Oneonta Police are investigating the circumstances regarding A SUNY Oneonta student found on a city Street on Thursday morning. SUNY Officials released a statement this afternoon stating that the unidentified male student was found unconscious at an off-campus location early Thursday morning and transported to Bassett hospital for exposure to extreme cold, the student died at Bassett Thursday evening. The Oneonta Police Department is investigating the incident, anyone with information can call Oneonta Police at (607) 432-1111.

The Otsego County Health Department reported 81 new cases of COVID 19 Thursday, with 8 hospitalized & no new deaths. The 7 day Rolling average positivity rate was 13.5%, Otsego County Health Department officials reminds local residents that the County & The State remains under an indoor-mask mandate.

Attorney General Letitia James announced New York’s Award from the $26 billion opioid agreement with the nation’s major pharmaceutical distributors; for their roles in creating and fueling the nationwide opioid crisis. James stated that since the agreement in July, local governments have joined during the subdivision sign-on period, New York has secured the full amount available of $230 million available under the settlement agreement, to go for opioid treatment programs.

The State Senate & State Assembly may vote on their own redistricting maps based on the 2020 census in the next week, after the Independent Commission failed to narrow the maps down below 2 possibilities. The Commission was set up to avoid the legislature making up their own district lines, following voter approval in 2014 of a ban on partisan gerrymandering of district lines for the State Senate, Assembly & Congressional seats.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded January 10th, to Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton of an assault. 39-year old Daniel Johnson of Walton, allegedly assaulted another person during a Domestic Dispute, unlawfully imprisoned another, and left the location in a stolen vehicle. Deputies filed for an Arrest Warrant for Johnson, on January 20th, Binghamton Police located Johnson while conducting a traffic stop, he was arrested on the Parole Warrant, and was transported back to the Delaware County Correctional Facility. Johnson was charged with Menacing, Criminal Mischief, Assault, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation, Unlawful Imprisonment, Grand Larceny, and Criminal Mischief, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $1000 bail & remand without bail on the Parole Warrant.

Delhi Firefighters responded Wednesday evening to a fire at 161 Main Street in the village, at a homeless shelter.  4 occupants escaped without injury, the building is a total loss, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced New York State’s success in awarding $900 million in Child Care Stabilization Grants to child care programs statewide. The grants are part of a $2.3 billion package of investments in New York State’s child care industry funded by the federal American Rescue Plan Act and Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act. The Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) awarded funding to nearly 15,000 eligible child care providers over four months, from August through November.  Over 219 Million Dollars will go to the Southern Tier Counties child care programs.

New York Attorney General Letitia James today released the following statement after a jury voted that Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc. and its affiliates were liable for the public nuisance charges made by New York state in its opioid trial in State Supreme Court:  A subsequent trial will be held to determine how much Teva and others will be required to pay.   Attorney General James has already negotiated deals with Johnson & Johnson, McKesson, Cardinal Health, and Amerisource Bergen for a global value of approximately $26 billion, the cases against Mallinckrodt and Rochester Drug Cooperative are now moving separately through U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

The Center for Agricultural Development & Entrepreurships Farmer’ Survey deadline is tomorrow.  The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and allows farmers to identify their top food system priorities.  The survey represents the 2nd phase of CADE’s data collection process, from 17 focus groups which were conducted between March and October in partnership with Cornell University, SUNY Cobleskill, and other researchers. The City of Oneonta Police Department is investigating a bank robbery at the NBT bank at 1 Wall Street Wednesday at about 11:00 AM.  A single male suspect demanded the teller to hand over an undisclosed amount of money, he  is described a 5’8 to 6’ tall, wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt, dark colored pants and is about 220-250 pounds with a heavy build.  He was last seen walking in an easterly direction on Wall Street.  The public is encouraged to contact the Oneonta Police Detectives with any additional information at (607) 432-1111.

Governor Hochul signed into law a bill which allows for New York air ambulances to carry blood products. The measure followed an injury of Travis Flanagan in Greene, who was severely injured & was airlifted from Greene to Syracuse in an air ambulance based in Pennsylvania that carried blood on board; New York was the only state in the nation whose regulations prohibited medical helicopters from carrying blood.  Flanagan appeared at a press conference in Binghamton yesterday with Assembly members Donna Lupardo & Joe Angelino & State Senator Fred Akshar.

Assemblyman Joe Angelino is urging aspiring nurses to apply for the Nurses for Our Future Scholarship. The scholarship will pay for the tuition of 1,000 new or current health care workers working toward earning an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing at a 2 or 4-year New York state public college or university. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies conducted traffic stop Sunday on a vehicle operated by 59-year old Karen Bright-Ackerman of Kortright, for crossing into the oncoming lane of travel. Deputies determined that Bright-Ackerman’s Driver’s License was suspended due to a failure to pay a driver responsibility assessment and her vehicle’s registration was suspended due to an insurance lapse. Bright-Ackerman was charged with Failure to Keep Right, Unlicensed Operator, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended Registration, she was released on traffic tickets and directed to appear at the Kortright Town Court at a later date to answer the charges.

