A.M. NEWS WEDNESDAY 1-2-12

Yesterday meant that area lawmakers were sworn into office.  In Oneonta, state Senator Jim Seward, and assembly members Bill Magee and Claudia Tenney were sworn in.  In Broome County, County Executive Debbie Preston took the oath of office at the Forum Theater in Binghamton, along with All 15 county legislators.

Officials in Oneonta were delighted with the turnout for Oneonta First Night festivities on Monday night.  Organizers said that the streets were filled with celebrants, with about 25 entertainments acts at 14 different downtown locations after main street parade at 4:00 PM Monday, and ending with fireworks at about 10:30.

Broome County arrested Laura Sturgeon, after she & a friend took a 2009 Toyota pick up truck for a test drive from an auto dealership in the Town of Union, and did not return it for more than 4 hours.  Deputies say she took a four-hour test drive.   Deputies found Sturgeon and the vehicle around 8:30 p.m. at a gas station in the Town of Union, deputies reported that Sturgeon had used the vehicle for shopping; she was charged with one count of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle & will appear in the Town of Union Court at a later date.

The Oneonta common council will hold their next regular meeting this evening.  The council is expected to act on Mayor Dick Miller’s recommendations for appointments to city positions; the meeting will begin at 7:00 PM in the common council chambers on the 2nd floor of city hall.
