Broome County Sheriff’s Office is attempting to locate a white male regarding a larceny that occurred Monday at the Price Chopper at 33 Chenango Bridge Road in the Town of Chenango. The subject is believed to be in his early to mid-thirties, approximately 5’8”, wearing a blue Adidas sweatshirt, black pants, a camouflage face mask & red shoes. Delhi Telephone, or DTC, continues to expand their Fiber Optic internet & cable services around the county, they have completed the infrastructure in several locations, & they are currently wrapping up work in Walton, Spokesman Jason Miller told WCDO News where they go next:

The State Department of Labor announced that its Division of Worker Protection investigators have recovered and returned over $11.7 million in stolen wages to 12,000 affected workers since January 1, putting the Department on track to recover $20 million in stolen wages this year. Over the past decade, they have recovered and dispersed more than $360 million in stolen wages, identified over a million misclassified workers, and assessed over $400 million owed in unemployment insurance contributions through both criminal cases and civil enforcement.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 52 year old Michael Garramone of Remsen, following an investigation of a trailer reported stolen from a North Norwich business July 14th. Investigators learned that 2 male suspects entered the business parking lot operating a Chevy Silverado which was used to steal the trailer, and Detectives were able to track the truck and stolen trailer into Oneida County with the help of a video security systems, pictures were released to the Sheriff’s Social media pages, leading to the arrest. Garramone was located on July 28, he was charged with Grand Larceny and Conspiracy he was processed & was released pending court action in Town of North Norwich Court, additional arrests are expected shortly.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Detectives Division arrested 40 year old Todd Jorgensen for Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, 2 counts of Criminal Sale of firearms and false written statement. The arrest came following an investigation of a Burglary of firearms in the Town of Columbus in December 2022. Jorgensen is accused of possessing the stolen firearms, he allegedly sold the stolen firearms to 2 different people, and provided a false statement to impede the recovery of the firearms. Jorgensen was processed and released on an appearance ticket to appear in the Town of Columbus Court at a later date.

State Police thanked the public & tips are no longer needed in the Oneonta Walmart theft of about $1100 worth of merchandise by a man & woman. Police said that they have identified the pair who robbed the store on July 27.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 42 year old Kristina Hill of Cooperstown following the report of an accident on July 9th in the Town of Burlington. Hill was charged with Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Motor Vehicle Accident, Failure to Keep Right & Moving from a Lane Unsafely, Hill is accused of leaving the scene after crashing into a mailbox & failing to report the accident, also a child sustained an injury in the accident. Hill was issued Uniform Traffic Tickets returnable to the Town of Burlington Court at a later date.

State Police announced that the unidentified man police have been looking for since Wednesday afternoon, was taken into custody by members of Broome County SWAT Team Thursday Afternoon near his residence in the 6000-block of State Route 79 in the town of Fenton. There is no threat to the public. No injuries were reported to the man or to law enforcement, the investigation continues.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli announced that the Property tax levy growth will be capped at 2% for 2024 for all counties, towns and fire districts, as well as 44 cities and 13 villages. DiNapoli’s office calculated the 2024 inflation factor at 6.26% which is well above the 2% allowable levy increase. The tax cap limits annual tax levy increases to the lesser of the rate of inflation or 2% with certain exceptions including a provision that allows municipalities to override the tax cap.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office announced that a Bench Warrant issued by the Village of Sidney Court has resulted in the arrest of 55 year old Tina Kerschner of the town of Colchester. Last Saturday Night, Deputies & Town of Colchester Police located Kerschner at her residence, she was ordered to leave the premises at first she failed to comply, she was additionally charged with Obstructing Governmental Administration in addition to the bench warrant, she was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility & is due to appear in the Town of Colchester Court on a later date.

The Broome County District Attorney’s office announced that 42 year old Johnny Cobbins of Binghamton was sentenced to 5 years in prison after pleading guilty to felony Assault. Cobbins admitted to slashing a family member with a knife on May 16th, during a domestic argument inside a Lisle Avenue apartment. The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital where they were later released.

The State Department of Labor released preliminary local unemployment rates for May. The State’s unemployment rate dropped .1% to 3.9% in May, Locally, Chenango County’s rate was 2.7%, Delaware County was at 3.1% and Otsego County 2.9% in May.

State Comptroller’s office announced the results of an audit of the Oxford Academy and Central School District. District officials did not comply with competitive bidding requirements for 33 of 35 transportation contracts totaling $322,056, fuel credit card purchases resulting totaling $16,258 did not comply with district procedures, and that vehicle repair invoices and parts ordered by the vehicle maintenance and repair vendor were not reviewed to verify that the parts ordered were for district vehicles.

