Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested 67 year old Michael Murphy of Rochester for assault after an investigation on April 29th at a residential facility in the Town of Delhi for a complaint of a staff member being assaulted by a patient. Deputies identified the patient as Murphy, who had allegedly struck the staff member. On May 1st, Deputies received a criminal summons for 3rd degree Assault from the Town of Delhi Court, Deputies learned that Murphy was at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown from an unrelated incident, Murphy was subsequently arrested and issued the summons and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Delhi Court at later date.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office seeking the public’s help in identifying a suspect regarding numerous car larcenies that took place at the in the Town of Conklin Saturday Night & early Sunday Morning. The suspect was captured on a home surveillance video and appears to be wearing a stocking over their head. It is believed the suspect is operating a dark colored SUV. Norwich Police Department received a call Saturday about an individual stealing from parked vehicles in the Norwich High School Parking lot, Officers located the suspect, 28 year old Matthew Maricle of Cincinnatus, in a stolen vehicle and a 30-mile vehicle pursuit ensued from Norwich to Mount Upton, where he ran the stolen vehicle into a ditch. Maricle was charged with Reckless Endangerment, Unlawful Fleeing of a police officer, Resisting Arrest & Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. It was learned that Maricle had forcibly stolen the vehicle from an 81-year-old male in the City of Cortland, 3 days of being released from prison, Maricle will be held pending arraignment at Norwich City Court.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 39 Year Old Michael Shaheen of Chenango after he posted photos and video of himself wielding a handgun. Deputies responded Saturday to a Suspicious Incident complaint involving the photos and video sent by Shaheen, the individual receiving them requested an Extreme Risk Protection Order from the Town of Chenango Court, which was granted. Shaheen was found to be in possession of A semi-automatic handgun, ammunition, as well as Methamphetamine, Adderall, Xanax, Cocaine, MDMA, a digital scale and packing materials, at his residence. 2 children were also living at the residence. Shaheen was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, 2 Counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, 6 Counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance & 2 counts of Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia, he was arraigned and is being held at the Broome County Correctional Facility.

The State Department of Labor today released preliminary local unemployment rates for February 2024. The State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased .1% to 4.4% in February 2024, locally Chenango County had 4.5% unemployment, Delaware County had 5.2%, & Otsego County had 5.1 % in February.

Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 24 year old Cotty Hubbard of Oneonta for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell & Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with an aggregate weight, following an investigation in to reported drug activity in the Town of Oneonta. In November of 2022, Otsego County Deputies and the State Police were dispatched to a location in the Town of Oneonta for suspicious activity, Hubbard was arrested & was released on an appearance ticket, he was accused of possessing a heroin and fentanyl mixture as well as 6 grams of cocaine, plus hypodermic needles, smoking devices and digital scales. Last August, a sealed indictment was granted by an Otsego County Grand Jury, Hubbard was located Monday and he was arraigned in Otsego County Court and released on his own recognizance.

28 year old Latasha Mott of Syracuse was arraigned on charges of manslaughter and disposal of a corpse in the death of her daughter, Nefertiti Harris. Mott is accused of fatally hitting the child with a belt multiple times on January 6, and hiding the body in a wooded area, Syracuse police were searching in fields and woods on Monday, Mott pleaded not guilty on Monday, she was being held on $500,000 cash or a $1 million bond.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli’s Office audited the Village of Sidney, covering the period of June 2020 to June 2022. The Audit said that the Board and Clerk-Treasurer did not properly monitor selected financial activities, so the total general fund balance for fiscal year-end 2021-22 was overstated by $571,719. For the past 5 years, the total airport operating deficits exceeded $293,000, Delinquent taxes totaling $575,182 date back to fiscal year 2011-12 and officials cannot identify which taxpayers owe $60,452 of that total. General fund assets were overstated by $288,510 and liabilities by $434,929 in fiscal year 2021-22. 2 capital project funds and 3 community development funds have negative fund balances. The Audit’s Recommendations were to determine whether revenues are adequate to cover expenditures, Collect delinquent real property taxes & Maintain proper accounting records, Village officials generally agreed and indicated corrective actions would be taken.

