The CDC’s has approved of an updated COVID-19 vaccine and they are urging New Yorkers to get the shot once it is available later this week. The 2023-24 vaccine was authorized by the federal Food and Drug Administration, it is expected to be available at pharmacies and physicians’ offices, as well as other health care providers, in the coming days.

Otsego County Department of Health announced that a skunk tested positive for rabies earlier this week. The skunk was found in a field in East Worcester, nearby farm animals were all boosted against rabies, there was no human exposure, more information is available at 547-4230 of go the Health Department page at otsegocounty.com

46 year old Lance Madsen of Bainbridge was arrested by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office for several counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, 2 counts Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, Reckless Driving, and several other Traffic Violations. Madsen failed to comply with deputies as they were attempting to stop him for traffic violations, he drove his vehicle in a reckless manner, at high rates of speed. Madsen was eventually taken into custody after stopping his vehicle in the driveway of his residence, he was found to have Methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia, he was arraigned and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail.

US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has forwarded legislation to continue to fund child care programs, as a deadline is approaching that could potential shut down many child care facilities:

The impending drop-off in federal funding would lead to over 250,000 children in New York State losing access to child care, would force over 5,700 child care centers across the state to close, forcing parents to cut their work hours or leave the workforce entirely and costing them $846 million in earnings as a result.

New York State welcomed a record 291.5 million visitors in 2022, the largest number of visitors in New York State’s history, generating more than $78.6 billion in direct spending and $123 billion in total economic impact. The State Cannabis Control Board voted to finalize the Office of Cannabis Management’s proposed regulations for the adult-use cannabis market, a larger group of individuals and small businesses across the state will now be able to apply for cultivator, processor, distributor, microbusiness, and retail dispensary licenses beginning on October 4th.

A commission created last year to enforce ethics rules for New York state’s employees and elected officials violates the state’s constitution because it is too independent, New York Supreme Court Justice Thomas Marcelle said it would require an amendment to the state constitution to give that sort of power to an independent body. The ruling came in a lawsuit filed by former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has been fighting an attempt by the Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government to force him to forfeit $5 million he received for writing a book about his administration’s efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
