Sidney & Several other Fire Departments responded to a house fire 2 Pearl Street East, at about 6:00 PM Monday Night, Sidney Fire Chief John Gilmore told WCDO News about the fire:

Chief Gilmore said that the cause fire is under investigation by Sidney Fire Department as well as County & State Fire investigators. This Morning, Sidney Police Chief Eric Oliver told WCDO News that the deceased from the Pearl Street East Fire has been identified as 72 year old Juanita Meredith.

The Susquehanna SPCA & the Otsego County Sheriff’s Department responded to the Town of Laurens for the report of a possible dog-abandonment case. Deputies discovered 5 dogs deceased in garbage bags and 4 who appeared to have abandoned, the 4 were removed & are currently being cared for at the Susquehanna SPCA, the 5 deceased animals were brought to Cornell University for forensic examinations. The Sheriff’s Office is looking for the owner of the dogs, the investigation is continuing. Delaware County Sheriff’s office arrested 45- year-old James Simmons of Canandaigua for DWI and other charges following a traffic stop on February 11th. Deputies were patrolling on State Highway 17 in the Town of Colchester and observed a vehicle without a front license plate, a traffic stop was conducted & Simmons was charged with DWI, Aggravated DWI, Aggravated Unlicensed Operator and Open Container of an alcoholic beverage, Simmons was released on tickets returnable to the Town of Colchester Court at a later date to answer the charges.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 18 yr old Arianna Blazek of Queens for driving while ability impaired by drugs. On December 11th, Deputies responded to a one car motor vehicle accident on Scotch Mountain Road in the Town of Delhi, Deputies determined that Blazek was impaired by drugs at the time of the accident. Deputies arrested Blazek last week following the results of a blood test, for driving while ability impaired by drugs, Speed not reasonable and prudent and unsafe tires, she was released on tickets returnable to the Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

State Police responded early Monday morning to a domestic dispute at 10 Debra Lee Drive, Apalachin. Troopers and EMS personnel provided lifesaving treatment to an injured male and female at the scene. The female died as a result of injuries sustained during the domestic dispute. The injured male was transported to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, where he currently remains in stable condition. This incident remains under investigation.

Susquehanna SPCA announced 2 programs in October made possible by grants from the ASPCA in partnership with Subaru. Five Star Subaru in Oneonta will donate $100 for every dog or cat adopted from the shelter, On Wednesday October 11 and on October 25, a special low-cost clinic supported by a $4,000 ASPCA grant will make spay or neuter procedures available for dogs of income-qualified individuals at a cost of $100 per dog. State Police and Emergency crews responded to a crash on I-88 eastbound in Colesville between exits 5 and 6 yesterday afternoon. An investigation revealed that a pick-up truck was pulling vehicles on a trailer, the operator lost control and rolled the vehicles, blocking both lanes. Some traffic was able to pass on the shoulder before the Interstate was shut down and travelers were re-routed off exit 5 to State Highway 7 then back on to I-88 at exit 6. The operator was a 51-year-old male of Elmira, He was treated on scene but did not wish to be transported to a hospital.

State police reported that 82 year old Lorena Mayes of Norwich was killed from a 2-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon in the town of North Norwich. Police reported that Mayes was operating her vehicle at County Highway 32 and State Highway 12, she pulled out into the path of an SUV traveling north on Route 12. Mayes was transported to Chenango Hospital, but did not survive. A 91-year-old passenger in the Mayes vehicle was taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both occupants of the SUV were taken to Basset Hospital in Cooperstown with non-life-threatening injuries.

The State Department of Labor announced that the number of private sector jobs in New York State increased over the month by 4,900, to 8,252,700 in August. The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held constant at 3.9% in August, New York’s labor force participation rate increased to 61.5% in August, highest level since 2013.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Monday to a 911 call of a pedestrian-train accident in the Town of Union. The pedestrian, 33 year old Joey Rosa of Endwell was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives found that Rosa had been known to frequent the area and was on the tracks as the train approached. The conductor of the train attempted to signal multiple times to get Rosa’s attention, but Rosa did not move off the tracks. The engineer was unable to stop the train, and at Rosa was struck and killed. Investigators have ruled the incident an accident.