The State Police will increase patrols to combat drunk, impaired, and reckless driving throughout this Memorial Day weekend. The special enforcement period starts today and runs through Tuesday. Drivers can expect to see sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols by State Police and local law enforcement agencies during this holiday weekend. On Memorial Day weekend in 2022, Troopers arrested 213 people for driving while impaired, issued 13,688 total tickets, and investigated 808 crashes, which resulted in four fatalities.

Broome County District Attorney Mike Korchak announced that 50 year old Michael Seaman was sentenced to 4 years in New York State prison followed by 5 years post-release supervision after pleading guilty to felony Attempted Assault. Seaman admitted that on October 18, 2022, in the Town of Fenton, he attempted to cause serious injury to an 18-year-old male by stabbing him in the leg with a knife during a road rage altercation. The victim was hospitalized and required surgery. Seaman was located in Chenango County later that day.

Police in Virginia reported that 34 year old Tatiana David of Ithaca, who was abducted from Ithaca yesterday morning, has died following a shootout with Police on I-95 in Springfield Virginia. Virginia State Police said that a trooper spotted the Jeep Cherokee that was the suspected kidnapper’s vehicle Wednesday Night, Police pulled the Jeep over & the trooper made contact with the driver and returned to his patrol car, the Jeep sped off and police pursued for about 20 miles, state police positioned vehicles around the Jeep to force it to stop. Virginia State Police said that the driver 35 year old Michael Davis began firing shots as troopers approached the Jeep, Troopers returned fire, Davis was shot and suffered life-threatening injuries, Tatiana David was shot and killed during the incident.

Delaware County District Attorney’s office announced that 33 year old Andelis Santiago of Hartford Connecticut, was convicted on 1 count of Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs and Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle in the Town of Hancock Court. Santiago was alleged to have been speeding on State Route 17 in the Town of Hancock, State Police initiated a traffic stop, & he failed to stop his vehicle for approximately 8 miles, until he drove off the road. Santiago was fined $1,400, plus a $50 DNA fee for submitting a sample for the State DNA databank, he was also ordered to attend a Victim’s Impact Panel and successfully complete an Impaired Driver Program & he must undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation, he could face a year in jail if he fails to comply.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic dispute Monday, 30 year old Stephen Pudiak of Port Crane is accused of placing a gun at his girlfriend & also allegedly choking the women, in front of her 3-year-old daughter, she snuck away from their residence to file charges with the Broome County Sheriff’s Office when Pudiak fell asleep. Deputies made contact with Pudiak and took him into custody without issue, they seized weapons that he was not allowed to possess, he was taken to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Central Arraignment and charged with 5 counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Unlawful Possession of a Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing & menacing.

26 Year old Brandin VanTassel of Walton, was sentenced Monday in Delaware County Court for Criminal Contempt. VanTassel previously pleaded guilty to Criminal Contempt in February, with a 6 month sentence & 5 years’ probation supervision, he contacted the protected party again in violation of the order of protection, Delaware County Court Judge Gary Rosa ruled that as a result of the new conduct, the Court was not bound by the original plea agreement, VanTassel was re-sentenced to 1 and 1/3 to 4 years in state prison.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced over $70 million in financial assistance for water infrastructure improvement projects across New York State. The Village of Sidney received $565,312 short-term interest free financing and $887,469 in grants for the planning, design, and construction of wastewater treatment facility upgrades.

A.O. Fox Hospital and Bassett Healthcare Network announced that FoxCare Fitness in Oneonta will be closing permanently as of June 1 for Gym memberships, Spokesperson Gabby Argo told WCDO News that the pandemic made things harder for the facility to remain open as a Gym:

Walton Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire Monday at 34 Mead Street in the Village of Walton. A Walton Assistant Chief who was passing by and notified 911, of smoke showing & a woman on the 2nd floor attempting to escape, the assistant chief was able to assist her in exiting the home. Mutual aid was promptly dispatched from Trout Creek and Delhi Fire Departments & the FAST team from Franklin. 1 firefighters was injured inside & was safely removed, he was transported to DVH where he was further evaluated, treated and later released. The fire was under control in about 90 minutes, The 2nd and 3rd floors were deemed a total loss. The first floor suffered extensive heat, smoke and water damage

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a disabled vehicle on State Highway 28 in the Town of Franklin, 23 year old Devon Finch of Andes, had been operating a motor vehicle in an intoxicated state, Deputies arrested and charged Finch with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Finch was released on an appearance ticket and directed to appear at the Town of Franklin Town Court at a later date.

