The Otsego County Solid Waste Department and the Otsego County Conservation Association are teaming up once again to promote the Otsego County Schools Plastic Film Recycling Challenge. The challenge promotes recycling of film plastics and is open to all public and private k-12 school buildings located in Otsego County. The challenge kicks off on America Recycles Day, November 15, and runs through April 14, 2023.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that since early January, when mobile sports wagering became available in New York, the State has collected $542 million in taxes through the week ending October 30, far surpassing every other state in the nation. An additional $200 million in licensing fees has also been collected, generating a total of more than $740 million in revenue, most of it to be used for education.

Delaware County Sheriff’s office arrested 41 year old Billie Jo Browning of Unadilla, after Deputies responded on October 28th, to a 2-car property damage motor vehicle accident on State Highway 28 in the Town of Meredith. 43 year old Ray Hyer of Unadilla was arrested in Ohio after he failed to appear in n Otsego County court earlier this year for sentencing on a criminal sexual act charge. Hyer was located in Sandusky, Ohio on October 21st, he was arrested and was extradited back to the Otsego County Jail, he faces additional charges on top of the original criminal sexual act conviction.

Broome County officials are investigating the death of an inmate in the Broome County Jail on Friday. 30 year-old Mitchell Lindow of Binghamton was being held on a murder charge when he was found deceased by Corrections officers conducting a head count, an autopsy was conducted Friday, no cause of death was determined.

State Police announced that 9 people were arrested & drugs were seized after search warrants were executed at Budget Inn Motel on Route 23 Southside in the town of Oneonta Thursday & Friday. State Police issued 11,601 tickets and arrested 189 people for impaired driving during the special traffic enforcement detail over Halloween weekend. The initiative targeted speeding and impaired drivers, began on Friday, October 28, and continued through Tuesday, November 1.

the Internal Revenue Service reports that some New Yorkers may be getting a 2nd stimulus check from the IRS. More than 9 million people may qualify to receive stimulus payments and tax credits, these are people who did not file a tax return because their income was too low. the deadline to file for the additional stimulus money is November 17th.

The State Health Department reported 1598 news cases of COVID 19 Thursday, after more than 119,000 tests were performed statewide.  The state has had over 461,000 positive tests since March; Hospitalizations were up to 648, there were 7 COVID deaths Thursday, giving the state 25497 deaths from the virus.

Chenango County Public Health reports 253 total cases of COVID 19, with 7 Active Cases, 3 Hospitalizations, & 83 Active Quarantines.  Chenango County reports 7 deaths & 229 Recoveries, they have performed over 29200 tests.

The Broome County Health Department announced today that they set a one day record with 78 new COVID cases diagnosed.  9 people are hospitalized, 1682 cases of the virus have been diagnosed in Broome County since March, there have been 82 deaths, and 1296 recoveries.  Health Department official remind residents to wear a mask & be vigilant about Hand washing & social distancing, following a recent spike in the numbers stemming from 2 local establishments.

New York State has released a mobile app that will alert people if they were in close contact with someone who tests positive for coronavirus.  The app is called COVID Alert NY, is voluntary and anonymous.  State officials believe that the app will help with contact tracing, and reduce the risk of infection, by allowing people to quarantine immediately once they are notified of an exposure through the app.

Delaware County Public Health was notified Thursday of a COVID 19 related death. The County now reports 8 deaths, 110 recoveries and a total of 123 cases since March. Currently there are 5 active cases, no one is hospitalized, and 41 are quarantined.

Otsego County Department of Health reported 2 new cases Thursday, 1 in SUNY Oneonta & 1 in Hartwick College. The County has had 895 total confirmed cases, 21 are active cases with 1 hospitalization, there have been 7 deaths, 723 of the cases are linked to SUNY Oneonta, & 20 confirmed cases are Hartwick College students.

Joe Angelino is a big winner in the 122 State Assembly Republican Primary yesterday, winning with 75% of the vote, he will face Democrat Richard Shaw in the November General Election.  In Other races, Joe Biden wins the state Democratic Party Nomination for President, Claudia Tenney beats George Phillips for the Republican Nomination to take on incumbent Democratic Congressman Anthony Brindisi in the fall, Tenney lost the seat to Brindisi 2 years ago. The results do not include absentee ballots.

