Former Colonial Restaurant owners Yaron Kweller and Jordan Rindgen were aquitted in Broome County Court Tuesday of sexually assaulting a 21-year-old woman in Binghamton in November 2021. The Broome County Jury took about 2 hours to clear the 2 of all charges.

21 year old Patrick Dai of Pittsford, and Cornell University, was arrested Tuesday on a federal criminal complaint charging him with posting threats to kill or injure another using interstate communications. Dai is accused of posting messages to the Cornell section of an online discussion site, where he allegedly called for the deaths of Jewish people and a post threatening to shoot up 104 west, which is a Cornell University kosher dining hall located next to the Cornell Jewish Center. The charge filed against Dai carries a maximum term of 5 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years. Dai is being held at the Broome County Correctional Facility pending court action in a federal court in Syracuse.

The State Dec announced that Amphenol Aerospace recently paid a civil penalty of $945,000 for violations related to the tampering of weekly sampling reports and submission of false materials to DEC over a two-year period. The DEC began investigating Amphenol Aerospace in April 2022 after being notified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency of a complaint that the facility had modified sampling practices by removing nitric acid from wastewater, drumming it into 55-gallon drums, and returning it back into the wastewater treatment system after weekly samples of effluent from the outfall had been collected. EnCon Police and DEC Division of Water employees inspected the facility, Amphenol has instituted procedures to avoid potential recurrences.

New York employers are expected to save more than $50 million dollars in 2024 due to a reduction in the annual workers’ compensation assessment rate, which was set today and goes into effect on January 1, 2024. The projected savings will reduce the current assessment costs for all New York State employers, including more than 400,000 small businesses across the state.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office released the name of the victim killed in a fatal motor vehicle accident on Monday. 17 year old Makai Wilkinson of Harpursville was driving a pickup truck with 2 passengers on Welton Street in the Town of Colesville when the vehicle left the roadway and collided with a tree. The two passengers were transported Wilson Hospital, one for minor injuries and the other for serious injuries, but Wilkinson was pronounced dead at the scene. This is an ongoing investigation.

30 year old Terrence Mewborn pleaded guilty to 1 count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, in Delaware County Court. On July 2, 2022, Deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident with a rollover in the Town of Franklin, several of the passengers were injured and required hospitalization. Deputies found narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and a semi-automatic handgun, Mewborn was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, along with several other criminal charges, he entered a plea of guilty, he admitted the handgun was his, and that he did not have a pistol permit, it is anticipated that Mewborn will be sentenced to 2 to 4 years in state prison.

Attorney General Letitia James today secured an agreement with one of the nation’s largest insulin manufacturers, Novo Nordisk, to cap the price of insulin at $35 per monthly prescription for uninsured New Yorkers for five years. The agreement also requires Novo Nordisk to implement a program with pharmacies to let uninsured patients know before they pay that they are eligible for the insulin cap. Today’s agreement follows earlier agreements with two other large insulin makers, Eli Lilly and Sanofi, to cap insulin prices at $35 a month for uninsured New Yorkers.

NYSEG officials reported that many customers were still without power this afternoon around the tri-county region, following last night’s powerful thunderstorms. NYSEG Reported about 1200 without power in Broome county, about 600 in Otsego County, 120 in Chenango County & about 25 in Delaware County, as crews continue to restore power in areas that had downed trees & power lines.

After hundreds of calls to the Oneonta Police Department to respond to various Issues at the Town House Inn on Main Street in Oneonta, City officials have decided to try to shut the motel down, Oneonta Mayor Mark Drnek told WCDO news what they are doing:

In recent weeks, Oneonta Police have responded to a shots fired complaint, there was also a fatal overdose there recently, among the 400 incidents reported at the Town House Inn. Mayor Drnek said that the Oneonta Police Department, like many others, is short staffed and can’t spend many hours a week responding to the same location repeatedly.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded on August 13th, to a report of vandalism in the Town of Kortright. It was reported that someone had driven a bulldozer on West Kortright Church Road causing extensive damage to the roadway, on September 4th, Deputies arrested Robert Sargent for Criminal Mischief, he was released on an appearance ticket, for the Town of Kortright Court at a later date.

Delaware County District Attorney’s office announced that 32 year old Nicholas Durbin formerly of Deposit, appeared for arraignment on a 4-count indictment in Delaware County Court. Durbin is charged with Sexual Abuse & Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child, for allegedly sexually abusing a 4-year-old child on 4 separate occasions, he pleaded not guilty to the charges, and he was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $50,000.00 cash bail.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 32-year-old John Durgala of Syracuse and 26 year old Prince Johnson of Binghamton. Deputies were dispatched Wednesday to Marvin Hollow Road and State Highway 10 in the Town of Walton for a suspicious vehicle complaint. Prince Johnson was the operator of the vehicle was found to have an active Violent Felony Warrant out of Broome County and he was arrested. John Durgala provided a false identity to Deputies, he was found to have an active Violent Felony Warrant out of Broome County Sheriff’s Office in relation to Johnson’s arrest warrant. Durgala was charged with false impersonation, Obstructing Governmental Administration, he was issued appearance tickets and was directed to appear in the Town of Walton Court at a later date to answer to the charges.