The City of Oneonta announced that a safety concern on the exit ramp in the City’s Parking Garage located on Market Street, The ramp was immediately closed Monday and a structural engineer brought in , who advised that repairs to the ramp are required before it can be safely re-opened to vehicular traffic. The top level of the parking garage and the exit ramp will remain closed until those repairs can be made. Also, City officials announced that their contractor, R.B. Robinson Contracting, will begin construction for Gardner Place Street Reconstruction project on Wednesday, This project will continue thru the end of June 2023. Work includes replacement of sanitary and storm sewer mains, including new sewer laterals to residents and businesses, and full street reconstruction including some sidewalks and curbs followed by final restoration and stripping.

Former Assistant to Former Broome County District Attorney James Worhach was sentenced to 2 to 4 years in prison. Worhach served under previous DA Steven Cornwell, In January, Worhach pleaded guilty to Grand Larceny after admitting he stole more than $1,000 from 2016-2019 from the Broome County government. Worhach was also ordered to pay $5,727.75 in restitution to Broome County plus a fine of $1,000.

A State DEC Environmental Conservation Police Officer is credited with saving an elderly couple from their burning car in Downsville on March 7th. En Con Officer Doig noticed flames shooting out near the exhaust and gas tank of the vehicle, he notified Delaware County 911, approached the vehicle & safely removed 2 elderly individuals from the car. Officer Doig grabbed his patrol car fire extinguisher, and put out the fire. The Downsville Fire Department arrived a short time later and determined the vehicle had a leaking gas tank and could have become engulfed in flames at any moment. The couple were unaware the car caught fire, there were no injuries reported.

Broome County Sheriff’s Office welcomed 27 new Corrections Officers at a ceremony at SUNY Broome Community College, including 7 women. The 27 officers was the largest group of new Corrections Officers in the history of the Sheriff’s Office, freshman Sheriff Fred Akshar stated that it was a priority to bolster the number of Corrections officers as soon as possible, when he took office in January.

Bassett Healthcare Network announced today that masks are no longer required for patients, visitors, or staff members across most areas of the health system. 1 exception is in Bassett’s skilled nursing facilities at A.O. Fox Nursing Home, Valley Residential Services, and Valley Health Services, where masks will still be required for all employees and visitors. Long-term care facilities continue to follow stricter guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) based on community transmission rates to protect residents.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office arrested 48 year old Charles Bodie of Edmeston for 2nd degree Rape, Criminal Sex Act, Dissemination of Indecent Material to Minors, Obscenity, & Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Bodie is accused of engaging in sexual relationship with a minor for several months, allegedly sent indecent material to the minor while he was employed outside of the State, and then Homeland Security was requested to assist. Bodie was located and arrested & he was returned to New York, he was turned over to investigators and was being held at the Otsego County Correctional Facility to await arraignment. Additional charges are expected.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 71 year old Vincent Balsamo of Walton on an Indictment Warrant for Manslaughter. The arrest was a result of a 3-month investigation, Balsamo was charged with 2nd degree Manslaughter, 2nd degree assault and reckless endangerment for a domestic incident that resulted in the death of 52 year old April Kestner of Honesdale Pennsylvania at his residence in the Town of Walton in December 2022. Balsamo was being held pending future court action.

Charlotte Bennett has filed a complaint in State Court claiming that the State is liable for Cuomo’s alleged sexual harrassment of her & against the actions of Cuomo’s top aides for failing to take corrective action after she reported the abuse. Bennett had previously filed a lawsuit against Cuomo, who has denied the allegations.

The Oxford Girls Basketball team finished the 2022-23 season with an appearance in the Class-D state championship game on Sunday in Troy. The Blackhawks fell to Hammond from Section 10 in the title game but earned an exciting semifinal victory on Saturday over Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons from Section 2. Madalyn Barrows was the star of the weekend for Oxford as she tallied 43 points, 19 rebounds, 12 steals & 10 assists over the two games. Oneonta Police Department responded On the morning of Saturday, January 14th, at 8:58 a.m., for a report of a person down in Neahwa Park. Officers responded with members of the Oneonta Fire Department and located a 35-year-old male who was unresponsive and later declared deceased by Otsego County Coroner Terry Knapp. The male was identified, and his family notified of his passing. A death investigation was completed by the Oneonta Police Detective division and revealed no indication of foul play. Oneonta Police are not releasing the name of the deceased.

