The Broome County Sheriff’s Office announced that Scammers are impersonating Sheriff’s detectives and deputies in an effort to solicit money and gift cards from unsuspecting victims. Residents are reminded not to provide credit card or other payment information over the phone to anyone claiming to be law enforcement. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office has received several new reports from residents who received phone calls from individuals pretending to be detectives or deputies of the BCSO. where the scammers claim that the Residents missed their court appearances and were threatened with warrants for arrest or thousands of dollars in fines. Residents are urged to terminate the call and not share any credit card information over the phone, no matter what the scammer says. if you receive a scam phone call, please contact the Sheriff’s Office at 607-778-1911.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested of 32 year old Darin Wignall of Binghamton, On the morning of June 29th, Deputies initiated a traffic stop on State Highway 17 in the Town of Hancock, Wignall was found to have been operating a motor vehicle on a public highway while his driver’s license had been suspended 14 times. Wignall was charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle & Uninspected Motor Vehicle, he was released with an appearance ticket for Town of Hancock Court at a later date.

The State Department of Health today announced the filing of emergency regulations adding any condition for which an opioid could be prescribed as a qualifying condition for medical marijuana. Effective immediately, registered practitioners may certify patients to use medical marijuana as a replacement for opioids, provided that the precise underlying condition for which an opioid would otherwise be prescribed is stated on the patient’s certification. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 28 year old Samantha Rogers of Hancock on a Bench Warrant issued by the Binghamton City Court due for failure to appear in court to answer charges of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation & Unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Rogers was later turned over to Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies for arraignment in City of Binghamton Court.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies received a complaint of a red motorcycle on State Highway 28, in the village of Delhi, traveling at a high rate of speed. A responding Deputy was unable to safely pursue the motorcycle due to its speed. Deputies located and identified the operator of the motorcycle as 29 year old Kyle Vandewerker of Oneonta, who was clocked at 109 miles per hour. Vandewerker was issued Traffic Tickets for reckless driving, speeding, and speed not reasonable and prudent and was released to appear in the Town of Delhi Court to answer the charges on a later date.

State Police arrested 39 year old Allen Shew of Afton, for Criminal Trespass & Disorderly Conduct. Troopers responded to the Mirabito on Main Street in Afton, Shew is accused of throwing items inside the store, kicking the glass door and throwing items outside. Shew was arraigned in the town of Afton Court. He is scheduled to reappear on July 23rd, and advised never to return to the store.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Town of North Norwich resident for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, Criminal Using of Drug Paraphernalia and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. 53 year old Thomas Manwarren was charged Following a lengthy investigation into the sale and possession of methamphetamine in Chenango County, a search warrant was issued by Chenango County Court. Several packages of methamphetamine were seized from Manwarren’s residence, he was arraigned in the Town of North Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $50,000.00 cash bail.

Upon arrival, a deputy observed several vehicles attempting to leave, While attempting to approach a vehicle to identify and speak with it’s occupants, a 2nd vehicle driven by 17 year old Levi Wormuth of Hancock attempted to drive around the deputy, his flashlight and hand got caught in an open side window of the vehicle and he was dragged a short distance before freeing himself. Wormuth continued to drive away from the scene even after being ordered to stop; another Deputy stopped him. Wormuth was charged with Obstructing Governmental Administration, Reckless Endangerment, Operating in violation of restrictions of a junior license, he was issued an appearance ticket for Windsor court at a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff Deputies arrested 58-year-old Louis Brigandi Jr of Walton Wednesday, on charges of criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of marijuana following a report of a suspicious fire on Wilderness Mountain Drive in the Town of Hamden. Deputies say Brigandi knowingly possessed a number of prescription pills without a prescription, possessed a quantity of marijuana, and possessed two firearms while having a status as a convicted felon. Brigandi was arraigned in Hamden Town Court and was remanded to the Delaware County Jail in lieu of $1,500 bail.

Empire State Development Corporation could not verify that many of the companies participating in the Excelsior Jobs Program met their obligations or even justify giving the businesses tax breaks in the first place, according to an audit by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. Auditors found a range of problems from lowering job creation goals after companies did not meet expectations to not verifying if jobs were full-time or part-time. ESD also could not produce evidence that several companies actually created jobs and did not simply shift jobs. ESD officials disagreed with the audit’s findings. State Police have charged 22-year-old Ryan Webster of Morris with DWI, after a crash late Wednesday night on state route 20 in Edmeston. The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 2 Town of Norwich residents for Neglect of an Impounded Animal. Charged were 53-year-old Keith Robinson and 64 year old Mary Randall, they are accused of keeping 4 dogs in crates for extreme lengths of time without cleaning the crates or having proper ventilation. Palmer said that it currently costs about $20,000 for a service dog, the Chinese Auction drawing will begin at 4:00 PM behind the Unadilla library on July 11th.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office reported that 45-year old Christine Clark was pronounced dead on arrival at Wilson Hospital, after fire fighters pulled her from a house fire Wednesday evening in the Town of Dickinson. The fire at 127 Adams Drive was called in by a neighbor at about 7:00 PM.   The cause of the fire is under investigation, firefighters from the Town of Chenango, Port Dickinson, Choconut Center and Binghamton responded.

The city of Oneonta will officially re-open the Briggs pool bathhouse in Wilber Park, with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday at 12:45 PM. The city received funding from a state office of community renewal development block grant to renovate the bathhouse, which was built in 1938. The public is invited to attend.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 25-year-old Adam Whittington of Port Crane on a charge of 3rd degree rape and criminal sexual act, following allegations that he performed sexual acts with a 16-year-old female earlier this month. Whittington was arraigned in the Town of Fenton Court and taken to the Broome County Jail without bail.

Broome County Sheriff’s department announced the swearing in of new Undersheriff Fred Akshar Wednesday. Akshar was appointed to the position following the retirement of Undersheriff Alex Minor.   Akshar began working for the Broome County Sheriff’s department as a deputy in 2002.

Local counties will get more than $185 million in state and federal homeland security grants, to support infrastructure protection, sustain anti-terrorism programs, and enhance emergency preparedness and response. Otsego County will receive $500,000 for improvements and enhancements to merge 911 public safety-answering systems, and fund the implementation of new technologies for data sharing, greater operating efficiencies, and regional consolidation. Otsego, Delaware, Chenango and Broome counties, will share in $108,000 in a Hazardous Materials Grant program.

U.S. Senators Charles Schumer, and Kirsten Gillibrand will introduce the Protect Women’s Health from Corporate Interference Act, to restore the contraceptive coverage requirement guaranteed by the Affordable Care Act, and protect coverage of other health services from employers who want to impose their beliefs on their employees by denying benefits. The legislation would ensure no boss can use their personal belief, to limit what health care services an employee has access to.

If Congress doesn’t replenish the Highway Trust Fund by the end of the month, roadway and bridge projects in New York stand to lose millions in reimbursements. U.S. Senator Charles Schumer said the state needs up to $11 billion to keep various projects on schedule, if the Fund remains in limbo, without new funding from Congress, there would be a moratorium on new state highway projects and the jobs that come along with them. Schumer is urging his colleagues to support continuing the Highway Trust Fund for state projects

State Senator Jim Seward has filed nearly 4,000 signatures on nominating petitions for re-election as state senator representing the 51st senatorial district. Seward filed 3,099 signatures for the Republican Party nomination, 605 for the Independence party nod and 171 for the Conservative party designation. Seward was first elected to the state senate in 1986. So far, no democrats have announced their intention to unseat Seward in the general election.
