State Police arrested 2 people after a traffic stop on I-88 in Worcester. A trooper observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed and initiated a traffic stop. After an investigation both the operator and passenger were arrested after drugs and paraphernalia were found in the vehicle. 30 year old Zachary Lushkevich of Laurens was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, 26 year old Katarina Lushkevich of Laurens was arrested for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, they were released on appearance tickets returnable to the town of Worcester Court on October 30th.

Tajiri the giraffe, who was born at Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, will not be going to be heading to a new wildlife facility in North Carolina. Animal Adventure officials announced on Saturday that “requirements and deadlines were not satisfied” on time for Tajiri’s transfer, instead, they announced that Construction starts today on a new building to house Tajiri at Animal Adventure, the project is expected to be completed in 3 to 4 weeks.

Democratic incumbent US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand will debate Republican opponent Chele Farley Thursday in New York City. A debate had been scheduled for Sunday sponsored by Spectrum’s New York City News channel; it was cancelled after Gillibrand refused to cross picket lines at Spectrum’s parent company Charter Communications. A debate between Gillibrand & Farley will be held at WABC-TV in New York City on Thursday, at 1:30 p.m.

Author Gray Basnight of Bethel New York has published his 3rd book, “Flight Of The Fox” a mystery thriller that takes place in Upstate New York, & is tied in to the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock Music & Arts festival in Bethel in 1969. Basnight told WCDO about his novel:

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 47 year old Eric Palmatier of Harpersfield for cruelty to animals & failure to provide proper food and sustenance. Deputies allege that Palmatier failed to provide food, water, shelter and veterinary care for a dog; he was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear at the Harpersfield Town Court at a later date.

The Sidney Village Police department is investigating a 1 Vehicle Crash into the China Buffet Building at about 12:19 PM this afternoon. Police reported that a Chrysler PT Cruiser was traveling westbound in the McDonald’s Parking Lot, when the unidentified Driver drove up the embankment & went into the exterior wall of the Restaurant, causing a hole in the wall. The accident is still under investigation.

Several Otsego County Fire companies responded to a fire at 4703 Route 28 in Hartwick Seminary Sunday. The fire was reported at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, 7 people were left homless, no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

State Police arrested 29 year old Kody Weidman of New Berlin for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation and Failure to Use an Interlock Device. Troopers observed Weidman commit a traffic violation while at State Route 20 and State Route 8, he attempted to elude troopers by turning into a driveway and turning off his headlights, troopers uncovered several grams of cocaine. Weidman was arrested and released on appearance tickets returnable to the town of Bridgewater Court on November 5th.

State Police arrested 38 year old David Miller of Pitcher for 4 counts of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. Troopers were advised on September 2, 2018 that Miller was in possession of several stolen road signs. Miller was arrested & was released on an appearance ticket returnable to the town of Pitcher Court on November 6th.

State Police arrested 35 year old Michelle Page of Colesville for 3 counts of Menacing & 27 year old Matthew Meade of Windsor, NY arrested for Reckless Endangerment, Troopers were dispatched to a residence on Circle Drive in Colesville for a reported disturbance. After an investigation, it was determined that Page menaced Meade and other people with a shotgun after he drove to her residence and recklessly drove on her lawn, almost striking her vehicle. Page was arraigned in the town of Colesville Court and released on her own recognizance. Meade was arraigned in the town of Kirkwood and also released on his own recognizance.

Norwich City police arrested an area couple for allegedly assaulting a child. Police were notified by the Chenango County Department of Child Protective Services, The child had been taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital’s Emergency room with injuries to the head & face, police arrested 31-year-old Marrianne Ray and 31-year-old Scott Ray of Norwich for 2nd degree Assault and endangering the welfare of a child, Both were arraigned in Norwich City Court and sent to the Chenango County Jail on $75,000 cash bail, they will reappear in Norwich City Court at a later date.