The Norwich City School District reported that on Early Friday morning, cafeteria staff in the Gibson school were following protocol, washing bananas to serve our students, employees discovered a scorpion in the bananas. It was quickly contained. Cafeteria and custodial staff followed all protocols and no staff or students were harmed in the discovery. In addition, High School Zoology students were able to capitalize on the discovery and feed it crickets and study it under a glow light. Norwich school Officials believe that the scorpion traveled to Norwich from Guatemala, in the banana box.

State Police arrested 24 year old Patrick Combs of Roxbury for Grand Larceny, Criminal Possession of Cannabis and Operating a Motor Vehicle while Under the Influence of Drugs. State Police were called to State Highway 30 in the town of Roxbury Sunday for a report of a larceny by a store employee. A preliminary investigation determined that Combs stole $2000 from a safe and then left the store in his vehicle. Troopers located Combs and when approaching his vehicle could smell an odor of cannabis. While conducting an inventory of the vehicle, Troopers located a large amount of cannabis, a weight scale, drug paraphernalia and alcohol. The investigation is ongoing.

The State Department of Health announced that the XBB.1.5. variant is now the most dominant strain in New York, accounting for more than 50 percent of COVID-19 infections statewide, the strain is more transmissible than other circulating variants, though there is not yet clear evidence of significant changes to virulence or severity of disease. Currently over 3400 New Yorkers are hospitalized with COVID. The Health Department’s weekly flu surveillance report for the week ending January 7, shows influenza remaining widespread throughout the state for a fourteenth consecutive week, with a total of 293,541 positive cases across all 62 counties reported to date. Confirmed cases statewide dropped 36 percent, while overall hospitalizations were down 34 percent from the previous week with 1621 hospitalized.

The State DOT reported that a tractor trailer jack-knifed on I-88 at about 11:30 this morning in the westbound between Exit 12 Otego and Exit 11. both lanes were blocked & traffic was detoured to state Route 7. State Police will step up speed enforcement efforts along the New York portion of U.S. Highway 20 today, as part of a 1 day project, targeted at reducing speed related crashes on non-interstate highways. The program was created by the Iowa State Patrol, U.S. Highway 20 spans 3,365 miles coast to coast. New York State has jurisdiction over 372 miles of the highway, other participating states include Iowa, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

State Police located 58-year-old Jan Dager of Salisbury in Herkimer County, deceased in a wooded area about half a mile from his home. Dager was reported missing from his home January 14th, The investigation is on-going.

Village of Sidney announced that the water service disruption will be starting around 9:00 AM Tuesday, water system customers north of the Susquehanna River along Route 8 and the surrounding areas will experience water service disruptions, until about 4:00 PM. The Sidney Police Department in 2022 handled a total of 3,050 calls for service. 1,791 were criminal in nature, while 1,259 were non-criminal in nature. Sidney Police responded to 85 were false business alarms, 100 were animal complaints, 196 were EMS or Fire related, there were 61 were mental health incidents. Sidney Police had 445 arrests consisting of 181 Violations, 204 Misdemeanors, 60 Felonies, 319 Traffic tickets were issued there were 389 Warnings, Sidney Police responded to 95 Motor vehicle accidents & 92 Parking tickets were issued.

Attorney General Letitia James today released a statement after the United States Supreme Court ruled to allow New York’s Concealed Carry Improvement Act to remain in effect pending appeal. The Supreme Court upheld a stay that was issued by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in December. The law strengthens requirements for concealed carry permits, prohibits guns in sensitive places, requires individuals with concealed carry permits to request a property owner’s consent to carry on their premises, enhances safe storage requirements, and requires background checks on all ammunition purchases.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Thursday to the Town of Hamden for a custody dispute complaint. Deputies discovered that the legal guardian of a child under one year old, had permitted parenting time for the biological father to see the child for a specified period of time at his residence in Sidney. Deputies discovered that 20 year old Tyler Morgan of Sidney allegedly refused to give the child back to the legal guardian when ask to do so. Deputies charged Morgan with Custodial Interference, the child was returned to the legal guardian. Morgan was directed to appear to the Town of Sidney Town Court at a later date to answer for the charge.