The Town of Sidney Highway Department announced that Back River Road will be closed from Rte 357 to Exit 10 starting June 26th thru June 28th. It will also be closed July 5th and July 6th for paving, area motorists are advised to use other local roads during the work periods.

Delaware County Sheriffs Office Criminal Investigation Division received information that inmate Derek Wignall of Hancock repetitively violated a County Court Order of Protection while incarcerated at the Delaware County Jail, prior to his release from the Correctional Facility. At the completion of their investigation, Officers located and arrested Wignall in the Village of Hancock, he is charged with Aggravated Criminal Contempt, he was arraigned and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bail. Wignall is scheduled to re- appear at Delhi Town Court at a later date to answer the charges.

The Oneonta Common Council held a special meeting last week, they voted to demolish the municipal parking garage, new plans call for the building of a new garage and possibly re-imagining the area into a new transit hub, Consulting firm Wendell Companies reported to the council that the whole project could cost up to $30 Million Dollars.

The Sidney Police Department, Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and State Police conducted a vehicle and traffic law detail Thursday from 5:00 to 10:00 PM. The goal of the detail was to take drunk and drugged drivers off the road as well as enforce vehicle and traffic laws, 15 traffic tickets were issued which included 2 arrests for aggravated unlicensed operation.

16 year old Krystal Lee of East Meredith is working her way up through the Country Music Ranks, she will be traveling to Dollywood in Tennessee next month for the Josie Music Awards, after her video was nominated from more than 23,000 entrants for her original song “No More Sometimes”, she visited WCDO this morning where she talked about upcoming local performances before her trip to Tennessee:

Firefighters responded to a blaze Friday morning at 427 Ouaquaga Road in the town of Colesville.  All occupants escaped safely, & no injuries were reported. Firefighters from Harpursville, West Colesville, Sanitaria Springs, Five Mile Point, West Windsor, Windsor and Ouaquaga responded.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The FCC today authorized nearly $16.2 million in federal funding through the FCC’s Connect America Fund, over the next decade to expand broadband to 8,088 unserved rural New York homes and businesses, the second round of matching funds being provided in a partnership with the state’s New NY Broadband Program.  Providers will begin receiving funding this month.   Locally, DTC Cable will receive $2,103,935 over the next decade to expand broadband to 712 rural homes and businesses at downstream speeds of at least 100 Mbps and upstream speeds of 20 Mbps

Delaware County sheriff’s deputies arrested 36 year old Russell Fisher & 58 Year old Joseph Fisher of Davenport on various weapons charges after they obtained & executed a search warrant.  Deputies were assisted at the scene by State Police explosives technicians,   Deputies seized fireworks and components commonly used in the manufacture of explosive devices.  Russell Fisher was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on Cash bail, Joseph Fisher was charged with the criminal possession of a weapon and unlawfully dealing with fireworks

Governor Cuomo signed legislation to enact sweeping new workplace harassment protections.  The legislation extends the statute of limitations for employment sexual harassment claims filed from 1 year to 3 years, expands the coverage of the Human Rights Law to all employers in the state; Updates the power of the Attorney General to enforce the Human Rights Law; and Requires a review of sexual harassment policies every 4 years.

State Police arrested 31 year old Edward Burnett of Utica for Driving While Ability Impaired with child 15 or under as passenger and Vehicular Assault.  Burnett is accused of striking and seriously injuring a pedestrian on State Route 8 in the town of Columbus.   Troopers working a detail at a Unadilla Motocross event on State Route 8, located a 20-year-old male from South Carolina unconscious, an off-duty Sidney Police Officer was on scene tending to the victim when troopers & then paramedics arrived.  The pedestrian was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Utica & was listed in critical condition.  Burnett was arraigned in the town of Columbus court & was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond.

Governor Cuomo signed 3 pieces of legislation expanding protections for victims of domestic violence. These measures broaden the definition of the crime of domestic violence to include forms of economic abuse such as identity theft, grand larceny and coercion; give victims the choice to vote by mail-in ballot, even if they remain within the county where they are registered to vote; and allow victims to report abuse to any law enforcement agency in New York State, regardless of where the violence originally took place.

A portion of New York State Route 205 through the Hamlet of Hartwick will be named in honor of United States Marine Corps Sergeant John Kempe Winslow under legislation signed into law.  The bill sponsored by Senator Jim Seward and Assemblyman John Salka pays tribute to the decorated Marine who was killed in action during the Vietnam War in 1969.  A formal sign installation will be scheduled by the State Department of Transportation at a later date.
