Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond is the president of the New York State Sheriff’s Association, he held a press conference in Albany this week calling on Lawmakers to do something about the surge in attack on police officers statewide:

Sheriff DuMond said that 4 Officers in New York State have been killed in the line of duty this year already, including 2 near Syracuse last week, & he mentioned that stabbing of a Norwich Police officer recently who escaped being fatally injured, he is calling on Lawmakers to support the efforts of law enforcement with meaningful legislation before the end of the current session in June.

The DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will be held this Saturday, as they aim to prevent medication misuse and opioid addiction by encouraging the public to dispose of unneeded medications. The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force said officers executed the search warrant at 15 Corbett Avenue where Officers seized methamphetamines, crack cocaine, fentanyl and methadone, as well as items used for weighing and packaging narcotics. 41 year old Jeremy Bezek was charged with multiple counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance & criminally using drug paraphernalia, 25 year old Carter Dennison was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, both face court action shortly.

The Delaware County Chamber of Commerce will host a local contest of the National Civics Bee on Saturday, April 27, as middle schoolers strive to represent New York at the national competition in Washington, D.C. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies conducted a traffic stop for violations in the town of Middletown, Deputies arrested 28 year old Frank Mazepa of Morris for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, for driving with 3 active suspensions on his license, he was charged with several other traffic infractions, & he was directed to appear at the Town of Middletown Court at a later date to answer for the charges. Mazepa was also found to be the subject of an active violent felony arrest warrant and was turned over to the Oneonta Police Department, where he was held pending arraignment.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched on March 4th to a 1 car motor vehicle accident located on East Hubbell Hill Road, in the Town of Middletown. 25-year-old Filemon Garcia Jr., of Middletown, lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway and entered into a ditch, causing damage to private property. Following the investigation and the results of toxicology report, Deputies arrested Garcia this week for DWI, Aggravated DWI with a BAC of .18% or above, Consumption of Alcohol in a Motor vehicle, speed not reasonable and prudent, among other charges, he was released & was ordered to appear in the Town of Middletown Court at a later date.

Chenango County Public Health reported 3213 total COVID cases since the beginning of the pandemic & 57 since Friday. They reported 116 Active Cases today with 4 hospitalized and 494 Active Quarantines & 73 deaths.

The Broome County Department of Health reported 120 new COVID cases with 2 more COVID deaths on Friday. Broome County has had a total of 333 deaths from the Virus; they have had 17,311 cases since the pandemic began.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Department reported that on Saturday, on Prescription Drug Take Back Day, they collected 1,920 pounds of old & unused medications. The event is scheduled every year to keep the unused medications out of the waste stream, but also to keep them from getting into the wrong hands.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is urging restaurant owners to apply for a $28.6 billion federal restaurant relief program. The restaurant grant program will let restaurant owners apply for funds to cover coronavirus-related losses; the maximum grant for per restaurant is $5 million.

State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker announced that the state will move forward with using the 1 dose Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine. The vaccines were re-examined after 8 women out of 8 Million doses developed blood clots, with 1 death reported.

 “Friendly’s Restaurants” announced that they have closed 14 upstate New York restaurants.  Several Broome County locations closed, their Oneonta location at 377 Main Street is expected to close shortly, and other locations that are closing are located in Syracuse, Rochester, and Oswego.  The Friendly’s at 561 Harry L Drive in Johnson will remain open.

State Troopers arrested 21-year-old Kayla Vanderpool from Adams for Driving while ability impaired by drugs, plus 14 other traffic citations Thursday after a pursuit through multiple jurisdictions.  State Police were dispatched to a 911 call reporting a wrong-way driver traveling west in the eastbound lanes of State Route 17 in the city of Binghamton.   Vanderpool continued through Vestal, she hit another vehicle, & the pursuit came to a conclusion in Owego where Vanderpool struck a patrol vehicle and was taken into custody.  Vanderpool was taken to Binghamton General Hospital for minor injuries.  The investigation is still on-going.

Nauman Hussein was indicted last week on 40 felony counts relating to last October’s crash of a modified Limousine that crashed in Schoharie, killing 20 people.  The indictment charges claim that Hussein put a vehicle on the road that failed its inspection one month before the accident, and hired the driver who was not licensed to operate the vehicle. He will be arraigned on the charges on Wednesday.
