Several area fire companies responded Wednesday morning to the report of a fire at Pit Stop Auto at 178 Howe Lane in Afton. Owner Ron Ford said that they were burning cardboard, the fire eventually spread to a pile of used tires, and then the structure, which was a total loss. No Injuries have been reported.

State Police stepped up their traffic enforcement efforts over the July 4th holiday period beginning on Friday. Troopers focused on drivers who were speeding, distracted and exhibiting signs of impairment. During this time period, troopers issued 270 traffic tickets and arrested six people for driving while intoxicated. Notably, New York State Police only investigated one personal injury collision, which involved one of the drivers that was arrested for DWI.

The Oneonta Common Council decided last night to appoint Acting Police Chief Douglas Brenner as the chief of Oneonta Police on a permanent basis. Brenner had been the acting chief since January.

A Delaware County Grand Jury handed down a Sealed Indictment following a joint investigation by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office & the Village of Sidney Police, regarding narcotics sales in the Sidney area. 36 year old Angel Mirabal of Sidney was charged with 3 counts of Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance, for allegedly selling cocaine in the Village of Sidney, and 1 count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, with intent to sell, after discovering that Mirabal possessed a quantity of cocaine at the time of his arrest on the Sealed Indictment Warrant. Mirabal was arraigned Thursday & Friday on all charges and was sent to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to be held without bail.

State Police responded to an industrial accident at Upstate Shredding in Owego Friday. 49-year-old Michael Burke of Owego was walking across the scrap yard when he was struck by a front loader being operated by another employee. Burke was declared dead at the scene, State Police, Owego Police Department and OSHA are continuing the investigation.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 29 year old Alexis Seward of Otego, Saturday for 1 count each of Felony DWI, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, & resisting arrest, following a 1 car accident in Franklin. Seward’s vehicle went off the roadway and into a ditch, the investigation revealed that Seward’s driver’s license was revoked, due to a previous alcohol related charge, Seward then resisted the Deputy’s attempt to arrest her. Seward was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $5,000 bail or $10,000 bond, pending future Court action.

Chenango county Sheriff’s department arrested 2 Sherburne residents for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance Saturday. Deputies responded to the Sherburne Motel after receiving a complaint of drug activity in area, they observed a subject smoking methamphetamine upon arrival. Sara Hart and Russell Osborne were both arrested after they were found to be in possession of methamphetamine, they were released on appearance tickets pending future court action.

Chenango County sheriff’s department arrested 35-year-old Patrick Bousson of Otselic, on a charge of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals. Bousson was charged following a complaint that he shot & killed a dog, he was taken into custody without incident, and he was processed and will appear in the Town of Otselic Court at a later date.

The Delaware County Department of Economic Development announced a 2nd round of funding under the Agricultural Microenterprise Program. During the first funding round, the Department received 17 applications from new and existing Ag related businesses. Chenango County Sheriff’s Narcotics Division arrested 20-year-old Cheyanne Moore of Oxford for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance Friday. Moore is accused of possessing cocaine with intent to sell, following a traffic stop on County Road 29 in the Town of New Berlin. Moore was arraigned in the Town of North Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash bail. She is scheduled to reappear in court at a later date.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Dollar General at State Highway 12 in the Town of Norwich for a reported Robbery. An individual entered the store, stole merchandise, and displayed a large knife. The Sheriff’s Office located the suspect in a wooded area near the Norwich Motor Lodge, he was taken into custody, a large knife and stolen merchandise was recovered. 21-year-old Collin Berry was charged with 1st degree Robbery & Criminal Possession of a Weapon, he was arraigned in the Town of North Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $10,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to appear in the Town of North Norwich Court at a later date.

61-year-old Gerald Porter of Binghamton was found guilty today in Broome County Court of burglarizing the apartment of a deceased resident’s body was removed. The jury convicted Porter for 2nd-degree burglary & criminal possession of stolen property, he faces sentencing on September 7th.

65-Year-old Robert Doggert of Tennessee has been sentenced to 19 years in a federal prison, on charges of solicitation to commit a civil rights act, & solicitation to commit arson. Doggert was arrested for recruiting people to travel to the Islamberg community near Hancock, to burn down buildings and commit acts of terrorism against the inhabitants.

Area Congresswoman Claudia Tenney received a disturbing email threat Wednesday referencing the Virginia shooting of Congressman Steve Scalise & others at a softball practice. Tenney said that she has received several threats since taking office and has turned them over to Capital Police, but Wednesday she received one stating “one down, 216 to go”

The 4 County Library System announced the launch of their new Bookmobile, which will be providing full library service to those who live in rural areas without close access to a library. The new Bookmobile is a 33-foot truck built by Medical Coaches in Oneonta, it will visit many sites in the Tri-County area, with monthly stops in Wells Bridge, Downsville, and Fly Creek. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies investigated a 1-car accident Tuesday evening on State Highway 206 in the Town of Tompkins that resulted in a Walton woman being air-lifted to the hospital. The driver of the vehicle, 30-year-old Joshua Crisell of Walton lost control of his vehicle when he reached for an item in the vehicle causing the vehicle to run off the roadway, strike a number of small trees and overturn. A passenger in the vehicle, 29-year-old MistyBlue Crisell, sustained back and head injuries and was airlifted to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City. Crisell was charged with failure to keep hands on the steering wheel, moving from lane unsafely and operating a motor vehicle out of license class, he would face action in Town of Tompkins Court at a later date.

Oneonta Police Detectives along with State Police and the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, served a search warrant at 5106 State Highway 23, in the town of Oneonta, regarding the sale and distribution of controlled substances. Police arrested 31 year old Aaron Willey of Oneonta on 2 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance Police discovered powdered cocaine, & $2,472 in cash, Willey was arraigned at the Town of Oneonta Court and remanded to the Otsego County Jail.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies and members of the Delhi Fire Department and Emergency Squad responded to an off-road, All Terrain Vehicle accident on Tuesday night at Elk Creek Road. 75-year-old Peter Clark of Delhi left his farm shortly after 6:00 PM, to search for lost livestock in a wooded area when his four wheeled ATV rolled over, trapping Clark’s legs beneath the vehicle. Clark was located in the woods; he was extricated by Delhi Fire and EMS personnel and was transported to O’Connor Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