State Police reported that the suspect in a recent Harpursville shooting has died.  38 year old Timothy Wilcox died in a Syracuse hospital from a self inflicted gun shot wound, he was accused of shooting his estranged wife, 35 year old Meghan Wilcox on June 19th in Harpursville.  Meghan Wilcox was transported to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City where she was in critical condition.

Congressman Anthony Brindisi announced a more than $1 million grant for Opportunities for Chenango. The funds are administered through the Department of Health and Human Services, & will be used for the Head Start Program.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is pushing for the inclusion of the Child Care Is Essential Act in the next coronavirus relief package, as that industry took a major hit from the Pandemic:

The Act would establish a $50 billion Child Care Stabilization Fund to provide grants to stabilize child care providers who were still open during the pandemic and would help child care providers that were forced to close, to safely reopen.

The State Health Department announced that there were 1538 patients in hospitals statewide being treated for the Coronavirus, the lowest number since mid-March.  There were 25 deaths from the Virus Monday, also among the lowest numbers since mid-march.  Coronavirus cases are at 384,575 since the pandemic hit New York, the death toll is 24,608.

Attorney General Letitia James announced that the state has renewed an order to halt the collection of medical and student debt owed to the State that has been referred to their Office, for an additional 30-day period, starting tomorrow through Thursday, July 16th. After this 30-day period, the Attorney General will reassess the needs of state residents for another possible extension.

NYSEG announced they will begin a phased approach to resuming customer-facing work that was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 46-year-old Jeannie Bame of Hobart Tuesday on a bench warrant issued by the Delaware County Court for failure to appear for a scheduled compliance conference relating to a felony DWI conviction.  Bame was committed to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending her appearance in Delaware County Court on Wednesday.  Bame was arraigned before County Court Judge Richard D. Northrup, Jr., on Wednesday morning, via remote teleconference, and was released on recognizance.

The State Department of Labor today announced that the backlog of pending unemployment benefit applications has been reduced to 7,580, following the crush of applications since March 1st because of the COVID 19 pandemic. & state shutdown. Lingering unprocessed applications includes those that are missing critical federally mandated information and cannot be processed, as well as duplicates, abandoned claims & those that are being investigated for potential fraud.  So far more than 2 million unemployment benefit applications have been processed, and those New Yorkers have received over $10 billion in benefits.

Officials with the 2020 summer Otsenango PONY League program announced today that they will postpone baseball activities, as they do not foresee high school athletic facilities becoming available for June and July due to mass gathering issues with the Coronavirus pandemic.   This will be the 1st time in over 50 years that they will not have the summer baseball program, they have discussed the possibility of a Fall league that would start the weekend after Labor Day and run for 6 weekends, playing two games on either Saturday or Sunday.

State Police received a 911 call at approximately 5:50 Tuesday afternoon that 79-year-old Beverly Golembeski was missing from a seasonal residence on Reed Road in the town of Kortright.  The call to 911 was made by Golembeski’s husband; Police were told that Mrs. Golembeski suffers from dementia.  Last night at about 10:49 pm, she was located by a forest ranger approximately half a mile from her residence; she was in good condition but was checked out by EMS as a precaution.

Delaware County received 2 new positive reports Saturday, 1 positive case do not reside in Delaware County; the case was transferred to New York City Health Department. Currently, Delaware County has 2 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19, they are unrelated. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 56 year old Richard Costello of Franklin in relation to an October 2019, oil spill on roadways in the Town of Franklin.  Costello was charged with Reckless Endangerment following an investigation of a motor vehicle accident on Case Hill Road in the Town of Franklin on October 27, 2019, caused by a fuel oil spill, which resulted in slick road conditions on several area roadways and thousands of dollars in clean-up costs.  Costello was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Franklin Court on a later date.

State Senator Fred Akshar held a press conference at the Broome County Sheriff’s Department yesterday, vowing to fight to overturn or fix some of the portions of the Bail Reform law that just went into effect that is sending some violent criminals back out onto the streets:

Akshar said that numerous cases have occurred already where someone has been released on an appearance ticket, and almost immediately committed a crime that they would not have been able to commit if they had been remanded to jail like they would have last year.

