Governor Kathy Hochul announced $230 million in awards will go to 9 upstate airports for revitalization projects. The Greater Binghamton/Edwin A Link Field Airport will get $32 million to fund 2 projects, one will entail a relocation of the General Aviation Terminal to integrate it with the Passenger Terminal, The 2nd project will construct a new, 3,000-square-foot General Aviation Customs & Border Protection facility south of the terminal.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 30-year-old Kassondra Pierce of Hamden for endangering the welfare of a child. Deputies received a complaint from Child Protective Services with possible allegations of physical abuse regarding a juvenile. Pierce is accused of striking the victim with excessive force, Pierce was processed and released with an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Hamden Court at a later date.

The State Labor department announced that the number of private sector jobs in New York State increased over the month by more than 27,000, to just over 8 Million in August. New York State’s unemployment rate increased from 4.3% in July to 4.7% in August, The Labor Participation rate was just over 60%, equaling the number just prior to the start of the pandemic in March 2020.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 31 year old James Cook of Masonville following an incident on September 8th. Members of the Sheriff’s Office & the owner of a property had completed a court ordered eviction at State Highway 206 in Masonville, Deputies returned to a reported trespass in progress, Deputies’ located Cook, he was charged with 2 counts of Criminal Mischief, 1 count each of Aggravated Harassment, Criminal Trespass, and 2nd degree Burglary. Cook was arraigned in the Town of Masonville Court and remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending future court action.

The Otsego County Health Department reported 1 more COVID 19 death Thursday, bringing their total of deaths from COVID for this year to 48 & 67 deaths since the pandemic began. The Department reported 20 new cases Thursday with 173 active cases, 7 hospitalized & 5267 total cases since March of 2020.

The State Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting on Wednesday, September 22 at 5:30 PM, to present the design plans for improvements to pavement, sidewalks and drainage on State Route 7 in the Village of Otego. The project will enhance bicycle and pedestrian safety and improve resiliency along Main Street from the I-88 ramps to the Otsdawa Creek Bridge. The FCC has adopted rules to establish 988 as the new, nationwide, 3-digit phone number for Americans in crisis to connect with suicide prevention and mental health crisis counselors. To ensure that calls to 988 reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, area codes with a “988” Exchange, will need to transition to 10-digit dialing. Beginning October 24, in the 607 area, callers must dial 10-digits, the area code + telephone number, for all local calls, those who only dial the 7 digit phone number will not have their call completed, and a recording will remind the caller to hang up and dial again using the area code and the 7-digit number.

A.M. NEWS FRIDAY 9-17-21

State Police are investigating the intentional burning of a pride flag outside of a home in Gilbertsville.   The flag was hanging on the front porch of the home on Spring Street when it was set on fire sometime between September 9 and September 12.  The fire also caused minor damage to the paint on the front porch.  The homeowner also reported that another pride flag and a “Keep it Kind” lawn sign were stolen from the same property several weeks ago.  It is unknown at this time if the incidents are related.  Anyone with information is asked to New York State Police at (607) 561-7400.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that $200 Million dollars in additional food assistance through the SNAP program will be available through the end of September.  All SNAP Recipients Will Receive Maximum Food Benefits for the Month, Governor Hochul also directed the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to continue working with the federal government to ensure these supplemental benefits will reach households in need throughout the fall.

Schoharie County District Attorney Susan Mallery contends that the questionable business practices of Mavis Discount Tire in Saratoga Springs auto shop had no role in an October 6th 2018 limousine crash that killed 20 people in Schoharie.  Mallery said that the attorneys for the limousine company’s operator, Nauman Hussain, had wrongly cast blame on Mavis, where workers had allegedly Billed Hussain for brake work on the 2001 Ford Excursion that was not performed, several months before the deadly accident.  Hussain has been charged with 20 counts of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide by a Schoharie County Grand Jury

The 4 candidates for the Norwich City Mayor’s Office will meet for a public debate Wednesday at 6:00 PM at the Norwich YMCA at 6:00 PM.  The candidates are incumbent Christine Carnrike, Shawn Sastri, Jill Osterhout-Kraft, and former mayor Joseph Maiurano.  Following the debate, the candidates will participate in a Meet & Greet with voters.

