Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 34 year old Aaron Talbot of Norwich for Failure to Notify Law Enforcement of an Address Change, which is a violation as Talbot is a level 3 convicted sex offender in New York. Talbot is accused of failing to register his new address within 10 days of his move, he was held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility on a parole warrant and is to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 41 year old Justin Ingalls of Milford following a welfare check in the Town of Milford. Ingalls was charged with Driving while intoxicated, Driving while ability impaired by drugs, Criminal possession of a controlled substance as well as Miscellaneous Traffic Violations, after an investigation revealed that Ingalls had been operating a motor vehicle while his ability was impaired by drugs, he was released on appearance tickets for Town of Milford court at a later date.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office patrols responded to reports of suspicious activity in and around an apartment building in the Town of Union Friday. The investigation revealed that 31 year old Miguel Martinez had broken into a second-floor apartment through a bedroom window. The noises alerted a downstairs neighbor, who called 911. Broome County Sheriff’s Office patrols & State Police located Martinez nearby and placed him in custody without incident, he was charged with 2nd degree Burglary & was arraigned and remains in custody at the Broome County Correctional Facility, United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement were informed of the arrest of the undocumented Martinez and will coordinate a transfer of custody at a later date.

The Norwich City Police Department has concluded the investigation into the armed robbery on May 23, 2023, at Holt’s Hemp Emporium. Varun Maharajh of Trinidad, also known as Kelvin Sihgh, is in Federal Custody in Florida, he was taken into custody on separate federal charges in November by the Indian River Sheriff’s Office, after a high-speed chase, he was charged with 7 counts in a federal indictment that alleges he knowingly attempted to export firearms and ammunition to the United Kingdom, as well as illegally and unlawfully possessing numerous firearms and ammunition. The Norwich Police Department is working with the Chenango County District Attorney’s and criminal charges are expected to be filed against Maharajh in the near future.

The State Department of Health announced the 3rd case of measles in 2024, The case was identified in a patient who resides in Nassau County and was confirmed at the Department’s Wadsworth Lab in Albany. The State Health Department is closely monitoring this case, along with Nassau County health officials, and have alerted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The first 2 cases were reported in New York City.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a complaint regarding a larceny that took place on December 19th at the Home Depot in the Town of Union. The female suspect walked out of the Home Depot with hundreds of dollars in merchandise without paying, After being confronted outside the store by Loss Prevention, the female claimed she forgot her wallet and would return to pay for the items, but never did. Delaware County Sheriff’s office announced the arrest of 2 people following a Traffic Stop on State Highway 10 in the Town of Walton last month. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies observed a vehicle to be speeding, they conducted a traffic stop & identified the driver of the vehicle as 34-year-old Honesty Muller of Hamden, whose driving privileges had been suspended for failure to pay driver responsibility assessment. Deputies also identified a passenger in the vehicle to be 28-year old Adam Robinson of Walton, Muller had an active Order of Protection against Robinson Muller was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle and Speeding, they charged Robinson with Criminal contempt, both were ordered to appear in Walton Town Court at a later date.

The State Cannabis Control Board voted to extend the adult-use cannabis license application window from December 4th until December 18th, to all adult-use license types. Arraigned in the Tioga County Court were 37 year old Joseph Howell, for 1st & 2nd degree Murder, kidnapping & intimidating a witness, 31 year old Colleen Dillon for 1st & 2nd degree murder & kidnapping, 39 year old Kysha Radcliff for kidnapping & 31 year old Jonathan Glennon, for 1st & 2nd degree murder and kidnapping, 11 people were charged in the case, Additional indictments are pending.

