Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 30 year old Anthony Colella of Long Beach Wednesday, on charges of uninspected motor vehicle, failure to keep right, unlicensed operator, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of marijuana following a traffic stop in the Town of Middletown. Deputies allege Colella of operating a motor vehicle with 3 active suspensions of his license and for possessing of a small quantity of marijuana which was found on Colella’s person. Colella was later arraigned in and was released on his own recognizance.

Governor Cuomo & the State DOT today announced $59.2 million for projects to pave and repair 383.9 lane miles of state roads across the Southern Tier this summer and fall. The infrastructure investment includes Paving and repair work on several sections of I-88 & I-86, plus state routes 79, 220, 12, 990L, 41, 23 & 30. The projects will be all completed this year.

State DEC Officials announced that CleanSweepNY events held in May collected a total of 75,802 pounds of potentially hazardous chemicals from 93 participants in Broome, Chenango, & other counties. CleanSweepNY is supported by approximately $2.2 million from several enforcement settlements in DEC’s Pest Management program, to promote safe, legal, and proper disposal of unwanted and obsolete pesticides and other chemicals, including elemental mercury. The collection events netted 33,663 pounds of pesticides, 15,642 pounds of school chemicals, 17,760 pounds of paint, 1,566 pounds of motor oil and other liquids, and 7 pounds of elemental mercury, as well as 132 mercury-containing devices, and 345 aerosol containers.

Several area fire companies responded Wednesday morning to the report of a fire at Pit Stop Auto at 178 Howe Lane in Afton. Owner Ron Ford said that they were burning cardboard, the fire eventually spread to a pile of used tires, and then the structure, which was a total loss. No Injuries have been reported.

State Police stepped up their traffic enforcement efforts over the July 4th holiday period beginning on Friday. Troopers focused on drivers who were speeding, distracted and exhibiting signs of impairment. During this time period, troopers issued 270 traffic tickets and arrested six people for driving while intoxicated. Notably, New York State Police only investigated one personal injury collision, which involved one of the drivers that was arrested for DWI.

The Oneonta Common Council decided last night to appoint Acting Police Chief Douglas Brenner as the chief of Oneonta Police on a permanent basis. Brenner had been the acting chief since January.
