Binghamton police are investigating the shooting of 40 year old Grady Hunter on Sunday, Hunter was hospitalized with life threatening injuries, Police reported that Hunter was sitting in his car outside a Deli at 121 Susquehanna Street at around 12:00 Noon Sunday. A suspect has been taken into custody today, anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call detectives at 772-7080.

5 people died & 1 was critically injured in a house fire on State Route 145 in East Durham early Monday Morning. Nicholas and Mary Mammano, & their 3 grandchildren died, John Mammano was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries. The cause of the fire was under investigation, and Autopsies have been ordered to determine the cause of death.

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer visited Awestruck Ciders in Sidney this afternoon; he is calling on the Alcohol & Tobacco Tax Trade bureau to reverse a provision that would get in the way of the growth of Awestruck & Other Cideries.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration announced that the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York entered a consent decree of permanent injunction against Vulto Creamery or Walton. The defendants cannot prepare, process, manufacture, pack and/or hold FDA-regulated food products until they can ensure that Listeria is not present in their facility and their food. Vulto Creameries products were linked to a multi-state outbreak of Listeria in their cheese products, 2 people died & 8 were hospitalized after consuming the products contaminated by Listeria.

Governor Cuomo announced more than 60 new farms & businesses have received research permits under the State’s Industrial Hemp Agricultural Research Pilot program, many of those are located in the Southern Tier. The State has invested more than $4.6 billion in the region since 2012 to lay for groundwork for the plan to expand Hemp production.

The Copes Corners Park Spring Fest committee for the Town of Butternuts is soliciting craft, artist, product, and general vendors for its 4th annual Spring Fest. Delaware County Public Health is holding a “Medical Countermeasures” drill today to practice and test the ability to dispense large amounts of medicine in the event of a public health threat such as a disease outbreak or bioterrorism threat to the community. Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro is expected to reverse course & will launch his campaign for governor after all. Molinaro said in January that he wouldn’t run, but he said that “outpouring” from supporters made him change his plans, he will face State Senator John DeFrancisco for the Republican party Nomination in the primary later this year.

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies invite fans to their annual Meet the Rumble Ponies Dinner on Tonight at the Holiday Inn in Downtown Binghamton. Tickets are on sale, at the Box Office at NYSEG Stadium. The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force executed search warrants in Endicott & Vestal, following a traffic stop in Endicott, 4 Broome County residents & 2 from Kentucky have been arrested on Drug charges, police seized crystal meth, crack cocaine, morphine, oxycodone, $24,000 in cash form suspected drug sales, 2 loaded handguns, including 1 stolen from Kentucky, plus drug packaging, digital scales, plastic packaging and drug paraphernalia. All 6 were arraigned, 5 were remanded to the Broome County jail pending future court action.

Binghamton Firefighters responded to 3 fires in unoccupied buildings last night at 8 Livingston Street, & 23 Tudor Street & Susquehanna Street within a 6 hour period. The 3 fires follow another fire at an unoccupied apartment building at 38 Columbus Park East on March 1st, all 4 fires are labelled suspicious & the investigations are ongoing.

1 million people have registered to vote using the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles’ online registration process since 2012. Of the 1 million who have registered online, more than 450,000 were first-time voters. Utica Police arrested 23-year-old Fahrudin Omerovic (o MAIR o vich) on 4 counts of making terroristic threats against Utica College Monday, resulting in a lockdown. Omerovic is a Utica College student he faces arraignment this morning, the incident is still under investigation.

Governor Cuomo today issued a Travel Advisory for all areas east of I-81 as well as a travel ban on tractor trailers on certain roads beginning at 8:00 AM, due to the winter weather conditions. Once the advisory and ban go into effect, all tractor trailers, tandem trailers, buses, box trucks, and other high profile vehicles will be restricted from entering: I-88 from Binghamton to Albany, I-81 from Pennsylvania line to the New York State Thruway, & Route 17 Binghamton to I-84.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Department announced a missing persons alert, for 60 Year old Margaret Thayer, who is described as white, female, 5’5″ tall 140 pounds, hazel eyes, she wears glasses, and may have been wearing a maroon winter coat. State Police arrested 23 year old Mark Allen of Fenton for Criminal Possession Marihuana. Allen was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by troopers for numerous traffic violations in the town of Windsor. An investigation revealed that Allen had approximately 100 grams of marijuana in his possession. Allen was released on tickets returnable to the town of Windsor Court on March 6, 2018.