The Broome County Special investigations Unit Task Force arrested 26 year old Hosam Alghem of Endicott and 23 year old Connor Huttleson of Endicott for Tax Fraud after a search warrant uncovered untaxed cigarettes and unauthorized cannabis products at Smoker’s Choice at East Main Street in the Town of Union. Officers seized 73 cartons of untaxed tobacco cigarettes, Several pounds of various packaged items containing cannabis & $1,560 in cash. The 2 were released on appearance tickets for town of Union Court, The case has been referred to the Office of Cannabis Management.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that more than $8.8 million has been awarded to projects to create more housing. Greater Opportunities for Broome and Chenango, will receive $4.3 million to develop 17 units including 50 beds of permanent housing for chronically homeless individuals and families in New Berlin. The project includes the preservation of seven existing units and 10 newly constructed units, as well as the moderate rehabilitation of three buildings and the gut rehabilitation of another.

Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced that 32 year old Courtni Baker of Sidney, appeared in Delaware County Court on September 25th and was sentenced for Aggravated Vehicular Assault. Baker had previously pleaded guilty to Aggravated Vehicular Assault and Aggravated DWI following a crash in February in the Village of Sidney, where she struck 14 year old Anielle “AK” McEwan Lomnicki as she was walking home from school. Judge Hubbard sentenced Baker to an indeterminate term of state prison having a minimum of 4 years and a maximum of 12 years for Aggravated Vehicular Assault, she was also sentenced to serve a concurrent 1-year sentence for her conviction of Aggravated DWI. The Court imposed fines totaling $2,270.00 and ordered that the defendant’s driver’s license be revoked.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli has published a report detailing the economic issues facing 10 rural upstate counties, including Chenango & Delaware Counties. DiNapoli’s report states that while the state population increased by about 4% from 2011 to 2021, rural population dropped by 3.4%. State Attorney General Letitia James & 17 other state’s attorneys general, joined the Federal Trade Commission in suing Amazon, alleging that the online retail and technology company is a monopolist that uses a set of interlocking anti-competitive and unfair strategies to illegally maintain its monopoly power. The lawsuit alleges that Amazon’s actions allow it to stop rivals and sellers from lowering prices, degrade quality for shoppers, overcharge sellers, stifle innovation, and prevent rivals from fairly competing against Amazon.

State Police announced that applications to take the New York State Trooper Entrance Exam have reached 10,000. The age to become a State trooper has been changed from 29 to 34. New York State will be offering the Trooper Entrance Exam at 59 testing centers across the state, as well as over 250 locations across the United States and 112 military locations around the world. Individuals wishing to take the Trooper Entrance Exam may sign up on the website at JoinStatePolice.ny.gov. The last day to submit an application is Sunday, October 1. Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies responded last Tuesday to a domestic incident at the Knights Inn in the Town of Union and arrested 60 year old Samuel Stukes of Endicott. Stukes was in violation of an order of protection and was wanted by the Binghamton Police Department. Deputies heard a disturbance coming from the rear of the motel building at the same address, 43 year old Keith Johnson of Endicott was found engaging in a physical fight a 15-year-old child, he resisted arrest, tried to fight with deputies and was tased and subdued. Johnson was charged with 5 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, & 1 count each of Obstruction, Resisting Arrest & Harassment. Both Stukes and Johnson were taken into custody.

Dager has been missing since January 10th, he was last seen wearing black sweatpants and a black T-shirt, with no jacket, he is 5’8″ & about 225 pounds with white hair, he left in an unknown direction, he did not have a cell phone with him. State Police responded Friday to State Route 17 west to a crash involving several vehicles. In the 1st crash, vehicles were stopped on State Route 17 due to a construction barrel in the road, a vehicle was unable to stop and struck the rear of a vehicle, causing 2 vehicles to spin, 1 of them hit the guide rail, the other vehicle, struck a different vehicle and pushed it into 1 of the original vehicles. 2 drivers were taken to Wilson Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, 2 other drivers were injured, & were treated at the scene.

