The 61st General Clinton Canoe Regatta was held this past weekend, over 1500 paddlers. In the Men’s NYMCRA Stock class, cousins Seth MacArthur of Staten Island & 1st time paddler Austin Henchey of Otego won the race by over 7 minutes, WCDO’s Craig Stevens asked them about this year’s Race:

It was a dog fight for 2nd place in the 4 person pro class with just 5 second separating them from the 3rd place team. The Local New York Team of Bob Wisse, Larry Harrison, Jeff Shultis & Bob Zaveral teamed up again for the race. Shultis said it was a tough race:

Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced that 43 year old Jeremie Hoyt of Davenport was sentenced to 20 years in state prison for his conviction of Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child. Between January and August of 2019, Hoyt engaged in at least 2 sexual acts with a child under 13 years old, he was sentenced to 20 years of in jail followed by 10 years of post-release supervision, he was also ordered to submit a DNA sample to the State DNA data-bank, he was ordered to pay a $1,000 crime victim’s fee & he must register as a sex offender after he is released from prison.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office responded to a small plane crash near Norwich Sunday afternoon. The pilot was pronounced dead at the scene & was the only occupant of the plane, the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office said the pilot was the only occupant of the plane. They were pronounced dead the scene. The investigation has been turned over to the National Safety Transportation Board.

5 municipalities in the Southern Tier were awarded the DEC Municipal Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure grant. Locally, The village of Sidney will receive more than $80,000 to install 2 fast chargers, the village of Fleischmanns will receive more than $7,500 for 2 Level 2 charging ports. The Delaware County DPW announced road work on county Routes 16 and 21 will take place in the coming weeks. Pavement rehabilitation work began today on county Route 21, from at the Walton village line heading north about 6 1/2 miles, that project will be complete by June 30. The department will begin work on county Route 16 on Monday, June 5, starting in Treadwell and progressing to state Route 10 in Fraser. that project should be completed by June 15. Drivers should expect extended delays during this work. Alternate routes are suggested.

The 61st General Clinton Canoe Regatta was held over the Memorial Day Weekend, with over 1500 paddlers ranging in age from 5 to 83, low water & the Hot Sun made things difficult for the 70 mile racers.

The 4 Person Pro Division Winners were New York Paddlers Ed Curley, Ben Schlimmer, Jake Crotser & Patrick Madden, Curley summed up the conditions to WCDO after the race:

The 4 man team beat the 2nd place canoe by about 20 minutes.

In the C1 Pro Race, Canadian Christoph Marchan also won by over 20 minutes with a time of 8:55:17, it was only his 2nd time at the Clinton Regatta, he told WCDO of his strategy:

In the 2 person pro endurance race, Canadian Steve Lajoie won for the 12th time with Michigan paddler Wes Dean, , it was his 1sty pro win, , taking home the $3,000 winning purse, they talked to WCDO’s Craig Stevens after the race:

And, the General Clinton welcomed back 28 time pro champion Serge Corbin back for his 32nd Clinton race, the 66 year old Canadian paddled in the mixed division for the 1st time, with his 31 year old partner Ev Chamberland, they spoke to Craig After the race:

Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation released its report on the death of Roger Lynch on August 6, 2021 in Franklin, which included review of radio transmissions, body-worn camera footage, and interviews. The investigation determined that a prosecutor would not be able to disprove justification beyond a reasonable doubt at trial & criminal charges against the State Trooper who shot Lynch are not warranted. On the evening of August 5th, members of several police agencies responded to a residence on Bob Holloway Road in Delhi, following reports that an individual had been shot, they learned that Lynch had shot multiple times at 1of the residents before driving away, Lynch was found at his house, he came out with a gun aimed under his chin. When the sergeant told him not to shoot himself, Lynch then leveled his shotgun on his shoulder and took aim at a trooper & 1 of the troopers fired his rifle at Lynch, who fell back into the house, where he was pronounced dead.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 22 year old Clarence Vanier of Laurens after a search warrant was executed at a residence in the Town of Laurens. Vanier was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance for a Hallucinogen, among other charges. Deputies were assisting the Oneonta Police Department with a search warrant at which time a large amount of Psilocybin mushrooms were located in the residence. Vanier was being held at the Otsego County Jail pending Central Arraignment.

