The State Health Department have included Broome and Tioga counties in an “orange zone” designation for counties at high risk of transmission of the latest strains of the COVID-19 virus . 10 counties have been designated orange, The Broome County Health Department reported 677 new confirmed cases of the virus since the middle of last week, with 31 people hospitalized on Friday & a 7 day positivity rate of 9.5%.

The State DEC are reported sightings of the invasive Southern Pine Beetle, which is native to the southeastern U.S. They are known as destructive pests and pose a significant risk to New York’s pine forests. The DEC said that infestations are spreading and most recently were found in Saratoga County, as well as several locations in the Hudson Valley. DEC and the Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation said they will be closely monitoring multiple State Parks.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies on patrol in Delhi observed a vehicle fail to stop for a stop sign, failing to signal a turn & traveling through a parking lot to avoid the intersection. Deputies identified the driver as 18 year old Mikaela Duran on Brooklyn, Duran had a BAC measured at .15%. she was charged with DWI & driving with a BAC of .08%, operating a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol under age 21, as well as several other infractions, Duran was released on tickets returnable to the Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

The State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, the Otsego County Office of Emergency Services & the Worcester Fire Department have determined the cause of the recent fire in Worcester was accidental. It was determined that the fire originated from an electric appliance that was in use at Hidden Memories at 143 Main Street, the fire destroyed 3 downtown buildings.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched Tuesday to a report of a hit and run motor vehicle accident on State Highway 10 in the Town of Delhi. 30-year old Michael Laureanti of Delhi, rear ended another vehicle and fled from the crash scene, he was located & further investigation revealed that Laureanti was operating the vehicle at the time of the accident while his driver’s license was suspended due to a failure to pay child support. Laureanti was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a property damage motor vehicle accident, he was released on traffic tickets returnable to the Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

For the first time since 2019, property tax levy growth for school districts will be capped at 2%, up from 1.23% last year, according to State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The tax cap limits annual tax levy increases to the lesser of the rate of inflation or 2%. School districts may override the cap with 60% voter approval of their budget. The 2% levy limit affects the tax cap calculations for 676 school districts and 10 cities with fiscal years starting July 1, 2022,

As the rise of the Omicron variant continues to threaten the safety of our nation’s health care workforce, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is calling on the Biden administration to continue and make permanent the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) emergency COVID-19 protections for health care workers, after OSHA let the temporary requirements to lapse:

The Chenango County District Attorney’s Office reported that Cody Coleman of Smithville Flats, appeared in Chenango County Court on December 20th to accept that plea bargain, for the murder of his 16 year old Girlfriend Amelia Wakefield in May of 2019. The case was scheduled to go to trial in May of 2020, but was delayed by the COVID 19 pandemic. Chenango County District Attorney’s office offered a plea deal, the charge was lessened from murder to manslaughter, Coleman is scheduled to be sentenced on February 28th in Chenango County Court.

The State Department of Health issued guidance today for vaccinating children ages 5 to 11 against COVID 19. The FDA and CDC have approved Pfizer’s child-sized doses of the vaccine, which were found to be 90.7% effective against virus, There is a consent form that parents must fill out before their children can get vaccinated, at coronavirus.health.ny.gov. State Police are investigating a shooting in the town of Conklin, Early Thursday morning. Police responded following the report of a person or persons firing several shots from a dark colored sedan on Barbara Avenue, the shots struck a vehicle and residence, there were no injuries reported. Federal prosecutors in Broome County Have charged Connor Spells of Sacketts Harbor following an undercover investigation regarding child pornography and an attempt to meet an underage female for inappropriate sexual behavior. Spells is accused of driving to Broome County to meet with a 10- year-old girl, he was met by officers and was charged with attempted enticement of a minor and distribution of child pornography Spells is being held pending future court action.

Delaware county sheriff’s department arrested 31-year-old Jennifer Morris of East Branch Wednesday for falsely reporting an incident and a violation of parole. Deputies responded to a Monday morning 911 call where a female reported being held against her will by 2 men in East Branch. Deputies and Troopers determined that the occupants had not called 911 and that no crime was being committed. The 911 call originated from an telephone number associated with more than one thousand 911 hang-up calls to the Delaware County 911 Center since May. The State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Parole Officers arrested Morris for violating the terms of parole from her earlier conviction for Falsely Reporting an Incident, for making on-line threats against Walton school children through social media. Morris was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $5000 cash bail or $10,000 bond; she will remain held without bail on the Parole Violation Detainer Warrant.

State Police at Sidney arrested 38-year-old Damion Hoag of Fallsburg for 1st degree Sex Abuse, & Endangering the Welfare of a Child, following an investigation into allegations that Hoag was having sexual contact with a person less than 11 years of age in the Town of Butternuts. Hoag was arraigned in the Town of Oneonta court and was remanded to the Otsego County jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 property bond. His next court date is on August 25th.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed a bill that authorizes 16 and 17-year-olds to make organ donations upon their death. The legislation includes appropriate safeguards that enable parents or legal guardians to rescind the decision if the minor dies before age 18. Current law provides that the minimum age to make an anatomical gift in New York State is 18.

Lawrence Harvey of Coventry was arrested by Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for 2nd degree menacing. Deputies & State Police responded to a dispute in the Town of Coventry where one of the participants was reported to be using a knife and a baseball bat. Harvey was subdued, arrested and was arraigned in the Town of Bainbridge Court, he will return to Town of Coventry Court at a later date.

State Police arrested 45 year old Audra Brendel-Hart of Bainbridge for aggravated harassment, after troopers responded to a report of threatening telephone calls being received at a home in Conklin. Brendel-Hart allegedly made over 10 telephone calls threatening to harm the victim with a baseball bat last Friday Night into Saturday morning. She was arraigned and released, she faces action in the Town of Conklin shortly.

The Delaware County Board of Elections will have a voting machine at the Delaware County Fair on Friday August 19 to educate the public on how to vote on the machines. Otsego County Conservation Association will be holding a highway cleanup along State Route 80 tomorrow from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. The cleanup is part of New York State’s Adopt-A-Highway program, Volunteers will meet at OCCA’s office at Mohican Farm, at the corner of Route 80 and Allen Lake Road, and will collect trash along a two-mile stretch of the road. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies announced the arrest of 3 people Saturday, for allegedly smuggling drugs into the Delaware county jail. 21-year-old Rosemarie Palmerini of Fleischmanns is accused of bringing a quantity of heroin into the Delaware County Correctional Facility during visitation Saturday morning, with an inmate, 39-year-old Christopher Fairbairn of Margaretville. Both were arraigned in the Town of Stamford Court & were remanded on cash bail, to the Delaware County Jail on Bail pending court proceedings Thursday. On Monday 34-year-old Jennifer Myers-Finch of Arkville was also charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, and Promoting Prison Contraband, for allegedly coordinating the jail visitation between Palmerini and Fairbairn. Myers-Finch was arraigned and was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $30,000 cash bail.

Oneonta Police & State parole officers arrested 27-year-old Jordan Clapperton of Oneonta for possessing an obscene sexual performance by a child and possessing a sexual performance by a child. Clapperton is accused of possessing images on his mobile device of girls under the age of 16 engaging in illicit activities. Clapperton was being held pending arraignment in the city of Oneonta Court.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office reported that 24 year old Ryan Sutcliffe of Cumberland, Rhode Island was sleeping in his tent when a large tree limb, broke off & landed on him, at about 12:45 AM Saturday at the Grand Slam Camp Ground on County Highway 18 in the town of Morris. Sutcliffe was taken to Chenango County Memorial Hospital in Norwich where he was declared deceased. The investigation is continuing.