The trial of Dean & Adam Skelos continued Friday, with former Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos taking the stand. Governor Cuomo announced that New York’s maple industry hit a 74-year record in 2018 with the production of 806,000 gallons of maple syrup. The maple industry in New York has grown by nearly 50 percent in the last five years and continues to maintain the state’s standing as the second leading producer of fresh maple syrup in the nation. According to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York’s maple production constituted about 19 percent of the national total. New York producers also benefited from a long season in 2018 which lasted 52 days, compared to 43 days in 2017

The State DEC seized more than 1,100 pounds of undersized lobsters from Price Chopper in 3 different inspections over the last 4 months. The case was sparked in March when short lobsters were found at 2 Price Chopper stores in Binghamton. The distribution center for Price Chopper in Schenectady, & a routine inspection Tuesday, determined that 820 lobsters, or 15% of the inventory, were under the legal size limit. Price Chopper faces fines of up to $100 for every shellfish involved.

The DCMO BOCES Board selected Perry Dewey as the new District Superintendent, to lead 16 component school districts in Delaware, Chenango, Madison and Otsego Counties. The decision is the result of review and interview sessions conducted over a seven-month period. The State DEC announced that sporting licenses and Deer Management Permits for the 2016-17 season would be available for purchase beginning August 1. State police responded to a fatal motorcycle accident Friday night in Laurens. 20-year-old Eric Ericson of Laurens was driving north on state Route 205, when he lost control of his motorcycle, causing it to go off the road and strike a fixed object. Ericson was transported to Fox Hospital in Oneonta, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 27-year-old Nathan Livingood of Bethany Illinois, for harassment, criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, and 3rd degree assault, following a report of a fight Thursday at the Delaware County Fairgrounds. Livingood was arraigned in Walton Village Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail without bail; he is scheduled to re appear at Walton Village Court at a later date.

Chenango County Sheriff’s department arrested 57 year old Gregory Huzinec of Pharsalia for 2nd degree burglary and Grand Larceny. Huzinec is accused of entering a residence and a garage and taking property, he was taken into custody without incident, processed, and arraigned in the Town of Pharsalia Court & was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of cash bail to reappear at a later date.

Bingay was stopped for operating a motor vehicle that was uninspected and was found to be intoxicated. Governor Cuomo announced that attendance at New York State Park campgrounds is on pace for another record-setting year, and reminded New Yorkers that many of the state’s finest camping facilities are open for fall camping well into the autumn months. Through August 17, New York State Park campgrounds are on pace for the busiest year on record. Visitors have reserved more than 562,000 overnight stays at State Park campgrounds so far, marking a 5.2 percent increase over 2014. The record set last year was 594,441 overnight stays.

Governor Cuomo announced that individuals and entities that defraud New Yorkers seeking immigration-related assistance would now be subject to felony or misdemeanor charges. Previously, there was no law specifically protecting newcomers from fraud, scams and exploitation, immigrants will now benefit from additional requirements for those providing them with assistance as well as stronger consumer disclosures.

State Police are investigating a grand larceny at the Oneonta Wal-Mart, January 25th at approximately 7:15pm. A suspect walked into the store and filled up a shopping cart with merchandise valued at over $1,100, then exited through a fire exit and left in a vehicle occupied by another suspect. The suspect is described as a white male, wearing a dark baseball cap and a green long-sleeved shirt with writing on the back, the Vehicle description was a Chevrolet, possibly a Cavalier, dark blue in color, with unknown white NY license plates, a green sticker on the driver side of front bumper and missing the front driver side wheel hubcap. Police said that the merchandise stolen was an HP Desktop PC, Olympus digital camera, wireless Bluetooth speakers, headphones and a bucket. State Troopers arrested 24-year-old Nathaniel Bracci, 18-year-old Sarah Gangell and 23-year-old Brayan Thompson of Delhi for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. The arrests resulted from a traffic stop on State Route 10 in Stamford,  Bracci and Thompson were issued Appearance Tickets and are scheduled to reappear before the Town of Stamford Court on May 14th,  Gangell was arraigned in the Town of Stamford Court and remanded to Delaware County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail or $5000 bond pending court action.