The State Department of Labor released the results of its 2023 Workforce Development Survey, and workers continue to say that flexibility in their job is the number one priority, while attracting new employees and retaining current workers remain the top challenges for businesses. New Yorkers who receive SNAP assistance will get some more help during the month of February. Governor Kathy Hochul is announcing New Yorkers will get at least the maximum level of food benefits. Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced that 51 year old Charles Wise of Grand Gorge was convicted for DWI in the Town of Roxbury Court. The charge followed an investigation into a motor vehicle crash on State Highway 20, in Roxbury on September 1, 2022. Wise was sentenced to a 1-year conditional discharge, and his driver’s license was revoked for 6 months, he must also install and maintain an ignition interlock device in any motor vehicle he owns or operates for the next 12 months & he was ordered to pay a $500 fine, and to attend a victim impact panel.

State Police responded to a 1 vehicle rollover collision on Hoben Road in the Town of Oxford. The Investigation revealed that a pickup truck operated by 18 year old Ayden Strong of Norwich, failed to negotiate a sharp corner on Hoben Road and overturned, 18 year old Taylor Demuth of Norwich was partially ejected and pronounced deceased on scene. Two other occupants of the vehicle received minor, non-life-threatening injuries. State Police reported that the vehicle was uninsured, unregistered, and Strong was not licensed. The investigation is continuing.

Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced that 41 year old Clifton Kirk of Summit, pleaded guilty in Delaware County Court to Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. Kirk was operating a motor vehicle in excess of the speed limit on I-88 in Sidney on October 23rd 2021, Kirk was indicted by the Delaware County Grand Jury, he appeared in County Court Monday and pleaded guilty. The anticipated sentence will also require that the defendant’s license be revoked for 12 months, and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine, $300 surcharge, $125 crime victim fee, and a $50 DNA fee.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 27 year old Brandon Morse of Edmeston twice on February 7th. Morse was charged with Possession of a Forged Instrument, 3rd degree Grand Larceny & 2 counts of Petty larceny, following an investigation in to a report a stolen check that was cashed in the amount of $3,500 at a local bank, he allegedly stole the check from a business and conspired with others to cash the check. Morse is also accused of stealing the sign for the same local business which was later recovered. Morse was arrested also for Aggravated Harassment following an investigation in to a report of threatening messages being sent to another person, containing threats of harm to the victim and a family member. Morse is being held in the Otsego County Correctional Facility pending future court action in Towns of Burlington & Town of Edmeston Court

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies observed a vehicle traveling on State Highway 28 in the Town of Delhi, crossing over the double yellow line’s multiple times, they conducted a traffic stop, they identified the driver as 30-year-old Carmine Yonnone of Delhi, whose driver’s license was suspended. Yonnone was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Failing to Turn in License to DMV, Moving from a lane unsafely, Unauthorized Sticker and Possession of an open alcoholic Container within a motor vehicle, he will appear in the Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

State Police are seeking the public’s assistance in locating 21 year old Judy Benjamin of Nineveh, she was last seen at her residence on Thorn Hill Road in Nineveh on February 5, She was wearing a green sweatshirt and sweatpants. Benjamin is white, 5’4” and weighs approximately 100 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. Anyone with information is asked to contact New York State Police at (607) 561-7400.

State Police investigated a three vehicle collision involving a State Police vehicle in the Town of Middletown on State Highway 30. The Trooper and one vehicle operator were treated for minor injuries. The third vehicle operator was not injured. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced $100 million in State funding has been released to support the renewal of State roadways impacted by extreme weather. The funding supports repaving projects at 64 locations, totaling almost 520 lane miles of pavement. In the Southern Tier Region, Projects include $1.5 million to resurface Route 12 in the Town of Chenango, $1.3 million to resurface Route 206 in the Towns of Coventry and Bainbridge, & $1.5 million to resurface Route 97 in the Towns of Fremont and Hancock.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that Johnnie Hardwick of Binghamton pleaded guilty to Attempted Robbery, in Broome County Court. Hardwick admitted that on October 21st 2022, he entered Weis Markets on Pennsylvania Avenue in Binghamton and stole merchandise, when confronted by a store employee Hardwick pulled out a large knife threatening the worker. Hardwick was apprehended by the Binghamton Police Department a short time later. Hardwick had a lengthy criminal record, including for Sexual Abuse in 2011 and Attempted Robbery in 2002 in New York City, he will face 12 years to life in New York State prison on April 26th,