The State DOT is advising motorists that the off-ramp from I-88 eastbound at Exit 2 in the Town of Fenton, will be closed from 8 pm. to 5 am. for 3 consecutive nights starting tonight through Thursday, June 1. Oneonta Police are investigating the murder of a 24-year-old Kaleb O’Neill of Oneonta Monday. Oneonta Police Department received a 911 call of a male being stabbed in the alleyway of 6 Dietz Street, O’Neill had multiple stab wounds, 1st responders administered aid, he was transported to A.O. Fox Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. State Police Forensic Identification Unit and canine unit were called to the scene and an attempt to locate the suspects was undertaken but revealed no other information. The case remains under investigation by the Oneonta Police Department & State Police BCI & Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Oneonta Police Detective Division at (607) 432-1111.

State Police responded to a report of a motorcycle that crashed on I-81 Friday. A trooper located a Harley Davidson that had crashed into a guide-rail in the town of Marathon. State Police arrested 21 year old Joseph Hayes of Middletown and 26 year old Cory Bartley of Fleischmanns for breaking a window at a synagogue in Fleischmanns, May 20th. Hayes and Bartley entered synagogue property, and Hayes threw a large rock at the building, breaking a window. Bartley also threw a rock at the building, which did not cause any damage. Hayes is charged with criminal mischief, criminal trespass, Bartley is charged with criminal mischief, Troopers issued both men appearance tickets returnable to Middletown town court on June 23.

The popular 70 mile 2 person race was a close one, the team of Andy Triebold & Steve Lajoie won their 8th race by beating 2nd place finishers Serge Corbin & Guillaume Blaise by a little under 5 minutes, but the real excitement was the sprint to the finish for the 2nd place position, where Corbin & Blaise beat local pros Trever LeFever & Ben Schlimmer of Oneonta by 3 seconds. The search for a 14-month-old boy continued today in Wayne County. Owen Hidalgo-Calderon has been missing since May 16th, his mother, Selena Hidalgo-Calderon was found dead in a wooded area last week in Sodus. Alberto Reyes has been charged with moving his girlfriend’s Selena’s body from their home, he is in Police custody, but the infant is still missing.

New York State ranked 4th nationwide in credit card debt at $58.2 billion in 2017, according to a report released today by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Although credit card debt declined significantly in the state from 2008 through 2013, the trend reversed in 2014 as per capita balances rose by more than 14% through 2017 to $3,710, nearly 20% above the national average. DiNapoli said that the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau provides advice and resources to help consumers deal credit card issues at consumerfinance.gov.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputy’s arrested 30 year old Connie Zachow of Franklin for 2nd degree Assault, obstruction of governmental administration, resisting arrest, escape and 2 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, after she allegedly struck a Deputy in Franklin. Zachow was arraigned at the Town of Sidney Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 secured bond, pending action in Town of Franklin court at a later date.

The Chenango County DPW announced that they will close County Route 37 between County Road 36 & Keach Road in the town of Guilford, on Tuesday May 29th. Chenango County Sheriff’s department arrested 2 Town of Pharsalia residents following an investigation into stolen property. Chenango County Sheriff’s Detectives and Deputies performed a search warrant on a property in the Town of Pharsalia; they discovered numerous items that were reported stolen, along with cultivated marihuana. 38 year old Todd Jackson was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, criminal possession of a controlled substance & Unlawful growing of cannabis. Jackson was arraigned in the Town of McDonough Court and released on his own recognizance. 34 year old Chelsea Evanoff was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful growing of cannabis, she was released on an appearance ticket to appear in the Town of Pharsalia Court on a later date.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Department arrested 36 year old Zane Marvin of Pitcher for criminal contempt and criminal mischief. Marvin was charged following an investigation into a complaint of an order of protection violation, after Marvin allegedly went to the residence of the protected party and kicked in the front door causing damage to the door. Marvin was arraigned in the Town of Pitcher Court where he was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $500 cash bail.

The action is being brought by 3 people who say they may face questions on whether to seek end-of-life medical assistance, as well as four physicians and a PhD nurse from End of Life Choices New York. 5 states have legalized a role for physicians to aid in patient suicides; they are Oregon, Colorado, Washington, California and Vermont.