NYSEG is working to restore power to customers impacted by the nor’easter that has brought high winds and heavy rain to much of their service area.  More than 37,000 customers have been impacted as a result of the weather. Currently, less than 5,000 customers are without power, many of those are in Chenango & Broome Counties.

Governor Cuomo announced that the minimum wage increase for State Workers would take effect beginning tomorrow. The increase will be implemented on the same phased-in schedule currently underway for fast food workers, all State workers will receive an hourly wage of at least $9.75 per hour for employees outside of New York City.
————————————————————————————–Governor Cuomo announced that New York State would begin accepting applications for the new ‘Get On Your Feet’ Loan Forgiveness Program on December 31st. the program offers up to 24 months of federal student loan debt relief to recent college graduates living in the State. To qualify, applicants must have earned an undergraduate degree from a college or university located in New York State in or after December 2014, have an adjusted gross income of less than $50,000, and be enrolled in the federal Income Based Repayment plan or Pay as You Earn plan. more than 2,500 graduates from the class of 2015 have registered to apply for the program through the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation.

Binghamton Police are looking for 2 suspects who robbed a woman Tuesday evening. One man was armed with a gun and the other with a baseball bat. The first suspect is described as a tall black male, wearing dark-colored clothing and a dark-colored bandanna covering his face, the 2nd suspect is described as a tall, light-skinned male in his 20s with a thin build, wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt, dark-colored pants, and a bandanna covering his face. Governor Cuomo today announced $10 million in Public Safety Answering Points operations grants have been awarded to municipalities across New York State. The funding through State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services will support 57 counties and the City of New York in improving 9-1-1 response and emergency dispatching. Locally, Broome County receives $209,000, Chenango County gets over $170,000, Delaware county received over $154,000 and Otsego County will get over $157,000.

Syracuse Police have arrested 2 brothers from Binghamton for allegedly beating 2 men who were intervening on behalf of a homeless person being harassed Christmas Night. 18-year-old Nouman Khan and 20-year-old Hamza Khan, both of Binghamton, were charged with assault late Tuesday night after turning themselves in to police. Police reported that the victims intervened when a group of five men harassed a homeless man, 1 of the victims suffered a skull fracture. The Khan brothers were released on appearance tickets and ordered to appear in Syracuse City Court on January 20.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested 30 year old Kendra McLain of Sherburne Thursday for burglary, grand larceny and forgery. McLain was arrested for unlawfully entering a residence and stealing property from within, for allegedly forging personal checks and receiving money from the vicitm’s bank account. McLain was arraigned in the Town of Sherburne Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $10,000 cash bail.

Governor Cuomo announced that $48 million in grants have been awarded for transportation improvements across the State, which will leverage an additional $80 million in federal, state and local funding. A $1.1 million federal grant will bring new pavement to Greater Binghamton Airport’s west apron. U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and Rep. Richard Hanna announced the $1.1 million dollar grant from the federal Department of Transportation. The 168,000-square-foot asphalt apron is separate from the runways and taxiways. There, aircraft load and unload, and are boarded, parked and refueled. The pavement currently shows signs of distress and requires rehabilitation.

New York added 22,700 private-sector jobs in August, but the unemployment rate rose as more people try to re-enter the workforce.   New York’s unemployment rate rose from 7.5 percent in July to 7.6 percent in August. The national rate was 7.3 percent in August. The number of unemployed New Yorkers rose from 717,400 to 729,700 between July and August.

New York electric customers will get a small credit on an upcoming bill, as the state Public Service Commission approved of a 1-time credit to electricity bills of up to $3.00, depending on usage.  Regulators reported that the credit steams from a settlement that included a $110 million dollar civil penalty against constellation Energy commodities Group, on grounds that the power producer manipulated wholesale energy sales in 3 regional markets.  The credit will be passed on as soon as utilities received the funds.