State Police responded to State Route 23 in the town of Davenport at about 4:00 this morning, for a report of a tractor trailer vs. passenger vehicle collision. As a result of the head on collision, a 43-year-old female passenger of the van was pronounced deceased at the scene. The operator of the passenger vehicle was transported by helicopter to a hospital with leg and pelvis injuries. The operator of the tractor trailer suffered minor injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

The State University of New York needs to make sure its campuses are upholding in-state residency requirements so that only eligible students receive the benefit of a lower tuition, according to an audit by Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The audit found that many campuses had little or no verification of residency for SUNY graduate students, resulting in tuition undercharging. Auditors randomly sampled 1,207 graduate student application assessments from the 7 campuses, the problem was confined to 4 schools, including SUNY Binghamton, The sample translates to a potential $1.3 million in tuition undercharges. Deposit Officials announced that a drainage improvement project is underway, resulting in detouring through traffic on 2nd Street between Church and Dean Streets for over a month. Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a 1 car property damage accident on Harvard Road in the Town of Hancock, Deputies arrested 58 year-old Diane Marcellino of Florida, with driving while intoxicated, aggravated unlicensed operation, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, plus several other charges, Marcellino was issued traffic summonses and was released pending her appearance in the Town of Hancock Court on a later date.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 40 year old Gloria Prott of Southhaven on charges of unlawful possession of marijuana, criminal possession of a controlled substance, driving while ability impaired by drugs, speeding at 80 miles an hour in a 55 zone and operating a motor vehicle with an open container of an alcoholic beverage, following a traffic stop on State Highway 17 in the Town of Hancock. 49-year-old Edward Prott of Southhaven was a passenger in the vehicle; he was also arrested for criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana. Cocaine and Marijuana were seized from the vehicle; both were arraigned in Hancock Village Court and were remanded to the Delaware County Jail on cash bail pending future court action.

More than 9.1 million New Yorkers were working in 2016, according to a report released by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. The report showed that regional growth remained uneven, with downstate regions experiencing the highest employment growth while most upstate regions saw declines. Chenango County Sheriff Deputies & Norwich City Police arrested 56-year-old James Brown following an investigation into the illegal growing of cannabis. State Police arrested 62-year-old Gary Perine of Sanford for 3rd degree Arson. On August 25, troopers and local fire departments responded to an unoccupied house fire at 28 Kenyon Hill road in the town of Sanford, troopers accuse Perine had purposely started the fire inside his home. Perine was arraigned in the town of Sanford court and was remanded to the Broome county jail with no bail set. His next court date is pending.

Governor Cuomo today announced that $60.7 million in grants, in addition to interest-free and low-cost loans, have been approved by the State Environmental Facilities Corporation Board to support drinking water and wastewater projects across the state. The Town of Roxbury will get a $1 million low-interest loan for source, pumping, distribution, storage and treatment improvements, which includes new and upgraded controls, electrical systems, backup power and chemical feed systems; replacement of old valves, hydrants, undersized water mains and a new storage tank mixing system and rehabilitation of the storage tank.

Norwich Police have arrested 2 people following an investigation of heroin sales. On Thursday, Norwich police arrested 34 year old Bryan Petry of Norwich for Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance and Criminal Nuisance, and 34 year old Tiffany Walsh of Norwich for Criminal Nuisance. Both were arraigned in Norwich City Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail, Petry’s bail is set at $10,000. Walsh’s bail is set at $5,000. They are scheduled to reappear in the Norwich City Court shortly.

Chenango County Sherriff’s Department arrested 35 year old Misty Mojica of New Berlin for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, after a traffic stop on State Route 12 in the Town of Norwich. Mojica is accused of possessing a controlled substance & items related to manufacturing methamphetamine were located within the vehicle. The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are expected. Mojica faces action in Town of Norwich court at a later date.

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office arrested 17 year old Jason Terkowski of Harpursville and 17 year old Kyle Grose of Harpursville for 2nd degree Burglary. Both are accused of unlawfully entering a residence in the Town of Colesville last month and stealing property, which has been recovered. Terkowski and Grose were arraigned in the Town of Colesville Court and released on their own recognizance to appear in court on a later date.

