Governor Cuomo launched a pilot program to provide free English-language training via mobile phones to hundreds of immigrant in New York State who may lack regular access to a classroom, a computer or the Internet. Learners will gain access to self-paced audio and text lessons through their personal cell phones. The program will initially reach farm workers in three areas: the “dairy belt” in both the Finger Lakes and North Country regions, and downstate in the Hudson Valley and New York City where immigrants face transportation challenges.

The state Assembly passed a series of bills designed to have women earn the same pay as men for the same job, assembly Speaker Carl Heastie comments:

Currently, women earn 86% of what men earn for the same job, on average, across New York State.

State Police at Oneonta arrested 59-Year-old Larry Gual of Meredith for Felony DWI & Felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a motor vehicle. Troopers responded to a 1-car motor vehicle accident on County Route 14 in the Town of Meredith, Gual is accused of driving while intoxicated, with a suspended driver’s license, when he crashed and rolled his vehicle. Gual was issued tickets returnable to the Town of Meredith Court on May 20th.

The village of Sidney announced their annual lawn clean up & the appliance, metals & tires drop off dates. Starting on Monday may4th, village crews will begin to pick up brush, leaves, grass clippings & yard waste at the curb, beginning at 7:00 AM. The drop off of electronics, metals, tires without rims & freon containing appliances will beheld may 8th & 9th, from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, more information is available at the village website: villageofsidney.org.

Norwich Pharmaceuticals held a groundbreaking ceremony at their site on state route 12 in the town of Norwich this morning. The company is planning a 26 million dollar construction project in the town of Norwich.