PM NEWS FRIDAY 3-15-13 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/pm-news-friday-3-15-13/ Fri, 15 Mar 2013 17:08:06 +0000 http://www.wcdoonline.com/localnews/?p=689 Continue reading ]]> State Police have released new details about the attack that killed 47-year-old Lori Bresnahan of Liverpool and the sexual assault of a child.  Troopers said that Bresnahan, and a 10-year-old girl were leaving a gymnastics class last night when they were accosted by a man.  29-year-old David Renz allegedly bound the woman and raped the child inside the vehicle, and then drove the victim’s vehicle a short distance, where the child was able to escape and was found by a passing motorist.    Bresnahan suffered multiple stab wounds and later died at Upstate University Hospital, the child is being treated at the hospital for her injuries.  Renz was charged with 1st degree rape, 1st degree kidnapping, as well as 1st & 2nd degree murder.  The investigation is continuing.

New England Wood Pellet of Deposit was fined over $17,000 by the occupational safety & health administration, for allegedly exposing workers to hazardous conditions at their Delaware county facility.  Problems sited at the deposit plant include improper ventilation, lack of spark detection and extinguishing systems.

Assembly minority Republicans voted against raising the minimum wage to $9.00 an hour this week.  Assemblyman Cliff Crouch said that in recessionary times, it could prove to be costly:

The bill passed in the Assembly, but it’s not expected to pass in the senate, Governor Cuomo has supported the idea of an increase in the minimum wage, but not as high $9.00 an hour.

New York State Labor Commissioner Peter Rivera announced that New York still has nearly $4 million available in federal funding to help businesses hire long-term unemployed workers through the On the Job Training Program. Past grants are responsible for 445 businesses hiring 844 workers since 2011.  The grant provides training subsidies of up to $23,000 per worker, they target long-term unemployed New Yorkers who have been unemployed for 20 weeks or more and go to employers to cover 50-90 percent of training-related expenses. The Chenango County Habitat for Humanity is preparing for their 2nd annual “Souper Bowl” to be held at the Family YMCA on North Broad Street in Norwich tomorrow.  Officials are looking for donations of soup and bread from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. tomorrow, plus the public is invited to taste and evaluate more than 20 soup choices, and breads donated by the county’s restaurants. The Boys & Girls Club of Sidney will be hosting its 6th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Bowl-a-thon at 6:00 PM Saturday at 20th Century Lanes in Sidney.   The Bowl-a-thon is 1 of the Boys & Girls Club biggest fundraisers.  The Club has 450-area youth regular attending, they hope to raise more than $5,000 to continue to fund their programs.

The Otsego county sheriffs department arrested 20-year-old Tiffany Marshall, of Davenport on drug charges.  Marshal was charged following an investigation into the sale of narcotics in Oneonta, she is accused of selling oxycodone powder on two separate occasions in 2011.  Marshall had already been indicted on charges of selling oxycodone, she was arraigned in Oneonta city court and was remanded to the Otsego county jail on $500 bail on the latest charges.

An Otsego county jury convicted 36-year-old Dante Major of Hobart in  October after being arrested  for operating as a major drug trafficker.  Major  was sentenced to 20 years to life and a $100,000 fine for operating as a major drug trafficker, 15 years with five years of post-release supervision and a $100,000 fine on the charge of 1st  degree criminal possession of a controlled substance; and 10 years imprisonment with three years of post-release supervision and a $30,000 fine on each of 2 counts of 3rd degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. All sentences are to run consecutively.

State agriculture commissioner Darrel Aubertine announced that Thomas Ryan of Little Falls would replace Dan O’Hara as director of the great New York State Fair, on February 1st.  Ryan is the current serves in the Thruway Authority, he has also held positions with the U.S. General Services Administration, the Federal Transit Administration, and has served in a variety of positions for the late New York Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan and former Governor Mario Cuomo.  O’Hara was the director of the last 6 state fairs starting in 2007, when he was appointed by then-Governor Eliot Spitzer.

Four of the state’s 700 school districts could lose state aid, if they do not adopt a teacher evaluation plan.   New York City school district was the biggest of the 4 that has not submitted the plan, which was enacted last year as a way to keep the best teachers teaching, and weed out the ineffective ones.   The new law stipulates that  20% of the ratings must be based on students’ growth on state tests, another 20% must be based on local measures and the remaining 60 percent must include classroom observations.