State Police were dispatched Saturday to assist Cherry Valley Fire with a hiker who had fallen from a waterfall down about 150-feet into a gorge. 1st responders hiked about a mile through a wooded area to locate the 32-year-old woman from Troy, she was pulled to safety and was airlifted to Albany Medical Center, where she was treated & released.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 32 year old Emily Wood of Morris for Aggravated Harassment, following a complaint in the Town of Morris. Wood is accused of sending threatening and unwanted text messages to the victim. The defendant is set to appear in the Town of Morris Court at a later date.

Broome County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a 2-car accident on I-86 in the Town of Windsor. During the investigation, 39 year old Michael Morgan of Queens, failed a field sobriety test & was charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs. Morgan was processed and released on tickets returnable to the Town of Windsor Court.

Firefighters from Bainbridge, Guilford, Mount Upton, Masonville, Coventry, Franklin, Trout Creek, Afton and Sidney all responded to a structure fire at the Auto Plus Store at 4 Front Street Monday Night at about 9:00 PM. Investigators are trying to determine how the fire started, the store was closed when the fire broke out, no injuries among fire fighters were reported.

The fire at the Minnewaska State Park Preserve was contained on Sunday, according to the Governor’s office. The State DEC Forest Rangers are leading the incident response in cooperation with the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, State Police and many other State and local partners. Response actions in the area will continue in the coming days with a smaller force of state and local experts as fire control efforts advance. More than 200 firefighters, bulldozer operators, pilots, and other professional staff and volunteers have been working to contain the fire.

State Police reported that 79 year old RoseMarie Windisch of Jefferson was the driver of a vehicle that veered into the opposing lane & hit a Flatbed Truck July 21st. Windisch was pronounced dead at the scene, on State Route 23 in the Town of Roxbury, The flatbed truck operators was unable to avoid the collision, & was treated at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown for non-life-threatening injuries.

The State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for June 2022. Locally, Chenango County had 3% unemployment, Delaware County 3.5% & Otsego County 3.1% unemployment in June, the state Unemployment was at 4.4%.

Catholic Charities announced another successful Mass Food Distribution in Sidney on July 19th. 623 Households received food, 36 Families had 6 people or more in their household, a total of 1,742 People received over 17,000 pounds of food. 58 volunteers helped distribute the food at latest Sidney event.

The Chenango County Historical Society announced their Summer Barn Party, to be held from 6:00 to 8:30 PM on Friday August 5th in the Society’s Loomis Barn, at 41 Rexford Street in Norwich. Patient Hospitalizations continue to increase back up to 2,649, there are 253 ICU patients, 79 on ventilators, there were 24 more deaths reported in Hospitals & nursing homes from COVID 19.

State Police responded to a shooting in the town of Union Monday night. Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that nearly $70 million in grant funding has been awarded to newly licensed, registered or permitted child care programs in areas lacking child care slots, The funds were made available through the American Rescue Plan Act and are administered by the State Office of Children and Family Services. In the Southern Tier, $4,148,000 in grant funding will go to 26 child care facilities.

State Police arrested 25 year old Mason Kneedler of Cortlandville was arrested for 5 counts of Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child. Kneedler is accused of possessing images consistent with child sexual exploitation. An investigation was initiated after a cyber tip was received by the New York State Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Kneedler was issued appearance tickets to the Cortlandville Town Court on July 11th . .

The Associated Press reported today that New York’s new law barring sales of bullet-resistant vests to most civilians doesn’t cover the type of armor worn by Payton Gendron of Conklin, when he killed 10 people at a Buffalo supermarket, May 14th. Gendron wore a steel-plated vest, which stopped a bullet fired at him by a security guard in the supermarket. New York’s law restricts sales of soft bullet-resistant vests to people who work in law enforcement and the military, plus people in certain other professions that require protective gear, that list has not been finalized.