The opening of the 2020 personal income tax filing season has begun, with a dozen free tax filing assistance sites across New York State. Taxpayers who earned $69,000 or less in 2019 are eligible to file both their federal and New York State income tax returns at these locations at no cost. The Delaware County Chamber of Commerce will hold their next First Friday networking Breakfast on February 7th from 8:30 to 10:00 am at the Belleayre Mountain and Ski Center in Highmount.  The featured speaker for the event is New York State Senator James Seward, representing the 51st Senate District.

Governor Cuomo today announced the Executive Budget includes record funding for the Environmental Protection Fund at $300 Million.   The Budget appropriations include $39 million for solid waste programs, $89 million for parks and recreation, $152 million for open space programs and $20 million for the climate change mitigation and adaptation program.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Gary Warfield Jr. of East Branch on 1 count of endangering the welfare of a child.  Deputies allege that Warfield did knowingly act in a manner injurious to the physical, mental, or moral welfare of a child less than seventeen years of age. Warfield was released on an appearance ticket returnable the Town of Hancock court at a later date.

The American Red Cross announced that there are 2 blood drives being held in Broome County today in Harpursville from 2:30 to 6:30 PM at the Eastern Broome Senior Center, another is being held in Binghamton from 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM at the Binghamton State Office Building, 44 Hawley Street.  Donors of all blood types, especially types O positive and O negative are needed.  Donations can be made with the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

State Senator Fred Akshar joined members of law enforcement, crime victims’ advocates, district attorneys, and local leaders from throughout the region, to call for action from state government leaders in Albany to fix bail reform changes that recently went into effect. Akshar supports a full repeal of the bail reform laws, if that does not happen, he has proposed legislation to amend certain parts of the bill to give Judges the power to make bail decision on the most violent charges included in the legislation that went into effect January 1st.

The Mayors of Sidney, Bainbridge & Unadilla have teamed up to send out emails to their constituents regarding village notices, activities & events, Sidney Mayor Andy Matviak explains:

Matviak said that residents in each village should call their Village Clerk’s office to get their individual village’s email requirement, the email information that residents will submit will not be used for other purposes, a test run will go out this Thursday and the email blasts will go out every Thursday starting February 6th.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 46 year old Matthew Rolley of Norwich following an investigation into a 911 hang-up call of a man with a gun at a residence in the Town of Norwich. Rolley is accused of displaying a firearm in front of 3 people; one of victims was under the age of 17. Rolley was arrested, arraigned and released on his own recognizance. An order of protection was issued on behalf of the child involved; Rolley is scheduled to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

The New York Association of Counties announced that County Officials will convene in Albany for the next 3 days for Legislative Conferences at the Desmond Hotel and Conference Center. Workshops at the conference will cover a range of issues including drinking water safety, criminal justice reform, the opioid epidemic, early intervention, health insurance, the growing hemp economy, and more than a dozen more.

7 Individuals Have Been Identified for Testing for the Corona Virus, the CDC Determined 3 Cases were Negative, 4 Results are Still Pending, & so far, there are no Confirmed Cases in New York State. More Information about the coronavirus is available at health.ny.gov/diseases.

Governor Cuomo announced funding for a 10th round of the Regional Economic Development Councils and a 5th round of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative is included in the Executive Budget. So far, the State has invested more than $6.9 billion through the REDCs, funding more than 8,300 projects.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 51 year old William Macy of Bainbridge on 1 count of DWI, following a traffic stop on Sunset Avenue in the Village of Sidney. Macy was also charged with improper right turn at intersection, and moving from a lane unsafely. Macy was released on appearance tickets and is scheduled to re-appear in the Village of Sidney Court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff Deputies arrested 22 year old Joseph Bifaro of Walton on an Arrest Warrant issued by the Town of Walton Court for Criminal Contempt and Harassment. Bifaro is accused of disorderly behavior during a court session at the Hamden Town Court, he was arraigned in the Village of Walton Court and released on his own recognizance, and he will appear in the Town of Walton Court at a later date.