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball warns consumers not to consume The Maiden’s Creamery “Wild Meadow” raw goat milk cheese made by Mark Harvey, of South New Berlin, due to possible Listeria contamination. No illnesses have been reported in connection with this product, the label shows plant number 36-1315, with a code of 101. This product was sold at the Cooperstown Farmers’ Market, in late December and early January and at the Sunflower Natural Foods Market, Woodstock, starting on January 10th. State Police arrested 35 year old Tyson Haskins of Deposit, for Unlawful Manufacture of Methamphetamine, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia. The arrest occurred after a Trooper checked on an occupied vehicle that was stopped on Michigan Hollow Road in the Town of Deposit. Haskins was found to unlawfully possess needles, drug paraphernalia, an electronic scale, and about 1.75 grams of methamphetamine. Haskins was arraigned in the Town of Deposit Court and was remanded to the Broome County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 property Bond.

Governor Cuomo today announced the first-in-the-nation cyber security regulation to protect New York’s financial services industry and consumers from the ever-growing threat of cyber-attacks would take effect on March 1, 2017. The final regulation requires banks, insurance companies, and other financial services institutions regulated by the Department of Financial Services to establish and maintain a cybersecurity program designed to protect consumers’ private data and ensure the safety and soundness of New York’s financial services industry. The regulation will be become effective upon publication in the New York State Register on March 1, 2017.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli’s office released audits of 2 area towns this week. The audit for the Town of Colchester shows that the Board does not have a written fund balance policy that addresses reasonable levels to be maintained, also the Board underestimated revenues by 7 percent and overestimated expenditures by 18 percent, on average, in the general fund. The Town of Greene’s audit shows that the Board did not develop realistic budgets for its four major operating funds, Town officials have not developed a policy for acceptable levels of fund balance to maintain & Town officials have not developed long-term financial and capital plans.

State Police arrested 27 year old Tina Keirnan of Unadilla for 2 counts of Criminal Mischief & 2nd degree Harassment & 26 year old Ashley Mellio of Mastic, New York for 3rd degree assault. Troopers repsonded to the report of a fight, where Keirnan had struck Mellio in the face and would not let her call the police for help, both women were arrested. Keirnan & Mellio were issued tickets to the Town of Unadilla Court later this month.

State Police arrested 44 year old Peter Provenzano of Westford for 3rd degree Assault & Endangering the Welfare of a Child, after troopers responded to a dispute in the Town of Westford. Troopers determined that during an argument Provenzano punched a child in the face causing an injury. The victim was treated at a local hospital & was released. Provenzano was arraigned and was released, he faces court action on February 22nd.

The proposal would direct most crimes committed by 16 & 17 year olds to family court. New York & North Carolina are the only 2 remaining states that still prosecute 16 & 17 years olds as adults in criminal courts. Governor Cuomo has forwarded similar legislature in his Executive Budget Proposal.

Governor Cuomo today announced a proposal to modernize laws to make it easier for charitable organizations to raise funds through gaming, including raffles and other types of games. This proposal will help veterans’ organizations, fraternal and service organizations, churches, volunteer fire departments and other non-profits to raise funds for their organizations. The State Gaming Commission will conduct public hearings to gather input from charitable organizations on any additional improvements to New York charitable gaming laws and regulations.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a snowmobile accident in the Town of Stamford & the discharge of gunshots by a property owner during an argument with snowmobiler. Deputies accuse 37 years old Willem Joosse of Hobart intentionally drove a snowmobile into a horse enclosure, until the property owners confronted him. Joose allegedly threatened to run over the owners, 57-year-old Joseph Laskowski retrieved a shotgun, and fired shots into the air. Deputies arrested Joosse for snowmobiling while intoxicated, criminal mischief, menacing, trespassing and operating an unregistered & uninsured snowmobile. Deputies also charged Laskowski with Menacing, both subjects were issued appearance tickets and were released, they will return to Town of Stamford Court at a later date.

Vestal Police responded to a fatal accident on State Route 17 eastbound between exits 66 & 67 at about 4:00 AM this morning, involving a Tractor-trailer truck. Traffic was detoured to Route 434 or route 17C eastbound, as the highway was closed for clean up & accident reconstruction. More details are expected to be released shortly.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Department reported that 42 year old Scott Gross of Windsor was killed when a tractor trailer hit his disabled Jeep on Route 17 in Windsor, early Thursday morning. Gross suffered traumatic injuries and died at the scene, after his vehicle was hit from behind by a tractor trailer driven by 42 year old Anthony Baker of Solvay, at about 1:30 AM Thursday, both vehicles went over an embankment. Baker was taken to Wilson Hospital for head injuries, he was released, and no tickets were issued.