Oneonta Police arrested 31-year-old Terry DeCutler of Sidney and 34-year-old Nicholas DeCutler of Unadilla,, for 2nd degree murder, for the May 30th murder of Kaleb O’Neill in the alley near 6 Dietz Street. They were arraigned in City of Oneonta Court and were remanded to the custody of the Otsego County Sheriff pending court action on Wednesday. State Troopers were dispatched Friday to a report of a drowning at Highland Park in the town of Union. When troopers arrived, a 12-year-old boy had already been pulled out of the pool by lifeguards and CPR was being performed. The 12-year-old was not breathing and had no pulse. Troopers, EMT & members if the Endwell Fire Department eventually had the 12-year-old breathing and did have a pulse when he was transported to Wilson Hospital, & he was later airlifted to Upstate University Hospital where he is still listed in critical condition.

Governor Hochul announced that $567 million is now available to help low-income electric and gas utility customers pay off past utility bills. This one-time, low-income utility bill credit will be applied to affected customers’ bills by the utilities, & requires no action by customers enrolled in the EAP program, The credit is expected to be applied to customers’ accounts by Aug. 1st. .

State Police released more details regarding a 2 vehicle crash in Conklin last Friday Morning. Police stated that 4-year-old Kaylynn Mendez has passed away from injuries sustained, while a passenger in a Dodge driven by 36 year old Michael McDonald of Conklin. McDonald, Mendez & 1 other passenger were taken to Wilson Hospital, 2 others were airlifted to Upstate Medical in Syracuse. The Driver of the 2nd vehicle, 53 year old Christopher Davidson of Owego was evaluated at the the scene & was released, The investigation into the crash is on-going.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accident Tuesday, where 43 year old David Koshinski of Johnson City crashed his pickup truck, which overturned, on Route 12 in the town of Chenango. Koshinski is accused of attempting to drive the vehicle away from the crash scene, he was charged with driving while intoxicated, moving from lane unsafely & operating a vehicle with no windshield and operating a vehicle with no left-side mirror.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced 24-year-old Elijah Burnside was sentenced to 3 to 9 in years in prison, for a 2019 crash that killed 70-year-old Ronald Phetphongsy in Binghamton. Burnside struck Phetphongsy’s vehicle when he drove through a stop sign at the intersection of Chapin and Leroy Street. Phetphongsy was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Delaware County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 34 year old Taylor Lovette of Amherst for driving with a suspended license. Deputies stopped a vehicle on State Highway 10 in the Town of Delhi on January 16th, operated by Lovette for driving with a headlight out. Lovette’s Driver’s license was suspended due to lack of insurance, he was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Unlicensed Operator, and Operating with Inadequate Headlamps, he was released on tickets for Town of Delhi Court at a later date.

The State Health Department & The Governor’s Office reported that over 229,000 people were tested for COVID 19 Tuesday, with 16,519 positives, for a Positivity rate of 7.18%. Patient Hospitalization declined by 519 to 9,335, the number of Patients in an ICU dropped by 78 to 1355 and the number on ventilators dropped to just under 800. New deaths reported by healthcare facilities was 158.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the “Bring Back Tourism, Bring Back Jobs” initiative, to revitalize the industry that was severely curtailed because of the pandemic. $100 million will be used for a worker recovery fund, which will pay up to 36,000 workers $2,700 if they qualify, another $100 million will go toward the tourism return-to-work grant program, which will pay businesses for employee retention. Companies can get up to $5,000 for each new full-time employee and $2,500 for part-time workers, as long as they stay for more than 6 months.

The State Health Department reported that 75% of all New Yorkers have received at least 1 COVID 19 vaccine dose, the numbers are expected to go up quickly as children ages 5 to 11 are now eligible for a children’s dose of the vaccine. On Monday, there were 1,878 New Yorkers hospitalized with COVID-19, the 7-day rolling positivity average was 2.65%, which is up from 2.24% in the previous week, local County Health Departments have reported lower vaccine rates & higher positivity rates in their COVID testing.