Governor Kathy Hochul plans to get about 3 million testing kits for COVID 19 to school district across the state, by the end of this week. Vaccination rates among school children ages 5 to 11 remain low, the goal of the testing kits program is to keep children attending schools in person, by regular testing for COVID 19 in schools.

The State DEC announced that the State’s new catch-and-release trout stream season begins on October 16th, as part of the DEC’s Statewide Trout Stream Management Plan.  The new season runs until March 31st of next year & requires anglers to use only artificial lures and immediately release trout they catch. Chobani and the Utica based non-profit Compassion Coalition donated & delivered $29,000 worth of food and supplies to help 4 local backpack programs in Central New York last week.  Chobani distributed more than 1,200 cases of their products to the Edmeston Central School, Unadilla Valley School District, Sherburne-Earlville Central School, and Norwich City Schools, to restock school food pantries, which helps to feed more than 200 children and their families throughout the year.  Chobani also announced that they are sending 200,000 Chobani products to those affected by Hurricane Ida; this follows a recent delivery of 100,000 products to Afghan evacuees in temporary housing across the country, and the US servicemen and women supporting them.

State Police arrested 24 year old David Kemp of Eaton for using a fake COVID 19 Vaccination card, after his employer turned him in.  Kemp could face 7 years in prison after being charged with possession of a forged instrument & the unauthorized use of a government agency’s seal on the fake card makes it a federal crime.

A.M. NEWS TUESDAY 10-5-21

State Police have identified the deceased individual shot by a Walton Police Officer as 66 year old Paul Weeden of Walton.  On Monday Morning, an officer from the Walton Police Department was dispatched to a mental health call on Griswold Street, the officer made contact with Weeden, who pointed what was believed to be a gun at the officer, the officer retreated, Weeden followed & ignored multiple commands to drop his weapon, he again pointed the suspected gun at the officer, who fired his weapon and struck Weeden.  The officer called for EMS and rendered emergency aid, Weeden was pronounced dead at the scene.  The investigation is continuing.

Dylan Robinson was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison in Otsego County Court on Monday, for the murder of his father, Kenneth Robinson in Worcester in October 2019.  Robinson & several others were accused of going to Kenneth Robinson’s home to steal money & marijuana, it escalated to the killing of the elder Robinson & attempting to burn the house down to cover up the crimes.  Robinson was convicted after a 3 day trial in June.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced State agencies, cities, towns, and Indian Tribal governments can now apply for federal funding  to assist with mitigation projects designed to strengthen resiliency against future national disasters. The application period is open through November 30th using FEMA GO online. Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 23 year old Korey Crandall of Sherburne on a Bench Warrant issued out of the City of Norwich Court. Deputies located Crandall in the Town of Sherburne and was in possession of methamphetamines. Crandall was issued an appearance ticket for Possession of a Controlled Substance and was later turned over to the Norwich City Police Department.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that $89 million in child care provider stabilization grant funds have been disbursed. More than 10,600 of New York State’s 18,000 eligible child care providers have applied for Child Care Stabilization Grant funding. To date, child care providers have requested $585 million of the available $1.1 billion in federal funding. The New York State Office of Children and Family Services is administering the funds.

The State Fair is scrapping its traditional “Governor’s Day” event, as Governor Cuomo is resigning 4 days after the Fair starts this Friday in Syracuse. Traditionally, the state’s Governor does a ceremonial ribbon cutting at the start of every State Fair, Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul said that she plans to attend the State Fair at some point; she becomes Governor on August 24th.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s office arrested 33 year old Brian Marshall of Camden after allegedly stabbing 5 people Monday afternoon after an altercation in the Goodlife Bar of Camden where he used a sharp metal pick to stab the 5 victims. Marshall was taken into custody in the bar’s parking lot after deputies deployed a Taser. None of the injuries were life threatening. Marshall was charged with 5 counts of 2nd degree Assault, Marshall was also arrested by Otsego County Sheriff’s Office Sunday for 3rd & 4th degree Grand Larceny and several traffic tickets after failure to comply with officers trying to stop him in a stolen vehicle, he was issued appearance tickets after his Sunday arrest, Marshall is waiting for court action on all the charges & more charges may be forthcoming.

State Police and local law enforcement will be increasing patrols to target speeding from tomorrow through August 8th.  Statistics from the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research at the University at Albany’s reported that unsafe speed was a contributing factor in 314 fatal crashes in 2020, compared to 230 fatal crashes in 2019, which was a 36% increase. The 314 fatal crashes last year resulted in 365 deaths including drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians.  The enforcement campaign is supported by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, during last year’s Speed Awareness Week; law enforcement throughout the state issued 21,428 tickets for speeding and 30,273 tickets for other vehicle and traffic law violations, such as impaired and distracted driving.

