The Sidney Chamber of Commerce annual dinner invitations are being sent out this week for the event to be held on Thursday June 2nd at the Sidney Fire Department on River Street, according to Sidney Chamber President Teri Schunk:

Schunk coincidentally was chosen by her peers as the Citizen of the Years, Gavins’s Pizzeria was named Business of the Years and the Sidney Alumni Association was chosen as the Organization of the years.

The 1st Annual Sidney Alumni Volleyball Game will be held starting Friday afternoon at 4:00 PM at the Sidney High School, organizer Victoria Fusco explains:

Oneonta Police Department announced that a resident was contacted by a person claiming to be a Federal Agent, investigating a drug trafficking crime and that the City of Oneonta Police Chief, Christopher Witzenburg, would be calling to verify this investigation, then a person claiming to be the Chief Whitzenburgh contacted the resident, who stated that she knows what the Chief sounds like on the phone at which time the caller terminated the call. Chief Witzenburg contacted Homeland Security with the number the call came from, it was confirmed to be a scam call. Oneonta Police Department urges are residents to report scam calls to them or your local authorities & never give personal information to scam callers.

During a routine property check the Sidney Police Department located an open door in the back of the former Grand Union building behind McDonald’s on Wednesday. Officers called for assistance and During the building search, 2 individuals were found inside the building illegally. 37 year old Peter Puglisi of Sidney and 39 year old Thomas Dugon of Afton were charged with 3rd degree Burglary, Possession of burglar tools & Attempted Petty larceny. Both men were arraigned in Village of Sidney Court & were released on their own recognizance to appear back in court at a later date.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is once again pushing to fully fund the USDA Rural Broadband Program for Fiscal Year 2023 at $350 million:

Gillibrand said that about 17% of rural residents nationwide still do not have reliable broadband, which left many rural students behind when remote learning became a necessity during the pandemic.

Village of Sidney Police Department with the assistance of the Hancock Police Department, Arrested 31 year old Jon Speller of Hancock on an active arrest warrant issued by the Village of Sidney Court. The arrest stems from an investigation into a complaint of a Family Court order of protection being violated over 20 times in a two week period. Speller was arrested and charged with the 21 counts of Criminal contempt, he was arraigned in Village of Sidney Court where he was remanded to the Delaware County Jail on $750 bail.

Broome County DA Mike Korchak announced that 30 year old Austin Whitney of Binghamton was sentenced to 25 years to life in State Prison, for the 2nd degree murder of Anthony Cebula. Whitney admitted to killing Cebula by striking him in the head repeatedly with a hammer in Binghamton in January of 2021.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office reported an inmate death at the Otsego County Jail Sunday afternoon, after correction officers found a unresponsive inmate in his cell during rounds. The inmate was pronounced dead at Bassett Medical Center, The State Commission of Corrections and the Attorney General’s Office are reviewing the case.
