedly kissed the victim numerous times, groped her inappropriately and continued to force sexual activity upon her until she moved to the state of Texas and changed her phone number. The lawsuit claims that School Officials did not take any action against Carr after learning of the accusations.

On Tuesday, Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies assigned to the US Marshal’s Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 22 year old Nathan Williams Jr. of Endicott, at 68 Thorp Street in the City of Binghamton. Williams was wanted by the Endicott Police Department for Murder in connection with the shooting death of 25-year-old Molique Dawson in Endicott in July. The Metro SWAT Team of the Binghamton Police Department executed the search warrant and Williams was successfully taken into custody after a 5 hour standoff, Williams was transported to the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility, arraigned at Central Arraignment and is currently being held without bail.

State police reported that 82 year old Lorena Mayes of Norwich was killed from a 2-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon in the town of North Norwich. Police reported that Mayes was operating her vehicle at County Highway 32 and State Highway 12, she pulled out into the path of an SUV traveling north on Route 12. Mayes was transported to Chenango Hospital, but did not survive. A 91-year-old passenger in the Mayes vehicle was taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both occupants of the SUV were taken to Basset Hospital in Cooperstown with non-life-threatening injuries.

The State Department of Labor announced that the number of private sector jobs in New York State increased over the month by 4,900, to 8,252,700 in August. The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held constant at 3.9% in August, New York’s labor force participation rate increased to 61.5% in August, highest level since 2013.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Monday to a 911 call of a pedestrian-train accident in the Town of Union. The pedestrian, 33 year old Joey Rosa of Endwell was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives found that Rosa had been known to frequent the area and was on the tracks as the train approached. The conductor of the train attempted to signal multiple times to get Rosa’s attention, but Rosa did not move off the tracks. The engineer was unable to stop the train, and at Rosa was struck and killed. Investigators have ruled the incident an accident.

The State Department of Labor released the results of its 2023 Workforce Development Survey, and workers continue to say that flexibility in their job is the number one priority, while attracting new employees and retaining current workers remain the top challenges for businesses. Ibrahim was named Bassett Healthcare Network’s President and Chief Executive Officer on July 13, 2020, after a nationwide search. State Police arrested 28 year old Tyler Burr of Oneonta after he refused to exit his residence for over 23-hours. Troopers went to a home on Emmons Hill Road in the town of Oneonta Saturday night to interview Burr, for his involvement in a theft from Price Chopper on June 20th, Burr aimed a bow and arrow at the troopers then shot in the direction of the troopers. Burr eventually attempted to flee from the residence Sunday evening and was taken into custody. Burr was charged with 4 counts of Menacing a Police Officer, 3 counts of Criminal Mischief, & 3rd degree Burglary, he was processed & transported to the Otsego County Jail to await arraignment. More charges are possible.

Former Prattsville Town Supervisor Kory O’Hara plead guilty to wire fraud in connection with a grant extended to Prattsville in the wake of Hurricane Irene. As Town Supervisor, O’Hara entered into various grant agreements, O’Hara admitted that he obtained false invoices from Moore’s Homes, purporting to reflect construction work performed on O’Hara’s Service Station, which Moore’s Homes did not perform. O’Hara faces up to 20 years in prison; plus post-imprisonment supervised release of up to 3 years; and a maximum fine of $250,000. He will also be required to pay $24,915 in restitution to the State of New York.

The State Police BCI Unit seized methamphetamine, illegal firearms and weapons from a home in the town of Union earlier this week. On Sunday, Troopers were dispatched to an argument with “shots fired” on Spring Street. 20 year old Carson Vanco of Endicott, was in possession of an assault rifle, a disguised homemade gun, brass knuckles, plus methamphetamine and components to make methamphetamine. Vanco was charged with 4 counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, manufacturing Methamphetamine, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Broome County Jail without bail.

