State Police held a Trooper Candidate Processing event this past weekend at the Police Academy in Albany, over 1225 applicants attended the event. State Police saw an increase in female and minority candidates compared to the last processing weekend. The number of female candidates increased by 30%, the number of Black candidates increased by 35%, and the number of Hispanic candidates increased by 13%. State Police are accepting applications for Entrance Examination until March 4th & individuals can take the test through March 17th, more information is available at joinstatepolice.ny.gov.

Broome County District Attorney Paul Battisti announced today a county-wide diversion program for those suffering from substance use disorders, in partnership with the Broome County Sheriff’s Office and Helio Health. Starting February 19th, qualifying accused individuals being arraigned at The Centralized Arraignment Part of the Broome County Court System will have the opportunity to be part of the new diversion program, Motivation to Change, where upon acceptance into the program, the individual will be directly transported to Helio Health for placement into detox or inpatient residential treatment. The Sheriff’s Department has agreed to transport program participants directly to Helio Health, where the individual will be assessed and the appropriate treatment plan would be recommended.

The Class of 2024 inductees to the General Clinton Canoe Regatta Hall of Fame has been selected and will be honored during the 62nd event in May, Spokesman John Harmon told WCDO News who was inducted:

Harmon said that the induction ceremony is scheduled for 1:00 pm Saturday, May 25 at General Clinton Park under the Main Entertainment tent, during the weekend of the General Clinton Canoe Regatta.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 30 year old Sophie Shalhoub of Meredith, for criminal possession of a weapon, following a domestic incident on January 31st. Deputies responded to the incident, during the investigation, a handgun was discovered belonging to Shalhoub, who did not possess a New York State Pistol Permit. Shalhoub was arrested & was released on an appearance ticket, returnable at a later date to the Meredith Town Court.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office announced that an Arrest Warrant issued by the County Probation Department has resulted in the arrest of 20 year old Timothy Taylor of Starlight, Pennsylvania. On Saturday February 2nd, Deputies were advised by Hancock Police that they had Taylor in custody for unrelated charges and Taylor had an outstanding Probation Absconder Warrant from the Delaware County Probation Department. Taylor was subsequently arrested & was brought to Delaware County Centralized Arraignment to answer his charges.

28 year old Frank Mazepa of Morris was indicted by a Delaware County Grand Jury for Criminal Possession of a controlled substance. Mazepa was arraigned on the indictment Tuesday, he is accused of possessing Fentanyl or Methamphetamine with intent to sell in Delhi last month. He was remanded to the Delaware County jail on $5,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond pending a conference on February 20th.

71 year old Rudolph Pacheco of Staten Island, was convicted in Delaware County Court of Vehicular Manslaughter, Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident, and Aggravated DWI, and was sentenced to state prison. Pacheco admitted to drinking beer and other alcoholic beverages for 6 to 7 hours before driving away, with a BAC over .18, he struck a pedestrian & admitted that he knew the pedestrian was killed, and he left the scene. Pacheco was sentenced to 3 to 9 years in state prison for Vehicular Manslaughter, 2 to 6 years for Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident; and a 1-year conditional discharge for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, the sentences would run concurrently, other fines were also imposed fines totaling $3,820 and his license was revoked, he will need to install an ignition interlock device if he is ever permitted to drive again, he was sent to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to begin serving his sentence.

42 year old Edna Cering of Sidney entered a guilty plea to Criminal Trespass in Delaware County Court. On August 5, 2023, Sidney Police received reports of individuals squatting in another individual’s home, as police arrived, 2 individuals ran into the woods behind it, 1 of the suspects was Cering, she appeared in County Court & was sentenced to a 1 year conditional discharge, a fine, and a mandatory state surcharge.