The state Appellate Division ruled unanimously in favor of the town of Dryden in Tompkins County, and the town of Middlefield in Otsego County today, for passing zoning laws that prohibit natural gas drilling. Norse Energy & Middlefield landowner Jennifer Huntington brought the lawsuits against the 2 towns in recent years for banning gas drilling after they already had signed leases to drill for natural gas, today’s ruling upholds rulings from lower courts.  Appeals to  today’s decision to the state Court of Appeals are anticipated.

State Troopers arrested 29-year-old Lauren Lauko of Deposit for Unlawful Possession of Marihuana and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. The arrest was the result of a traffic stop on State Route 17 in the Town of Hancock,  Lauko was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Hancock Court on May 6th.

NEWS THURSDAY 2-28-13 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/p-m-news-thursday-2-28-13/ Thu, 28 Feb 2013 18:58:42 +0000 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/?p=621 Continue reading ]]> Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting is confirming the identity of the body found on Tuesday February 26, 2013 on Center Road in the Town of Pharsalia.  The body had been identified by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office as Jennifer Ramsaran who was reported missing by her husband on December 11, 2012.  The Sheriff’s Office along with the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office is still investigating the cause of Jennifer’s death.  The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information to contact them at 337-1924 or 607 337 1864.  All calls will be kept confidential.

The State DEC missed another deadline to finalize regulations governing natural gas development, & the Joint Landowners Coalition announced that they are moving ahead and seeking plaintiffs for its lawsuit against New York State.  Coalition Attorney Scott Kurkoski comments:

The Oneonta Town Board will have a workshop meeting tonight on a proposed extension of a moratorium on natural gas drilling.  The meeting will be held in the Oneonta Town Hall in West Oneonta at 7:00 PM, A public hearing is set for 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, March 13th.   Last year, the Oneonta Town Board passed a 12-month moratorium; the new proposal would extend that for another 12 months.

The Otsego County Planning Department, the Otsego County Conservation Association, Opportunities for Otsego, and Sustainable Otsego, have teamed up for a series of workshops on how homeowners, small businesses, and non-profits can get an energy assessment.   The workshop series will kick off on Saturday March 9, in the Butternut Valley Room at SUCO’s Hunt Union. From 10 am till 1 pm, followed by workshops on March 20th in cherry valley, April 10th in Morris & April 27th in Edmeston.  More information is available at 723-0110.

After a week & a half vacation, state lawmakers got back to work today in Albany.  Lawmakers will spend much of their time this month working on the 142.6 billion dollar state budget, which is due by April first.  Other proposals from Governor Cuomo include a minimum wage hike to $8.75 an hour, mapping out where proposed casinos should be located,

US Senator Charles Schumer reintroduced the Metal Theft Prevention Act, to try to prevent the theft and sale of stolen scrap metal.  The bill would help make it harder for those who steal metal items to turn around & sell it. Reports of Metal theft has jumped more than 80 percent in recent years, with copper pipe regularly taken from vacant homes a& other structures, Between 2009 and 2011, the National Insurance Crime Bureau found over 25,000 insurance claims related to metal theft, Schumer’s bill has bipartisan support.

Police have nabbed a man who may have been involved in series of store robberies over the last few months across the southern tier.   62-year-old John Malowsky of Attica was arrested by the Tioga County Sheriff’s Department in connection with an armed robbery of the Owego CVS store last night, and a Maurice’s in Corning the night before.    Deputies apprehended Malowsky leaving the CVS Store; he is also accused of threatening Deputies with a knife.  Malowsky will be arraigned in Tioga County and is expected to be arraigned for armed robberies in Chemung and Steuben Counties shortly.
