State Police are participating in the national enforcement initiative to crack down on impaired driving this holiday season. The national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, began today & runs through Monday, January 1st, 2024. In addition to the DWI checkpoints and patrols, Troopers will be watching for distracted drivers, vehicle occupants who are not properly buckled up, and drivers violating the “Move Over Law,” which requires motorists to exercise extreme caution when passing emergency vehicles that are stopped in or on the side of the road. State Police will also conduct underage drinker enforcement details statewide.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum will celebrate the Texas Rangers’ 2023 World Series championship through Autumn Glory, the Museum’s tribute to the postseason. 28 year old Devon Ireland of Unadilla pleaded guilty to Attempted Disseminating Indecent Material to Minors, in Delaware County Court, he admitted that he was sending sexual messages to a person he believed to be a minor, Ireland is a registered sex offender, it was later revealed that the person he was messaging was an adult, decoying as a child. Ireland will be sentenced to 1 year in jail, he will be required to pay fines and surcharges & he will provide a sample of his DNA for the state data bank. Ireland was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending sentencing on January 29.

State Police responded to a 3-vehicle crash in the town of Newfield, with 1 fatality reported. The investigation revealed that a Toyota and a Jeep were traveling north, The Jeep was stopped for another vehicle in front of it making a turn when the Jeep was rear-ended by the Toyota, which then went into on-coming traffic and was struck by a Cadillac. A passenger of the Toyota, 17-year-old Peyton Shaw of Waverly was pronounced dead on scene, The operator of the Toyota 18-year-old Dale Beeman of Spencer, was transported to Packer Hospital, the operators of the other vehicles were treated at the scene by EMS & were released.

State Police arrested 34 year old Joshua Bean of Endicott for 3 counts of Menacing, State Police responded to a complaint at Highland Park in the town of Union, where Bean allegedly menaced 3 people with a pocket-knife while they were working at the holiday fireworks display. Bean was arrested then transported to the Broome County Correctional Facility for arraignment.

Governor Hochul signed Angelica’s Law, which decreases the number of prior license suspensions needed to qualify for aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. The legislation was named for Angelica Nappi who lost her life after being killed by a driver with multiple prior suspensions.

36 year old Justin Baker of Sidney appeared in Delaware County Court Thursday, and was arraigned on a sealed indictment. The Indictment accuses Baker of possessing approximately $6,000.00 in fentanyl and methamphetamine with the intent to sell in the Village of Sidney on September 11th. Baker pleaded not guilty to the indictment & he was released from custody & was placed under the supervision of the Delaware County Probation Department, he could face up to 9 years in state prison if convicted on the top count.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame announced that they are receiving many items used in this year’s World Series, won for the 1st time by the Texas Rangers. Artifacts donated by the Rangers include a Cap worn by manager Bruce Bochy; a Batting helmet worn by World Series MVP Corey Seager, & the glove worn by Pitcher Josh Sborz, & the Bat used by Adolis García in Game 1 when he hit the game-winning home run, Items donated by the Arizona Diamondbacks will include a Bat used by Ketel Marte when he extended his postseason hitting streak to a record 20 games. State Police responded to a Tioga County 911 report of a hit and run motor vehicle accident involving two joggers in the Town of Tioga. 41-year-old Daniel Manwarring and 43-year-old Karen Manwarring, when they were struck by a Blue Nissan Xterra that then left the scene. Daniel Manwarring was declared deceased at the scene and Karen Manwarring was transported to Wilson Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.   33-year-old Jason Townsend of Nichols is in custody & faces court action shortly.

Chenango county sheriff’s department responded to a report of a hit and run motor vehicle accident on South Canal St in the Village of Oxford, where a 1999 Chevy Blazer, driven by 25 year old Donald Towndrow of Norwich, rear ended a 2009 Hyundai driven by a Village of Oxford woman as she was turning onto a side street,   Towndrow left the scene of the accident, but was located and was charged with unlicensed operation, leaving the scene of a personal injury motor vehicle accident, and following too close. He faces action in the Village of Oxford Court at a later date.