Binghamton Police arrested 34-year-old Edward McCray of Binghamton, following a domestic disturbance Saturday. McCray is accused of menacing his neighbors with a sharp object and was driving an SUV erratically, Police reported that McCray attempted to flee in his vehicle as officers arrived, striking 2 parked vehicles, and intentionally ramming 2 police vehicles, before driving a short distance & overturning his vehicle into a house at 6 Macon Street. McCray exited his overturned car and tried to run on foot, but police apprehended him & charged him with DWI, Attempted Aggravated Assault of a Police Officer, Menacing, and Resisting Arrest. No injuries were reported.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 34 year old Cherie Ebert of East Branch on numerous charges stemming from a report of an underage house party on May 20th in the Town of Hancock where alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs were alleged to have been used and consumed by minors. Deputies charged Ebert with 15 counts of unlawfully dealing with a child, criminal nuisance, and 2 counts of endangering the welfare of a child, A 16 year old was also arrested and released on an appearance ticket for unlawful possession of marijuana. Ebert was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $500 bail.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 25 year old Steven Smith Jr. of Franklin Friday, for DWI, driving while ability impaired by drugs, failure to keep right, making an unsafe lane change, unlawful possession of marijuana, and criminal possession of a controlled substance. The arrest followed a 1-car accident on State Highway 357 in the Town of Franklin. Smith was later released on tickets returnable to Franklin Town Court at a later date.

The 55th running of the General Clinton Canoe Regatta was held this past weekend, with the World famous 70-mile races from Cooperstown to Bainbridge held yesterday. Canadians Steve Lajoie & Guillaume Blaise taking 1st place in the 33 boat Pro race. Craig Stevens spoke to the pair after the race:

Chenango County Sheriff’s Department arrested 46 year old Shawn Springett of Sidney for 2nd degree Burglary and Criminal Mischief. Deputies arrested Springett following an investigation in the Town of Afton, after it was found that he allegedly entered a residence without permission and broke the homeowners belongings. Springett faces court action shortly.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 24-year-old Troy Ladlee of Delhi, for 1 count each of Driving While Ability Impaired Drugs, Criminal Possession of Controlled Substance, and Criminal Possession of a Hypodermic Instrument. Deputies responded to the report of a vehicle off the road and into a ditch, in the Town of Davenport. Ladlee was found unresponsive in the driver’s seat, after allegedly overdosing on heroin, he was administered Narcan at the scene, he was subsequently arraigned at the Town of Davenport Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $1,000 cash bail or $1,500.00 bond, he will appear before the Town of Davenport Court at a later date.

The state’s ban on burning has ended but the DEC reminds residents to check for local laws & regulations regarding burning. Residents of towns with fewer than 20,000 residents may burn brush and tree limbs unless prohibited by local law. Residents in “fire towns” must obtain a permit. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 18-year-old Ben Lane of Delhi, Wednesday on 4 counts of endangering the welfare of a child and 3 counts of unlawfully dealing with a child. Lane is accused of transporting 3 children in a motor vehicle to Delhi from Walton without notifying the parents, & allegedly engaged in sexual contact with a child under 17 years of age, and permitted the 3 children to remain on the premises where activity involving marijuana was maintained. Lane was arraigned & was remanded to the Delaware County Jail without bail pending future court action.

The New York State Assembly approved 9 bills last week to reform and modernize New York’s outdated election system. If they become law, the bills would allow early voting and “no-excuse” absentee ballots, combine some primary elections, and allow online registration and automatic transfer of registrations when voters move within the state. Similar bills have passed the Assembly in previous years but have not made it through the state Senate. Last year, 1 in 3 candidates for the New York Legislature ran unopposed.

Governor Cuomo visited the State Correction Officer Monday, who was injured by an exploding package left by his mailbox Sunday morning in Oneida County. 1 of 2 men, who murdered 2 area convenience store clerks in the same week in September of 1982, has been denied bail. 66-year-old Thomas Marlowe will continue to serve 23 years to life in prison after being convicted for murder, robbery and perjury in connection with the killings of 22-year-old Christine Kamide of Binghamton and 19-year-old James Wilcox of Afton. 62-year-old Herman Neu was the gunman in those killing, he will not be eligible for parole until 2033.

A new Siena Poll out Today shows that 60% of New Yorkers believe Governor Cuomo is an ethical public official. Cuomo’s top aide Joe Percoco and lobbyist Todd Howe are both under investigation currently with possible corruption involving the Governor’s Buffalo Billion Development plan. The poll also found that more than half of voters have the most trust in Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. The Siena Poll surveyed 825 registered New York voters, and had a margin of error of 3.9 percentage points.

The Vestal Police Department has identified the victim of a fatal crash early Friday morning. 56-year-old Paul Rymer of Owego was killed in a crash at about 4:00 AM on Route 17 in Vestal. Vestal Police & State Police reported that a tractor-trailer driven by 54-year-old Jacek Swiston of Vestal, attempted to make a U-turn through the median from the westbound lanes, when he pulled into the path Rymer’s pickup truck, which struck the trailer. Rymer was killed instantly. The investigation is continuing by the Broome County District Attorney’s office.