State Police and local law enforcement statewide will be increasing patrols to combat drunk and impaired driving this Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day is one of the busiest travel holidays of the year and police will be out in force to remove impaired and reckless drivers from our highways. The Delaware county sheriffs department arrested 2 Walton men on drug charges following the execution of a Search Warrant Friday. Arrested were 29-year-old Cory Costello and 27-year-old Antonio Felice, deputies seized . heroin, prescription controlled substances, hypodermic instruments, marijuana and nearly $500 cash. Felice was also in possession of a Public Assistance Benefit card. Costello and Felice were each charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, more charges are expected. Both were arraigned in the Town of Walton Court & were remanded to the Delaware County Jail, Felice was ordered held on $100,000 cash bail, Costello was held on$50,000 cash bail.

Governor Cuomo announced $74.2 million in grant awards for 6 projects to transform and improve the delivery of health care in Southern Tier. The awards are being made through the Capital Restructuring Financing Program and Essential Health Care Provider Support Program. Locally, the United Health Services Hospitals will receive $14,332,500 for the STRIPPS Information Technology Infrastructure & Delaware Valley Hospital will receive $1,400,000 for the Telemedicine Project in Partnership with UHS.

The percentage of school districts initially planning to override New York’s property tax cap in 2016-17 has nearly doubled when compared to last year, but still remains relatively small, according to preliminary data filed with the office of State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. As of March 2nd, 6 percent, or 36, of the 601 school districts that reported, indicated that they would seek an override of the tax cap. Last year, 3.5 percent, indicated plans to override the tax cap. Property tax levy growth for school districts is capped at 0.12 percent above current levels for the 2016-17 fiscal year. School budgets head to voters for approval on Tuesday, May 17th.

A Town of Columbus resident was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on an active Arrest Warrant for Grand Larceny. Deputies arrested 40 year old Shawn Loomis, following an investigation into the report of $1,600 worth of stolen equipment, Loomis is accused of possessing & selling the equipment, he was taken into custody without incident and arraigned in the Town of Columbus Court to reappear at a later date.

On Sunday, Chenango County Deputies arrested Bernt Hansen of Afton for DWI, after an investigation of a motor vehicle accident. Hansen was also issued tickets for Failure to keep right, leaving the scene of a property damage motor vehicle accident and refusal to take a breath test; he was released to a sober third party and is to appear in the Town of Greene Court at a later date.

A 20-year-old Bashiem Jenkins of Norwich was arrested Saturday for criminal possession of a controlled substance following a traffic stop in the city of Norwich. Jenkins was arraigned and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on bail pending future court action.

State Police arrested 47 year old Steven Scott of Unadilla, Saturday for the felony of criminal possession of a weapon, plus petty larceny & possession of a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle. Trooper reoponded to the report of clothing being taken from the House of Consignment on Main Street in Unadilla. Scott was located nearby in his vehicle, a search of the vehicle found that Scott unlawfully possessed a loaded .22 caliber rifle and the stolen clothing from the store. Scott is a convicted felon & is not legally allowed to possess firearms. Scott was arraigned & was remanded to the Otsego County jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 property bond pending court action on March 11th.

The Delaware County Department of Economic Development is pleased to announce the acceptance of grant applications for consideration under the County’s recently awarded Agricultural Microenterprise Program. Broome County fire investigators have released the names of the 4 family members who died in a house fire on State Line Road in the town of Vestal Thursday morning. 33-year-old Nicole Tarbox, her son, 13-year old Evyn, and her two daughters, 9-year-old Mya, and 3-year old Mariah were killed, 15 year old Shawn Tarbox survived after he jumped out of a 2nd floor window. Investigators believe that the fire originated in the first floor kitchen near a stairway, which trapped family members inside.

Today’s rainy forecast will move the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s 75thAnniversary Celebration Ceremony indoors to the Hall of Fame Gallery, featuring Hall of Famers Phil Niekro and Cal Ripken, at 11:00 AM. The event will be open to those purchasing a Museum admission, it was previously scheduled to be held on the front steps, with portions of Main Street closed, it will remain open to vehicle traffic. Today’s Ceremony will mark the 75th birthday of the Museum, which opened its doors on June 12th 1939, as an estimated crowd of 12,000 fans packed Main Street to witness the Ceremony.

The New York State Senate passed Senator Tom Libous’s “Buy From the Backyard Act” to promote the purchase of locally grown and produced food. The bill requires that state agencies allocate 20% of their total contracts for food from within New York State. The bill has been sent to the Assembly. 22-year-old Isaiah Criss of Binghamton was sentenced in Broome County Court, to 25 years to life for the murder of 27-year-old Jeremiah Reynolds of Binghamton. Criss was found guilty of shooting and killing Reynolds at the Rock-B Tavern in Binghamton in September 2012. Criss was also sentenced to a concurrent term of 15 years for criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.