New York Attorney General Letitia James announced an agreement had been reached with Ticket Fulfillment Services and 5 ticket resale websites to give money back to people who had tickets to an event that was canceled because of COVID-19 pandemic. The $4.4 million settlement means that thousands of New Yorkers who were denied refunds for events, will be refunded. New Yorkers who purchased tickets to an event through TFS or its affiliates go to customer support on the website where the tickets were purchased initially, for a full refund.

The New York State Office of Cannabis Management announced the availability of a web-based portal at cannabis.ny.gov/local-government, through which localities seeking to opt-out of hosting cannabis retail dispensary and/or on-site cannabis consumption licensees within their jurisdictions, can easily send their requests to the state Cannabis Control Board. The new state Marijuana Regulation & Taxation Act gives cities, towns, and villages until December 31, 2021 to pass a local law that makes a request to the state Cannabis Control Board to opt their jurisdiction out of hosting retail and/or on-site cannabis consumption licensees. Localities that opt-out by December 31, 2021, can always opt back in. After the December 31 deadline has passed, the Office of Cannabis Management will compile the information provided by localities and make it public so that those seeking a license will have the information they need to find jurisdictions in which they can operate.

State Police responded to a fatal accident Saturday involving a pedestrian. The incident occurred on State Highway 17C near exit 69 in the town of Union, where 38 year old Wesley Conklin entered the roadway and was stuck by 2 vehicles. Conklin was pronounced deceased at the scene, no criminal charges will be filed. State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Collision Reconstruction Unit, Johnson City Fire and the Broome County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene.

New York Attorney General Letitia James and the U.S. Department of Labor announced landmark agreements with United Healthcare to resolve allegations that United unlawfully denied health care coverage for mental health and substance use disorder treatment for thousands of Americans. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli today announced the audit of the Town of Butternuts. The audit found that the board did not provide adequate oversight of the disbursement process and exceeded its authority under New York State Town Law by authorizing insurance claims and annual contracts to be paid before audit and approval. The board also exceeded its authority by allowing a third-party vendor direct access to the town’s bank account that, at times, had more than $500,000 on deposit. In addition, the board allowed debit cards to be used, which resulted in a circumvention of the town’s disbursement controls. Auditors found that the142 disbursements totaling $142,200 they reviewed were for proper purposes and adequately supported. However, the board, did not audit and approve 53 of these claims totaling $15,600 before payment as required.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office announced that State Route 206, between the Village of Walton and Lower Third Brook Road, was closed to traffic for several hours Tuesday morning as a result of a tractor trailer accident. At approximately 9:30 am., Tuesday morning, Deputies, members of the Walton Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Squad and State DOT workers responded, the driver, 59 year-old Rogelio Rodriguez, of Decatur, Indiana, was driving an empty milk tanker when he momentarily took his eyes off the road causing the truck to strike the guide cables and a tree. Rodriquez was not injured in the collision.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office announced that a Downsville man is facing a charge of criminal contempt following a report of a domestic dispute in the Town of Colchester. On Tuesday evening, Deputies responded in the Town of Colchester, 53 year-old Michael Colao, of Downsville violated the terms of an order of protection issued by Delaware County Family Court. Colao was charged with criminal contempt, he was released & will appear in the Colchester Town Court on a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 21 year-old Shawn Zimmerman, of Gloversville, for endangering the welfare of a child and forcible touching, Zimmerman is accused of inappropriately touching a juvenile female in the Village of Stamford. Zimmerman was arraigned in the Town of Harpersfield Court where he was issued a temporary order of protection prohibiting him from having contact with the victim, he was released in his own recognizance pending a future appearance in that court.