Local government sales tax collections in New York state totaled $22.1 billion in calendar year 2022, up 12.7%, or $2.5 billion, from 2021 due to strong sales statewide, according to a report released today by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. Every county saw some year-over-year growth in sales tax collections in 2022, Yates County had the strongest growth at 21.1%, followed by the counties of Lewis (14.9%), Montgomery (12.4%) and Schoharie (11.8%). State Police at Troop C conducted an Underage Drinking Initiative in Otsego County on December 21st. 14 businesses were found to be in compliance, in Worcester, Schenevus & Oneonta. During the Underage Drinking Initiative, retail establishments are checked using a trooper in plain clothes and one or several underage operative(s) who cannot lie about their age or give a fake date of birth (if asked). When asked for ID, they must show their real ID. All New York State driver’s licenses are horizontal if the license holder is over the age of 21; if the license holder is under the age of 21, they are vertical.

Delaware County Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to a report of an animal abuse in the Town of Hamden last week. The investigation revealed that the owner of the animals was 33-year-old Henry Baird of Hamden, Deputies arrested Baird for Over-driving, torturing and injuring animals; failure to provide proper sustenance, a search warrant was executed, which resulted in the seizure of Chickens, 2 Pigs, 2 Emu’s, a goat, and a Peacock, which were later secured by the Delaware Valley Humane Society. Baird was later released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear at the Town of Hamden Court at a later date to answer the charge.

The State University of New York announced that the number of students applying to their school increased from roughly 97,000 applicants last year to over 204,000 from last year. SUNY implemented a new application system where Students were able to apply to up to 5 schools for free, they also launched an out-of-state tuition match program and is teaming up several other colleges in order to increase the interest in the SUNY system.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that she has chosen Hector LaSalle of Westchester County, to be the new Chief Judge of the State’s Highest Court, the Court of Appeals. If approved, LaSalle would replace Judge Janet DiFiore, who retired after serving as the chief judge since 2016.

The new law allows registered voters to cast their ballot at the wrong polling place as long as they are in the correct county and State Assembly district. Norwich Police & State Police responded Saturday evening to the report of a victim of an assault arriving at a downtown business asking for help. Police arrested 32 year old Jeffrey Sabines of Oxford, for 1st degree assault & criminal possession of a weapon, 44 year old Jason Lowe of Norwich, for 3 counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, and 4th degree conspiracy, 45 year old Daniel McCoy of Norwich, for conspiracy, and 37 year old Meredith Conkey of Norwich for obstruction of governmental administration & criminal possession of a controlled substance. Sabines was sent to the Chenango County Correctional facility without bail for violating his parole and for being a repeat offender, Lowe, McCoy, and Conkey were ticketed and released & will appear in Norwich City Court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 32 year old Kody MacDonald with Criminal Contempt, for allegedly violating an order of protection from Delaware County Family Court. MacDonald is accused of contacting protected parties in the town of Colchester last week, he was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Colchester Court at a later date.

19 year old Payton Gendron of Conklin pleaded guilty today to various charges, for the May shooting at the Buffalo TOPS Supermarket, killing 10 black people & injuring 3 others. Gendron pleaded guilty to murder, murder as a hate crime and hate-motivated domestic terrorism, which carries an automatic sentence of life without parole. Gendron admitted in court that he killed the people because of their race, he still faces federal charges relating to the same attack.

State Police responded to I-88 westbound near exit 13 in the town of Oneonta Tuesday night at about 6:00 PM for a report of a car carrier on fire. Members of the Oneonta Fire Department extinguished the fire. Damage was primarily around the passenger side rear axle; some of the trailer and cargo was damaged. The driver was not injured, the right lane was closed until about 9:30 pm.

State Police arrested 27 year old Gerard Bourgeois of Otego for 2nd degree Burglary & 3rd degree Arson, Police responded on Monday just before 8:00 PM to a report of a suspicious person in the area of Pleasant Valley Road in the town of Hartwick, troopers heard smoke alarms & observed smoke coming from a residence on Bunn Hill Road. The troopers notified area Firefighters & entered the home, they found an active fire at a gas stove, they could not turn off the stove due to the damage to the controls, & instead turned the propane tanks outside. Troopers responded to another report of a suspicious person near the Hartwick Restaurant on State Highway 205, when they located Bourgeois. Bourgeois was arraigned at Otsego County Centralized Arraignment and remanded to the Otsego County Jail on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond pending court action on October 12th.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 42 year old Katherina Cassata of Gilbertsville for 9 counts of Animal Cruelty after a search warrant was executed on September 16th, regarding an ongoing animal cruelty investigation. Cassata was charged with 9 counts of Overdriving, Abuse of Animals & Failure to Provide Sustenance, the investigation revealed that there were deceased animals were on the property and the remaining animals were malnourished. The animals were removed to the Susquehanna SPCA, the seizure included 19 horses, 2 pigs, a llama, a donkey, and a cat, plus a deceased alpaca was found on the property. Cassata was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable to the Town of Butternuts Court at a later date.