An anonymous tip from the community led to multiple drug smuggling charges at the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility this week. Investigators received information from anonymous community member that an 37 year old Luis Bigio of Endicott allegedly smuggling contraband into the Correctional Facility. Investigators searched Bigio’s cell & recovered 136 suboxone strips, Bigio was charged with 2 Counts of Promoting Prison Contraband, he was serving a Broome County Court sentence related to disobeying a court mandate. Bigio was processed at the Broome County Correctional Facility and will answer for his charges at the Town of Dickinson Court on a future date.

Binghamton Police arrested 28 year old Christopher Frederick for 2nd degree attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree criminal use of a firearm, in connection with a shooting that occurred on Binghamton’s North Side on February 25th, following the report of several shots being fired, and where a 22 year old man was injured with a gunshot wound to the chest. Frederick was arrested without incident in Endwell, he was arraigned in Binghamton City Court and sent to Broome County Jail.

The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced that 50 year old Brett Conklin of Walton was convicted for DWI In Tompkins Town Court. Conklin was arrested last November after a 1 vehicle crash, where registered a BAC of .14. Conklin was ordered to pay $900 in fees and fines, he was sentenced to a 1 year conditional discharge, he must install an ignition interlock device on any vehicle he owns & he must attend a victims impact panel & an impaired Drivers program.

3 individuals are facing 16 felony charges after being apprehended by Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies following the theft of a vehicle and trailer in the Town of Binghamton. On Tuesday, Deputies responded to the reported theft of a truck & trailer containing a zero turn lawn mower on Mill Street in the Town of Binghamton, the truck’s owner had security cameras, & a tracking device, where the vehicle was located at Phillips Way in the Town of Binghamton, the 3 suspects, fled on foot into a creek. Deputies arrested 30 year old Heather Brewer of Endicott, 38 year old Joseph Schultz & 35 year old Ryan White of Endicott on a variety of charges including Grand Larceny, Criminal Possession of stolen Property, & Conspiracy, Schultze was found to have outstanding warrants for Grand Larceny, resisting arrest, identity theft and drug charges in the State of Pennsylvania and violating parole in Albany.

The Council of the Arts has awarded $90 million since Spring 2022 to a record number of artists and organizations across the state.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office announced that the City of Binghamton Police Department responded to a disturbance call at 21 Munsell Street. Police found Kiana Montanez at the residence and was arrested. Broome County Sheriff’s Office announced last week that they were looking for Montanez on a warrant from January 11th.

The State Department of Health officials are exploring their options following a state Supreme Court judge striking down a mandate requiring health care workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Judge Gerard Neri ruled that the governor and the health department overstepped their authority by mandating a vaccine not included in state public health laws. The judge sided with a group known as “the Medical Professionals for Informed Consent”.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the availability $38.2 million in state funding to establish 8 Safe Options Support teams that will provide services to homeless individuals in area outside of New York City. The teams will be modeled after ones providing assistance to unsheltered individuals in New York City and will be deployed in areas of the state with high rates of street homelessness.

The Broome County District Attorney’s Office announced that Thomas Kurtz of Whitney Point pleaded guilty to felony Attempted Assault. Kurtz admitted that on August 13, 2021, punched a corrections officer in the forehead causing a laceration that required stitches, while Kurtz was an inmate at the jail. Kurtz was convicted in 2019 for Attempted Arson, he will be sentenced to 2 to 4 years on the latest charge on April 3rd.

Attorney General Letitia James today released a statement after the United States Supreme Court ruled to allow New York’s Concealed Carry Improvement Act to remain in effect pending appeal. The Supreme Court upheld a stay that was issued by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in December. The law strengthens requirements for concealed carry permits, prohibits guns in sensitive places, requires individuals with concealed carry permits to request a property owner’s consent to carry on their premises, enhances safe storage requirements, and requires background checks on all ammunition purchases.

An investigation into billing errors at NYSEG is underway by the New York Department of Public Service after electric and gas customers from more than 40 counties complained about spikes in their bills last year. The Consumer Advocate of the Public Service Department will host a series of public forums starting this month as part of the investigation into NYSEG.