Due to an increased spread of COVID-19, Chenango County is requiring mandatory face masks in all County Buildings and Offices at the start of business on Monday, August 16, 2021. All employees and members of the public (vaccinated and unvaccinated) fall under this requirement. Otsego County is currently at a SUBSTANTIAL level of community transmission, and is on the verge of becoming HIGH level of community transmission. CDC & Otsego County Department of Health recommends everyone to wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission, to maximize protection from the Delta variant and prevent possibly spreading it to others. This week there have been several cases of individuals having a repeat COVID-19 infection. This occurs when someone is infected with COVID-19 and 90 or more days later tests positive again for COVID-19. These repeat infections are mostly occurring in unvaccinated individuals. This reinforces that immunity from natural infection diminishes after 90 days. It is important if you have had COVID-19 and are not vaccinated please consider getting vaccinated to prevent a reinfection. In Otsego County. there are 82 active cases, 19 new cases reported today, with 5 hospitalized, there have been 2614 total cases in 2021.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fatal motorcycle crash Tuesday night in West Corners at Glendale Drive & Campville Road at 11:44 pm. 42-year-old Jason Krissel of the Town of Union was ejected off of his motorcycle & was pronounced dead, Krissel applied the brakes aggressively at the intersection, after traveling at a high rate of speed. The investigation is continuing.

The guide provides strategies, based on information from the Centers for Disease Control and the American Academy of Pediatrics, to position schools and districts to manage the risks for students and staff from COVID-19. State Police have updated their reports on the locating of 2 deceased people in a house in the town of Union last Wednesday.  The investigation has revealed that 49 year old Marc McKercher killed 48 year old Cynthia Pratt-Lyons & then took his own life.  The 2 were found deceased by State Police, Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies & members of the Endwell Fire Department after they were dispatched to check on the welfare of a resident at a house on Hall Street.

Governor Cuomo announced that starting tomorrow at 8:00 AM, New Yorkers 50 years of age and older will be eligible to receive the COVID 19 vaccine.   More than 1.65 million doses have been administered through New York mass vaccination sites and FEMA sites to date. Delivery of the week 15 allocation begins mid-week.  The ‘Am I Eligible’ screening tool has been updated for individuals with comorbidities and underlying conditions with new appointments released on a rolling basis over the next weeks.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 35 year old Natasha Mason of Walton on a Bench Warrant after she failed to appear for arraignment for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child in the Vehicle, Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Insufficient Head Lamps.  Mason was arraigned by in Delaware County Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $1,000 cash bail or $5,000 bail bond pending her appearance in Delaware County Court on a later date.

Binghamton Firefighters responded Sunday Morning to a fire at an apartment house at 59 Main Street.  The fire was reported at about 11:40 Sunday Morning, 1 occupant was taken to an area hospital for smoke inhalation, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 19 year old Anthony Kandalepas of Chesapeake, Virginia & a 17 year old juvenile from Jacksonville, Florida for Criminal Possession of a Weapon & Criminal Possession of Stolen Property.  Deputies responded to a report of a vehicle disabled in The Town of Milford, which was reported stolen out of Jacksonville.  A search led to the discovery of a loaded unregistered handgun, drug paraphernalia and other stolen items.  The juveniles were reported missing, the 17 year old was released into the custody of his parents, and the 14-year-old juvenile was released into the custody of Otsego County Child Protective Services.  Kandalepas was arraigned and remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond. U.S. Department of Homeland Security is assisting with the investigation and additional charges may be pending.

The State Health Department reported that over 246,000 COVID tests were conducted Saturday with over 7900 positives, or about 3.2% of all tested.  Hospitalizations were down to 4,355, the lowest since December 3rd, the number in an ICU bed was down to 890 & the number on ventilators was down to 572. There were 54 COVID deaths Saturday.  The Department also reported the discovery of the first case of a COVID-19 P1 variant, or Brazilian variant, in a 90 year old Brooklyn resident with no travel history.

State Police arrested 35 year old Joseph McCabe of Binghamton for Criminal Impersonation, McCabe allegedly falsely identified himself as a Court investigator in Kirkwood on February 23rd, and he was arrested & was processed and released on an appearance ticket to the town of Kirkwood court on March 31st.