Governor Cuomo today announced that New York State will administer nearly $1.1 billion in federal funding directly to child care providers to help stabilize the industry and enable more parents to return to the workplace fulltime. The funding is available through the American Rescue Plan Act and the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act; funding applications will open Wednesday, August 4.  Today’s announcement gives child care providers time to prepare and gather relevant materials needed for their application.

Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond was presented with a Certificate of Accreditation for the Sheriff’s Corrections Division at a meeting of the Delaware County Board of Supervisors in Delhi on Wednesday.  The Accreditation of the Corrections Division of the Sheriff’s Office finalizes the full and complete accreditation throughout all Divisions of the Sheriff’s Office; the most current accreditation stated that the corrections facility met or exceeded all 166 components for accreditation.

State Senator Peter Oberacker today announced legislation he sponsored designating baseball as New York’s official state sport has been signed into law by Governor Cuomo.    This bill was proposed by a Cooperstown Elementary School 4th grade class; Cooperstown is the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame and is believed to be the birthplace of the sport.  New York State has previously designated an official gemstone, fossil, shell, bush, salt water fish and reptile.

Governor Cuomo signed legislation designating a portion of State Route 13 in Madison County as the “Assemblyman William ‘Bill’ Magee Memorial Highway.”  Magee served in the state Assembly from 1990 until 2018, much of that tenure, he served as the Chairman of the Assembly Agriculture Committee, he passed away on December 24, 2020, he was 81.

This week Delaware County Public Health reported 21 new cases of COVID 19; previously there have been a total of 8 breakthrough infections since June 1st.  Delaware County has 26 active cases, 2 Hospitalized & 36 quarantined, officials said that they have not received information from the state Department of Health that the Delta Variant is present in Delaware County, which is classified by the CDC as more likely to spread, cause reinfection or cause severe illness, as well as reduce vaccine effectiveness.  Currently only 47% of Delaware County residents are fully vaccinated for COVID-19, Unvaccinated individuals should get vaccinated and continue to wear a mask until they are fully vaccinated.

State Police responded to a crash involving 2 vehicles at the intersection of State Route 28 and James F. Lettis Highway in the town of Oneonta at about noon on Sunday July 4th.  A motorcycle operated by 29 year old Anthony Masi of Otego was on State Highway 28 when he struck a Chevy Traverse that was on James F. Lettis Highway.   Masi was transported to A.O Fox Memorial Hospital & was later transported by LifeNet to Albany Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.   The operator of the Traverse was not injured.  State Police revealed that Masi’s motorcycle was recently reported as stolen. The investigation is on-going.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli’s office reported that Chenango County’s local sales tax collections were up over 21% in the first 5 months of 2021, following similar good News about Delaware County.  Sales tax collections across the state were up significantly in the first 2 quarters, New Yorkers as a whole were making home improvements, spending more with local merchants, and the state is collecting a growing amount of tax collections from online retailers and at the gas pumps.

Village of Sidney Police Department officers responded to a residence on River Street on June 13th for a report of an assault, officers found the victim bleeding from a laceration to his head, the suspect fled the scene, and allegedly used a shovel to attack the victim.  Sidney Police Department arrested 46 year old John Hedman of  Unadilla, he was charged with 2nd degree Assault & Criminal possession of a weapon, he was  arraigned in Village of Sidney Court where he was released on his own recognizance to appear back in court on a later date.

The Unadilla Valley Central School District will host a 5K run/walk at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, July 17, for 14 year old Cooper Hine, who is a Unadilla Valley 8th Grader, who was seriously injured in an ATV crash in New Berlin recently.  Another fundraising chicken barbecue and Chinese auction will follow at the South New Berlin Fire Department on July 17th.  Hine is hospitalized at the Upstate Medical center in Syracuse.

State Police responded Saturday to an ATV crash in the town of Davenport.   35-year-old Raina Andrews of Davenport was operating the vehicle, when it exited the roadway, struck a ditch and she was ejected.   Andrews was transported by LifeNet to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse with serious injuries.  The investigation is on-going.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Walton resident June 19th on Delaware Street in the Village of Walton.  Deputies observed a speeding vehicle traveling north on Delaware Street, they stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as 28-year old Kassondra  Pierce of Walton,  A routine DMV inquiry revealed that Pierce’s driving privileges and vehicle registration were suspended due to an insurance lapse.  Pierce was charged with unlicensed operation of a vehicle, speeding, operating an uninspected motor vehicle as well as other charges, her vehicle was towed from the scene & she was released to appear in the Village of Walton Court on a later date.