Tomorrow, residents across the state will vote on school budget, and elect candidates to school boards. Most of the area school districts kept their tax levy increase at 1% to 2%, the Sidney school district actually has a decrease of 2.5% in their tax levy, Norwich & Greene have 0% increases, the Walton central school district is requesting a 5,5% increase, & the Greene school district is seeking a 3% increase. School board races will be on the ballot in the Oneonta, Oxford & Unadilla valley district.

The Sidney village police arrested 44-year-old Ralph Fuller of Walton for predatory sexual assault, 1^st degree burglary, & criminal possession of a weapon, Fuller is accused of breaking into a Sidney residents home, using a taser and raping the victim, he is being held in the Delaware County Jail without bail pending future court action.

State and local law enforcement will hit the roads looking for people who are not wearing seat belts, as part of the “Click It or Ticket” Campaign through the end of May. In New York State, drivers and passengers can be fined if they are caught without their seat belt. Drivers can even receive points on their license. 21% of highway deaths in the State happen to occupants who were not buckled up.

Former Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno was acquitted on all charges relating to alleged political corruption on Friday. The jury in this 2^nd trial deliberated for about 4 hours, Bruno was convicted of the fraud charges in 2009 in a trial at which jurors acquitted him of five other fraud counts and could not decide on a sixth count. Bruno plans to ask state taxpayers to reimburse his legal expenses which cost into the millions.

The Northeast Classic Car Museum and NBT Bank announced interior improvements at the Museum, which are being underwritten by NBT Bank. The donation will enable the Museum to upgrade and enhance its banquet facility, revamp a catering preparation area, enclose a storage area, install a sliding door room divider, purchase matching chairs and tables to complete seating for 250 people, and purchase a new 14′ X 10′ projection screen. The new NBT Bank Event Center will provide a multifunction area for future large events.

Howie Hawkins of Syracuse won the Green Party nomination for governor of New York again. Hawkins won the nomination on Saturday in Troy. In 2010, Hawkins received 59,906 votes, more than any other 3^rd party candidate who ran against Democrat Andrew Cuomo. The centerpiece of the Green Party is a proposal to build a 100 percent clean energy by 2030, which they claim could create 4.5 million new jobs over the next 15 years.

A Norwich teen is facing charges after she jumped out a window at the Norwich City Police Department. 17-year-old Cheyenne Davenport was charged with 2nd degree burglary, 2 counts of petty larceny and criminal possession of a controlled substance, after she allegedly entered a relative’s house and took medication and cash. 2 hours later, she jumped out the department’s window, Police found her hiding in a nearby house and also charged her with 2nd degree escape. Davenport was sent to the Chenango County jail on $2,500 bail.

12.6% of New York residents’ income went to state and local taxes in 2011, the highest rate in the nation, according to a report from the Tax Foundation. Their annual report placed New York at the top of the list for the second straight year, though the total burden fell from 13.1% in 2010. The national average for 2011 was 9.8%. State Lawmakers have lowered the State tax rates since 2011.

The Delaware, Ulster & Greene Sheriff’s Departments and State Police investigated vehicle thefts, & announced the arrest of 53-year-old Joel Yaro of Ulster Park for 3rd & 4th degree Grand Larceny. Yaro is accused of the theft of a vehicle from Hancock that was recovered in the Town of Kortright later that day, following the recovery of that vehicle; Deputies investigated the theft of a vehicle from the Town of Kortright, which was recovered by Greene County Sheriff’s Deputies the following day. Yaro was arraigned in the Town of Hancock Court on the two Grand Larceny charges Wednesday; he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail pending further court action.

Tougher texting-while-driving penalties for teenage and new drivers were included in this year’s state budget agreement. Under the state’s new budget, drivers who are under 18, or have a probationary license, will see their driving rights suspended for 120 days on a first texting conviction and a year on the second one. The governor has pushed for tougher distracted-driving penalties since taking office in 2011, when he and lawmakers changed the state’s texting-while-driving ban from a secondary to a primary offense. Last year, there were 55,130 texting-while-driving tickets issued in the state, up 82 percent from the previous year.

State attorney general Eric Schneiderman announced agreements with 10 repossession businesses to help limit the marketing of short-term loans using cars as collateral. With so-called title loans, the short-term borrowing by consumers with poor credit histories can carry high interest rates, making them difficult to pay off and easier to roll over for additional interest.