Governor Hochul announced plans to expand the availability of funding and resources to support local health departments in hopes of establishing immunization clinics, sending vaccines to health care partners and conducting outreach to unvaccinated New Yorkers in the battle against Polio. Currently, health departments are monitoring wastewater to find the polio virus, they encourage New Yorkers to get vaccinated as soon as possible. State Police arrested 22 year old Corey Sawyer of Norwich for allegedly stabbing 2 people in Chenango County. Sawyer was charged with 2 counts each of Attempted Murder & 2nd degree Assault and 4 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Troopers responded Wednesday to a residence on State Route 80 in the town of Otselic just before 1:30 AM, Sawyer is accused of stabbing 2 people with a knife during a domestic dispute, The victims were both taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital then later transported to Wilson Medical Center, with non-life-threatening injuries. 3 children under the age of 17 were at the residence when the incident occurred. Sawyer was transported to Chenango Memorial Hospital due to injuries he sustained prior to Trooper’s arrival. He was treated and released, he was arraigned & was remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $250-thousand cash bail, $500-thousand bond or $1-million partially secured bond. His next court date was set for October 4th.

2 Federal Inmates at the Delaware County Correctional Facility were arrested following an assault within the Delaware County Corrections Facility. On Thursday, September 22nd, members of the Criminal Investigation Division responded to the Correctional Facility, the Investigation revealed that 31-year-old Daquan Dowdell and 45-year-old Rashawn Wynn, both of Syracuse punched another Inmate in the face, which caused the serious physical injury. Wynn and Dowdell each with one count of 2nd degree Assault, they were arraigned and were remanded back to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending other charges.

With residential energy costs expected to rise nationwide this winter, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is calling for emergency supplemental funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program or “LIHEAP”:

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced nearly $7.9 million is being awarded through the Climate Resilient Farming Grant Program to help over 70 farms across the state reduce their environmental footprints and prepare for extreme weather events related to climate change. State Police arrested 56 year old Francesco Carotenuto of Schenevus for 1st degree rape, he was previously arrested on charges for Promoting Sexual Performance by a Child and Possessing Sexual Performance by a Child on September 8, 2022. After a further investigation, Investigators learned that Carotenuto forcibly engaged in sexual intercourse with a victim several years ago. Carotenuto was in jail for the previous charges, he was processed and returned to jail.

Broome County District Attorney office announced that Vernon Riddick pleaded guilty to Attempted Criminal Possession of a Weapon, for having an unlicensed and loaded .40 handgun on July 24th while driving erratically in Binghamton. Police said that Riddick fled in his car, he abandoned the car and ran on foot, Police confiscated that weapon from a trash can nearby. Riddick faces sentencing in December in Broome County Court.

State Police were dispatched Tuesday morning at about 5:40 AM, to a report of a tractor trailer rollover on I-88 east at exit 9 in the town of Sidney. An investigation revealed that an Old Dominion Freight Line tractor trailer with a rear tandem trailer overturned. The driver, a 38-year-old male of Albany, was not injured. The right lane was shut down and reopened around 8:00 AM.

State Police were dispatched Friday to Huckleberry Hill Road in the town of Middletown for a report of a missing 79-year-old woman with dementia. Numerous troopers, State Police K9, State Forest Rangers, Fire and EMS responded to the area, plus a State Police drone was utilized in assisting with the search. The 79-year-old woman was located in a heavily wooded area off Huckleberry Hill Road and sustained minor injuries. She was turned over to EMS and transported to Margaretville Hospital for further evaluation.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 27 year old Austin DeMuth of Guilford following a vehicle pursuit Monday afternoon with a motorcycle, from the Town of Smithville & into Cortland County & Broome County. DeMuth was taken into custody, following a pursuit on foot in Whitney Point, he was transported to Wilson Hospital with minor injuries, & he was charged with Unlawful fleeing, Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Resisting Arrest and numerous traffic violations. DeMuth also had a warrant out of the Town of Norwich Court, he was arraigned in the City of Norwich Court and was remanded with no bail and is to return to court on a later date.