The Chenango county sheriffs department arrested 21-year-old Trista Welch of Oxford, for 2nd degree assault and 4th degree criminal mischief.  Welch is accused of striking another person with a shovel Sunday, she was arraigned in the Town of Oxford court and released on her own recognizance, and will reappear in the Town of Oxford Court at a later date.

The Chenango county sheriffs department arrested 25-year-old Joshua Harrington of Norwich on an active Arrest Warrant for Failure to appear in court on a previous arrest fro a drug charge, and Resisting Arrest.  Harrington was located by a sheriff’s deputy while walking in the City of Norwich; he fled on foot and entered a residence in the City of Norwich to avoid being taken into custody.  Harrington was located and taken into custody without incident; he was arraigned in the Town of North Norwich Court and remanded to the custody of the Sheriff on $1,000 Cash Bail to reappear in that court at a later date.

The latest poll by the Siena Research Institute says 44 %% of voters surveyed opposed the Department of Environmental Conservation lifting a 4 ½-year-old ban on gas drilling using hydraulic fracturing, while 40% favored lifting the ban. The poll showed that Upstate voters opposed fracking 51% to 38%.  The previous surveys showed the opposite results, the most recent poll was conducted by phone of 676 registered voters and has a margin of error just under 4%.

State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli released the state December cash report, which showed that Tax collections through December totaling $46.4 billion were $48.3 million below the state’s latest estimates and $685.3 million below initial estimates in April.   DiNapoli said that to meet current year-end projections, tax collections will have to grow 7.1% until April 1st, however the economic effects from Hurricane Sandy & the delayed federal aid is likely make the projections out of reach, new projections are expected from the governor tomorrow when he releases the Executive Budget to the legislature.

The Broome county sheriff’s department arrested 24-year-old Crystal Ellett for DWI, driving with a BAC of .08 percent or higher, leaving the scene of a personal injury motor vehicle accident, speed not reasonable and prudent, moving from lane unsafely and operating a motor vehicle without proof of insurance.  Ellett is accused of crashing her car & leaving the scene, on state Route 369 in the town of Fenton, 1 passenger was injured in the crash & was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.  Ellett was released and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Fenton court at a later date.

A group of firearm owners gathered at the state Capitol in Albany Saturday to protest the governor’s new gun control laws.  Saturday’s protest is expected to be the first in a series of rallies by gun owners across the state, in the state capital.

Governor Cuomo and state lawmakers agreed to changes to gun laws that would expand the state’s ban on assault weapons.  The bill would broaden the definition of assault weapons; ban semiautomatic pistols and rifles with detachable magazines and one military-style feature, as well as semiautomatic shotguns with one military-style feature.  The bill would require mental health professionals to report to local mental health officials when they believe that patients are likely to harm themselves or others, Law enforcement would then be authorized to confiscate any firearm owned by that patient; the bill stipulates that those who already own such guns could keep them.  The legislation would increase penalties for multiple crimes committed with guns, would require background checks for most private gun sales, and create a statewide gun-registration database.

Hospice of Chenango County is looking for area people to volunteer this year.  Kendall Drexler is the Volunteer Coordinator at Hospice, she told WCDO what a potential volunteer would do to become a volunteer:

Drexler said that a Hospice Volunteer candidate is required to take a 23-hour training, which encompasses topics surrounding the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual aspects of death and dying. State troopers from Norwich arrested 23-year-old Joshua Orth of Morrisville, on a charge of 3rd degree Assault.  The arrest followed the report of an altercation in Lincklaen, Orth was arraigned in the Town of Pitcher Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $500 cash bail pending further court action.

The Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force announced the arrest of 25-year-old Diondre Smith of Binghamton.  Police found three grams of crack cocaine, 10 grams of powder cocaine, three loaded hand guns and extra ammunition and over $5300 in cash during a traffic stop Monday in Binghamton, smith was arraigned in the City of Binghamton and sent to the Broome County Jail, police also charged 22 year old Tyrek McCarden on drug charges, he was a passenger in the Smith vehicle, and 14 small bags of marijuana were confiscated, he was released on an appearance ticket.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Department arrested 24-year-old Ashley Babcock of Norwich, For Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Criminally Possessing a Hypodermic Instrument.  Babcock Was charged following a traffic stop, where she was initially accused of operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s license, She was found to be in possession of a Controlled Substance along with a Hypodermic Instrument. She is scheduled to appear in the City of Norwich Court at a later date.