NYSEG will be raising electric & natural gas rates starting this Sunday, after a rate increase request was approved by the Public Service Commission, who authorized the 3-year rate hike plan in November 2020. State Police responded to a Mercy Flight Helicopter crash in the town of Elba in Genesee County Tuesday afternoon at around 1:00 PM. Mercy Flight Bell 429 helicopter was on a training mission during the time of the collision. Mercy Flight pilot, 60 year old James Sauer of Churchville 60 year old Stewart Dietrick of Prosper, Texas were pronounced deceased at the scene. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will be assisting in this investigation. The investigation is continuing into the cause of the accident.

The Sidney Police Department arrested 37 year old Jamie Benham following several ongoing criminal investigations in the Village of Sidney. Benham was located on an active arrest warrant and charged with 2nd degree Burglary, plus Conspiracy, Criminal Mischief, Petty Larceny & Criminal trespass, following a larceny investigation, separate from the arrest warrant investigation, Benham was arraigned in Village of Sidney Court where she was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.

Chenango County Public Health released their latest COVID 19 statistics today; they report 95 active cases, with 24 cases vaccinated. They have 181 people in quarantine, 7 are hospitalized, 1 is vaccinated, Chenango County has had 3985 cases with 82 deaths & 3724 recoveries since the pandemic began.

The Gilbertsville Mount Upton School District held their Open House & opened up their new Bassett Healthcare Network Health Center & on-campus apparel store Last Night. Among those in attendance were retired State Senator Jim Seward, Current State Senator Peter Oberacker, & Bassett Healthcare Network President and CEO Dr. Tommy Ibrahim. The GMU School district returns for classes on Thursday.

State Police in Troop C announced that they removed 40 impaired drivers from local roadways in the month of August. Troop C encompasses Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Tioga and Tompkins Counties.

Former area Congressional candidate and army veteran Kyle Van De Water has been found dead by Poughkeepsie police, the 41-year-old was found in a Poughkeepsie Cemetery. Van De Water lost to Congressman Antonio Delgado in the 2020 election in the 19th Congressional District last year, the investigation is ongoing.

The 5 students are alleged to have served as hosts of large off-campus parties & Chancellor Malatras said that at those gatherings there were several students who were symptomatic of COVID 19 & upon testing, there were 20 positive cases diagnosed. Chancellor Malatras announced that they have decided to Suspend In-Person Instruction at SUNY Oneonta for 2 Weeks. SUNY Oneonta Officials said that law enforcement officials on campus and in the City of Oneonta are working together to confront situations that compromise the students & city residents safety.

Governor Cuomo announced that he has is deploying a SWAT team to SUNY ONEONTA to contain their COVID-19 Cluster. The state team is sending 71 Contact Tracers and 8 Case Investigators to Oneonta & the State Will Open 3 Free Rapid Testing Sites in Oneonta with Results in 15 Minutes, the site Locations are being set up today & the sites will also be open to all city residents by appointment.

Hartwick College determined Sunday that 1 student has tested positive for COVID-19, the first confirmed case of COVID-19 on the Hartwick campus. The student is isolating at home. The Department of Health is responsible for contact tracing and will notify individuals with whom the student may have had contact. Hartwick College officials announced that no one is allowed on the College Private Property except enrolled students, delivery people & Hartwick Employees. Remote learners are not permitted to enter the campus.

Otsego County Department of Health continues to investigate a large outbreak at SUNY Oneonta, on Sunday, 38 lab confirmed cases were reported in SUNY students. Currently there is 94 lab confirmed cases and 34 suspect cases in SUNY Oneonta students and 6 cases in high school students. Anyone who suspects they may have been in contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus should quarantine at home & contact the local health department. Currently, Otsego County has 219 total confirmed cases, 103 are active, & no one is hospitalized

Bassett Hospital President & CEO Dr. Tommy Ibrahim has announced his first appointments to a new network leadership team, who will work in various capacities to propel the network toward full integration and position Bassett as a national player in health care delivery. Jeff Joyner has been appointed as Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, he has served as president of A.O. Fox Hospital since 2015, he will serve as the responsible executive for network hospital operations, system support services, and all integration efforts & he will still continue to have oversight of the A.O. Fox Hospital campuses with his new position, in addition to all other network hospitals.