State Police arrested 3 Binghamton men for attempted murder in connection with a shooting in West Corners in July. Arrested were Keith Harris, Alex Shoga & Tavin Wilson, they were arraigned at Broome County Central Arraignment and Processing. Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation that makes imitation weapons easily identifiable, allowing law enforcement to identify a device as fake when assessing threats. The law also said that permissible imitation weapons must be easily identifiable & must be colored white, or several bright colors, or be made of transparent or translucent materials.

U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced $5.4 Million dollars in federal funding for 3 Central New York and Southern Tier airports. Greater Binghamton/Link Field will get about 2.2 Million Dollars to reconstruct airfield guidance signs and to reconstruct or replace the airport lighting vault.

The Susquehanna SPCA will host area legislators and representatives from the New York State Animal Protection Federation and animal shelters from throughout the region, during a press conference later this morning in support of the Puppy Mill Pipeline Bill, which has already passed both houses of the New York State Legislature, Susquehanna SPCA Executive Director Stacie Haynes explains:

Haynes said that every year, thousands of puppies from out of state puppy mills are sold to unassuming consumers at astronomical prices. The dogs are bred in factory like facilities, and are physically, mentally, and medically compromised puppies sold at retail outlets, the bill has not yet been signed by Governor Hochul.

The Delhi Police Department responded to the report of a potential Active shooter incident at the Delaware County Courthouse, at about 10:30 this morning, which led to a lock-down & evacuations of downtown businesses and the Delaware Academy, according to Delhi Police Chief Mike Mills:

Chief Mills said that his department received assistance from State Police, Delaware County Sheriff’s Office & SUNY Delhi University Police, he also said that there was no panicking among those who had to clear out the area downtown, The village was re-opened as normal by early this afternoon.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the successful implementation of 988 in New York State as the new three-digit number to call or text to be connected to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. All 62 counties in New York State will be covered for the launch of the new 988 Lifeline, which will ensure that anyone with a New York area code contacting 988 will be connected to one of New York’s 988 crisis centers. In 2020, NYS received 142,827 calls, a 13 percent increase in just one year.

The Tops supermarket store in Buffalo, which was the site of a mass shooting that killed 10 people on May 14th, will reopen to the public this Friday. The store has been closed & underwent extensive renovations since the shooting, 18 year old Payton Gendron of Conklin is being held on 10 counts of 1st-degree murder, 2nd-degree murder as a hate crime and 3 counts of attempted murder as a hate crime, he is being held without bail pending future court action.

The Susquehanna SPCA is looking to find homes for 12 dogs that would do best in families without small children or other pets. Their “Singles Night: Meet Your One and Only Pet” will be held on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the shelter on State Route 28. Tioga Downs Casino Resort President and CEO Jeff Gural has been nominated by President Joe Biden to join his administration, as the chair of the Public Buildings Reform Board. The Board is an independent agency used to identify opportunities for the Federal government to significantly reduce its inventory of civilian real property, which would cut costs. Gural is expected to accept the nomination.

39 year-old Isaac Anzaroot of Brooklyn was arrested today by the Binghamton Police Warrant Division. Anzaroot is the owner of numerous properties in the city, he was wanted on 12 bench warrants and 2 arrest warrants related to housing code violations & for failing to appear in court to answer those violations. The Binghamton Code Department condemned the First National Bank building at 95 Court due to fire alarm system issues, which forced many of Anzaroot’s tenants to locate elsewhere.

The State DOT will be installing a new water main on State Route 7; Main Street in Otego, starting today, to facilitate a pavement, sidewalk and drainage project. Work will result in a short interruption of water service to village residents beginning at 10:00 AM, for about 3 hours.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli’s office issued a follow up report on a 2019 audit of the Hancock Fire Department. The audit included recommendations for rental payments, disbursements made by the Treasurer and collections from the clothing organization, ambulance corporation and fundraising activities. Auditors revisited the department this year, the department has had 1 of 10 recommendations implemented, 3 were partially implemented and 6 were not implemented.