State Police are looking for the public’s assistance a White GMC Sierra Pickup Truck that was involved in an incident in the village of Afton Friday night at about 5:55 PM.  State Police reported that decals on the truck say “handyman” on the tailgate have a red background and the writing is in black, there are also two phone numbers on the decal with a 315 area code, the pickup truck was last seen traveling north on State Highway 41 in the village of Afton, a white male in his 40’s with a beard and dark jacket was driving.  Anyone with information is asked to contact State Police at Sidney at 561-7400.

State Police and Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a residence on Hall Street in the town of Union to check on the welfare of the resident.  Troopers, Deputies & Endwell Fire Department members located 2 people were found deceased inside the home, they have been identified as 49-year-old Marc McKercher and 48-year-old Cynthia Pratts-Lyons, the investigation is continuing.

State Police arrested 58 year old Martin Lewicki of Norwich for 3rd degree Burglary & Criminal Mischief.   State Police asked for the public’s help in identifying a person who broke into the Balsam Inn in the town of Pharsalia last November, Surveillance video caught the suspect taking neon signs, bar lights, a bar table, bar stools and destroying several items, a tip led investigators to Lewicki, who was arrested, arraigned & was remanded to the Chenango County Jail without bail.

Delaware County Public Health will be conducting a COVID-19 vaccination clinic on Saturday at the DCMO BOCES- Harrold Campus, on State Route 206 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Chenango County Sheriff’s Department arrested 46 year old Christina Clifford of Edmeston following an investigation into forged fraudulent checks being cashed in a Town of North Norwich business. Clifford was charged with 2nd degree Forgery &plus conspiracy & petty larceny, she was taken into custody without incident, & was released to on an appearance ticket to appear in the Town of North Norwich Court at a later date.

Chenango County Correctional Officers discovered an unconscious male inmate in his cell Wednesday.    22 year old Dillin Button was pronounced deceased after attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.  The autopsy ruled his death as a result of a bacterial blood infection of the heart and pneumonia, it was revealed that 2 weeks earlier that Button was diagnosed with a bacterial blood infection and pneumonia at an area hospital & he checked himself out of before receiving complete treatment.

Delaware County Public Health reported 19 new COVID 19 cases Thursday out of 352 tested.  They report 111 active cases, 7 hospitalized & 354 in quarantine.

The State Health Department reported that on Wednesday over 271,000 COVID tests were given statewide, with 2.87% testing positive.  Patient hospitalizations, the number of patients in an ICU bed & the number on ventilators continue to decline, there were 57 deaths from the virus.

WCDO NEWS WEDNESDAY 8-19-20 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/wcdo-news-wednesday-8-19-20/ Wed, 19 Aug 2020 19:32:10 +0000 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/?p=7870 Continue reading ]]> The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accident involving a dirt bike and a parked van on Airport Road in the Town of Union Tuesday night.  Patrols were dispatched to Airport Road following reports of people riding minibikes and off-road motorcycles, 1 patrol observed a male riding a dirt bike which struck a full-size van that was parked on the side of the roadway a short time later.  Cameron Fortner was ejected off the dirt bike, a deputy found him unconscious and not breathing & she began CPR.  The investigation revealed that John Hughes saw the dirt bike traveling on the street, he entered the roadway with a shovel to force the dirt bike to the side of the roadway, and Fortner swerved & struck the van. Fortner was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Hughes was charged with 2nd degree Manslaughter, the investigation is continuing.

A Broome County Grand Jury has indicted 45 year-old Larry Harris of Johnson City on 2 charges of predatory sexual assault against a child and 2 counts of rape.  Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak said that Harris was already being held in the Broome County Jail facing murder and manslaughter charges for the death of 11 year-old Jerome Smith in February of 2019.  The new charges were filed after a victim came forward accusing Harris of sex crimes between 2013 and 2019, Harris will be tried separately on the new charges.