Governor Cuomo and New York labor leaders today called on Congress to provide $59 billion to address catastrophic budget shortfalls that impact the jobs and livelihoods of thousands of workers in the state. The governor and labor leaders sent a letter to federal representatives enumerating the critical infrastructure projects that would be impacted without federal funding and the hospitals, schools and institutions that would be supported by it. The governor and labor leaders also called on Congress to repeal the tax change that eliminated the State and Local Tax Deduction, also known as “SALT”.

Congressman Anthony Brindisi pushed a plan today to double the federal funding for the Department of Justice, the Community Oriented Policing Services or “COPS” Program to recruit, hire, train and fund more community beat cops on the streets. The plan is a national effort. In 2020, the program awarded 596 grants to hire 2,731 police officers at police departments across the nation, according to Justice Department statistics. Brinidisi said that the City of Binghamton just received $250,000 of COPS funds in June.

Governor Cuomo announced that COVID-19 Sunday Hospitalizations Dropped to 418, the number of ICU patients dropped to 109, 51 patients were on ventilators & there was 1 death associated with the COVID virus in New York State Sunday, the state death toll is 25,328. There were 656 positive COVID 19 tests Sunday, bringing the Statewide Total to 434,756.

The newly-added states are Minnesota, New Mexico, Ohio and Wisconsin, the state of Delaware has been removed. The quarantine applies to any person arriving from a state with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents over a 7-day rolling average or a state with a 10% or higher positivity rate over a 7-day rolling average. A travel enforcement operation begins today at airports across the state to help ensure travelers are following the state’s quarantine restrictions and to help contain the rates of COVID-19 transmission in New York State, failure to adhere could result in fines up to $2000.

The State Health department announced that there were 5 deaths in New York State from the Coronavirus, 2 of those were in Broome County, the state death toll is 24, 994.  Hospitalizations increased by 28 to 820 statewide, the number of people on ventilators was 101, there were 912 positive tests in the state Monday, bringing the statewide total to 403,175 confirmed cases since March.

Delaware County Sheriff Deputies arrested a Walton man upon the conclusion of their investigation of an early morning domestic dispute.  Deputies arrested 30-year-old Victor Matonis of Walton for unlawful imprisonment and harassment, he is accused of physically grabbing, restraining and attempting to prevent the victim from fleeing from the residence.  Matonis was arraigned in the Town of Walton Court and was released on recognizance pending his reappearance in the Town of Walton Court on a later date.

On Monday July 20th, 2020, the Chenango County Department of Public Works shall close County Road 9, between Page Road and Gardner Road in the Town of Greene, for the replacement of large twin culvert crossing under County Road 9.  This closure shall be in place from the stated date of closure until the twin culvert replacement project on County Road 9 is complete.  There shall be NO ON-SITE DETOUR. The traveling public is asked to seek alternative routes. Local traffic shall be allowed access to their homes, on each side of project.

State Police at Norwich responded to a fatal motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian near Fred’s Inn on State Highway 12 in Norwich, shortly before 10:00 PM last night.  The pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene, an autopsy was ordered.  The operator of the vehicle is being cooperative with New York State Police Investigators. The investigation is on-going, more will be released when available.

Governor Cuomo announced the start of “Operation Hardhat,” a statewide traffic enforcement detail targeting motorists who drive recklessly through work zones. The operation is a joint initiative between the New York State Police, Department of Transportation and Thruway Authority, State Troopers will patrol active highway work zones throughout the summer, Troopers will be present within the work zones, dressed as highway maintenance workers, to identify motorists who disobey flagging personnel, speed through the work zone or violate the state’s Move Over Law.

Delaware County received a report of one new case of COVID-19 and no additional recoveries over the past weekend.  The known active case in the County is now 1. To date there have been 83 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19, with 30 people under quarantine, 1 person is isolated, 6 people have died and 76 have fully recovered.