Village of Sidney officials announced that starting around 9:00 AM on Monday, January 16th, those water system customers north of the Susquehanna River along Route 8 and the surrounding areas will experience water service distruptions for a period of time. The grant money will be used to fund a Building Condition Assessment of the museum’s property at 77 Silver Street in Norwich. 19 projects in 14 counties across the state shared in $68,000 in grant money.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Thursday to the Town of Hamden for a custody dispute complaint. Deputies discovered that the legal guardian of a child under one year old, had permitted parenting time for the biological father to see the child for a specified period of time at his residence in Sidney. Deputies discovered that 20 year old Tyler Morgan of Sidney allegedly refused to give the child back to the legal guardian when ask to do so. Deputies charged Morgan with Custodial Interference, the child was returned to the legal guardian. Morgan was directed to appear to the Town of Sidney Town Court at a later date to answer for the charge.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 41 year old Steven Salomon of the town of Maryland, he is accused of contacting a business and made false claims that he was a law enforcement officer. State Police are warning residents of a phone scam, where someone will call claiming to represent the State Police and ask for donations. State Police said that they do not seek donations from the public, and is you receive such a call, do not give any personal information, and simply hang up.

State Police arrested 22 year old Brian Christman of Fort Plain, for Vehicular Manslaughter and Driving While Intoxicated. Back on July 23rd, State Police responded to a fatal one-vehicle crash on Shacktown Mountain Road in the town of Pittsfield. The passenger of the vehicle 22 year old Payton Stirone of Mount Vision was pronounced deceased at the scene, Christman was driving at the time of the crash & was transported to Basset Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli released a report that showed that almost 2.7 million New Yorkers, or 13.9% of the state’s population, lived in poverty in 2021, compared to 12.8% of all Americans. The report showed that poverty rates in the state declined prior to the pandemic, they were higher in 2021 than in 2019. New York ranked 13th among all states, with a higher rate of poverty than the neighboring Northeast States.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that since early January, when mobile sports wagering became available in New York, the State has collected $542 million in taxes through the week ending October 30, far surpassing every other state in the nation. Broome County Sheriff’s deputies responded Tuesday to a Town of Fenton residence, where they found 18 year old Gavin Marsh with a stab wound to his upper thigh, following a road rage incident on Upper Front Street. The other driver was identified as 50 year old Michael Seaman, who allegedly followed Marsh to his residence & engaged in a fist sight with Marsh & another teenager, before allegedly stabbing Marsh. Marsh was transported to Wilson Hospital for treatment. The Broome County Sheriff’s Office & the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office located Seaman in South New Berlin, he was taken into custody, he was been charged with Felony Assault and was turned over to Broome County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Staff.

On Sunday, New York State extended the Executive Order to continue to maximize the resources available to protect New Yorkers against polio through vaccination. So far. Only 1 case of polio has been identified, but ongoing wastewater surveillance provides evidence of repeated polio-virus detections in sewage samples throughout the state. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 40 year old Christopher Lacey of Downsville for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, following an investigation into a motor vehicle accident on October 5th on River Road in the Town of Colchester. Deputies reported that the driver left the scene, Walton Police located Lacey, who’s driving privileges were revoked for refusing to submit to a chemical test. A Windsor man has pleaded guilty to Robbery in the 3rd degree. According to the Broome County District Attorney, Scott Frost admitted he stole a motorcycle and threatened to shoot the owner while he was on parole for a burglary in 2014 in Tioga County. Frost will be sentenced in December 2022 and faces two to four years.

The State Department of Health updated New Yorkers on the poliovirus, following the identification of polio in early June wastewater samples in Rockland County, the virus has now also been detected in wastewater samples in Orange County. Delaware County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at D’s Pizzeria in Walton and arrested Damien Falconio on 2 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, 1 count each of Forcible Touching, Unlawful Imprisonment & Persistent Sexual Abuse. Falconio was convicted of 3rd Degree Rape & Sexual Abuse in 2012, he was released from state prison as a Level 3 Sex Offender in August 2016 and just completed his parole supervision in June. Falconio was arraigned and remanded without bail to Delaware County Correctional Facility. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed at a later time.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office, arrested 25 year old Clayton Truax of Roseboom on 2 counts of Assault & Endangering the Welfare of child. Truax is accused of hitting his child with a metal bottle, causing an eye injury, he was remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility on $5,000 cash or $50,000 bond.

Chenango County Sheriff’s Office responded Wednesday to a report of a trespass in progress at a Town of Norwich residence. A male and two females were found and detained at the location, the vehicle driven to the residence was reported stolen from New Hartford in June. Deputies Arrested Aaron Gabriel, Tami Lyn Gray of Norwich and Jennifer Pollock of Norwich, for 2nd degree Burglary, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property and Conspiracy, all are being held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility.

Delaware County Public Health reported 2 more COVID Deaths, for Tuesday & Wednesday, bringing the total to 76 for the pandemic. Delaware County still reports a high positivity rate of almost 10.5%, there were 55 new cases of COVID, 227 active cases, 10 hospitalized & 403 quarantined. 53.2% of County residents are fully vaccinated, 76% of cases are not vaccinated.