The State Health Department announced that there were 631 new COVID 19 cases diagnosed Tuesday, out of over 80,000 test administered.  The total number of COVID 19 positive tests is 427,202, currently there are 548 people Hospitalized, there were 6 more deaths attributed to the virus yesterday, bringing the state death toll to 25,270 since March.

The Broome County Health Department announced that they had a small number of positive COVID 19 cases diagnosed Tuesday, bringing their total to 1124 since March.  They have had 75 deaths, 980 recoveries and 503 are being monitored by the Department.

The Chenango County Health Department reported that they are still at 218 total cases of COVID 19 since March, with 102 Active Quarantines, 1 Hospitalization, 199 Recoveries, 7 deaths & 20,089 Tests Performed.

Otsego County Health Department reported 2 new COVID 19 positive cases today, bringing their total since March to 115.  There are 3 active cases with no one hospitalized, 106 have recovered, 25 are quarantined due to close contact to ta case, and 196 are quarantined after traveling from a high risk state.  There have been 6 deaths in Otsego County from the virus.

State Police and local law enforcement agencies statewide will be ramping up enforcement of impaired driving today through Labor Day, Monday, September 7th with their annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is designed to reduce alcohol and other drug-related traffic crashes.  Law enforcement will be stepping up patrols, and the NYS Thruway Authority and State Department of Transportation will have Variable Message Signs alerting motorists to the consequences of impaired driving to help deter that behavior. During the 2019 enforcement campaign, law enforcement throughout the state issued 4,995 tickets for impaired driving and 170,378 tickets for other vehicle and traffic law violations.

State Police and a Delaware County deputy were dispatched to a reported burglary in the town of Kortright where the homeowner told troopers a man & woman left the scene & that their residence in the town of Meredith had also been burglarized & a vehicle had been stolen.  The stolen vehicle was found at the Quality Inn of Oneonta, police arrested 34 year old Amber Weaver of Bloomville and 33 year old Christiaan Stewart of Bloomville for Burglary, Grand Larceny & Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, and Weaver was additionally charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.  Both were arraigned and were remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $30,000 cash bail or $60,000 bond.

Delaware County Public Health received 1 new positive test result for COVID-19 Tuesday and no additional recoveries have been reported. The known active cases in the County as of today is now 3. To date there have been 99 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19, with 20 people now under mandatory quarantine.  The 3 people are isolated and receiving care at home, 6 people have died and 90 have fully recovered.

Hartwick College will welcome students to the campus between this Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 30, with Classes beginning August 31.  All students and employees will be required to adhere to numerous protocols.  Coursework will be delivered both in-person and virtually for students in the fall semester. Changes to the academic calendar for the fall semester eliminated breaks until in-person instruction ends on Friday, November 20, and then all students will leave campus by November 21 and then complete the semester’s instruction and exams remotely. Governor Cuomo signed legislation conforming laws in estate planning and surrogates court procedures to the Marriage Equality Act.    The new law updates the language in the Estates, Powers and Trusts Law to recognize same sex marriages by removing phrases such as “husband/wife” and replacing it with “spouses, husbands or wives.” In the Surrogate’s Court Procedure Act, the phrase “father and mother” is updated and replaced with “parents”.  The law goes into effect immediately.

The Fireman’s Association of the State of New York announced that New York State is leading the nation in civilian fire deaths this year.  So far in 2019, there have been 92 civilians that have died in fires this year that number is expected to increase as the Association statistics show that winter is the busiest time of the year for home fires.  Officials hope that the numbers decrease in coming years as more New Yorkers replace the old style battery powered Smoke Detectors with the new state of the art types with 10 year batteries that do not need to be replaced annually.

A portion of State Route 8 in Sidney will be named the Sidney Veterans’ Memorial Highway under legislation signed into law by Governor Cuomo Tuesday.  The bill was sponsored by State Senator Jim Seward and Assemblyman Cliff Crouch after the Village of Sidney requested the special highway designation.  A formal sign installation will be scheduled with State DOT officials at a later date.