State Police responded to a Delaware County 911 report of a fatal ATV accident off of Apex Road in the Town of Tompkins. Troopers observed 36 year old Keith Stratton of Bellmore, New York deceased in a shallow creek by an overturned ATV. Troopers reported thar he had been at a family party at a home on Apex Road when he decided to take a ride on an ATV, without a helmet. Troopers beleive that he failed to make a right turn and overturned in a nearby creek & was killed on impact. Alcohol was a factor in the accident, he was pronoucned deceased at the scene.

Governor Cuomo today announced that law enforcement agencies in 17 counties participating in the state’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination initiative would receive $13.3 million to target gun violence and save lives. The initiative requires the use of proven strategies to reduce shootings and firearm-related homicides in communities served by 20 police departments in those counties. Locally, The Binghamton Police Department and Broome County District Attorney’s Office and Sheriff’s Office will share $393,944.

State Police arrested 27 year old Jonathan Robinson of Oneonta for Resisting Arrest, 2 counts of Criminal Mischief & 3 counts of Harassment. The arrest resulted from a complaint of someone damaging a vehicle and making threats at a residence on County Highway 11 in the Town of Laurens. Robinson is accused of damaging 2 vehicles, threatening people from outside & physically resisting arrest. Robinson was arraigned in the Town of Laurens Court and remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $200 cash bail pending future court action.

Ganesh Ramsaran pleaded “Not Guilty” to a grand jury indictment for 2^nd degree murder this morning in Chenango county court in Norwich.   Bail was increased to $500,000 cash bail or $1 million bond, Ramsaran was returned to the Chenango County Jail following this morning’s court action.  Ramsaran is accused of killing his wife Jennifer last December, her body was found in a wooded area in February in Pharsalia.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies, acting on a complaint from security officers at Covidien Healthcare in Hobart, arrested a former Covidien employee for the theft and possession of Hydrocodone tablets from that manufacturer.  26-year-old Wayne Morse of Hobart was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Petty Larceny and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property.  Morse was issued Appearance Tickets in the Town of Stamford Court on June 11^th.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 19-year-old Renee Towndrow for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.  The Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division and City of Norwich Police arrested Towndrow following a traffic stop in the City of Norwich; she was found to be in possession of a Narcotic. Towndrow is scheduled to appear in the City of Norwich Court at a later date.

Canoe racers from 22 states and Canada descended on Bainbridge to compete in the 51^st general Clinton Canoe Regatta, pro paddlers Andy Triebold & Steve Lajoie won their 6^th straight pro race, and came within 19 seconds of breaking the record for the fastest time.  First time Clinton participant Frederick Blaise from Quebec took 1^st place in the 1-man pro race, he told WCDO’s Craig Stevens what he thought about his 1st experience at the general Clinton race:

2^nd place C-1 Pro finisher Nick Walton of Michigan said that it was a tough race with the 26-year-old Canadian:

Blaise beat Walton by just 6 seconds in a sprint for the finish line.  Over 1200 paddlers competed in the 4-day regatta.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 39 year old Scott Gaynor of Portlandville on 2 counts of felony criminal possession of marijuana, criminal possession of a controlled substance, aggravated operation of a motor vehicle, & operating a motor vehicle without an ignition interlock device.  Deputies confiscated more than 12 pounds of marijuana from Gaynor’s truck & home, as well as $15,000 in cash, a scale, and plastic bags used for packaging and 10 hyrdrocodone tablets.  Gaynor was arraigned in the Town of Milford Court & was sent to the Otsego County Jail on $15,000 cash bail.

State Police at Norwich arrested 21-year-old Jeffrey Montgomery of South New Berlin for Driving While Intoxicated with a BAC result of .21%, well than twice the legal limit.  The arrest resulted from a traffic stop on State Route 8 in Guilford; Montgomery was issued tickets returnable in the Town of Guilford Court on May 23^rd.

The fifth annual bicycle ride for benefit of Catskill Area Hospice & Palliative Care will be held on Sunday May 26th starting in Margaretville.  The Tour de Pepacton is sponsored by the Catskill Mountain Cycling Club and the MARK Project; the race features two choices of distance, 25 around the reservoir, or 60 miles of challenging terrain.  Registration is available at USACycling.org, and click on “clubs.” scroll down until you see “Tour de Pepacton.” More information is available at 607 326-4734.
